Genuine Humbleness
Posted on www.shaykh.org (5th Jan 2011)

"Pride and arrogance come in many forms. One manifestation of pride, which is not easily recognisable, takes the outward form of humility: some people feel the need to outwardly display humility while within they actually think highly of themselves for doing so.

People who are genuinely humble don't have a high opinion of themselves, but truly believe themselves insignificant and humble. An analogy will help us understand what true humbleness is.

Imagine a sleeping person: while fast asleep he does not know that he is asleep; it is only after waking up that he realises that he had been asleep. Likewise, a person who is humble does not feel that he is being humble; his behaviour is naturally full of humbleness without him knowing it."

Jazakallah, this is a very tricky topic. I pray to Allah that he keeps us all away from this filthy disease.

This one really scares me. PRIDE & ARROGANCE

Honour and Disgrace
Posted on www.shaykh .org (September 6, 2007)

May Allah ta'ala raise us all through humility and safeguard us all from disgrace:

"When a person humbles himself for the sake of Allah ta'ala, then it is Allah ta'ala who elevates him. Allah will provide all the means required to elevate the status of such an individual and thus will grant him piety, knowledge, wealth and protection from disgrace.

When a person lets pride overtake him, Allah ta'ala decides to disgraces such an individual. Such people are disgraced even though they may possess all the means by which a person's status is elevated.

The disgrace and honour that one experiences will be in proportion to one's pride and humility. For example, the Mi'raaj was the means of the highest stage of honour for the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam as his humility was of the highest degree."

The Garments of Allah
Posted on www.sahykh.org (February 11, 2008)

In a Hadeeth e Qudsi it is mentioned that Allah ta'ala says:

Pride is my upper garment and greatness is my lower garment. Whoever fights with Me in regards to these two then I will put him into the fire.

By comparing pride and greatness to an upper and lower garment, Allah ta'ala is indicating towards a very important reality.

Just like a person's upper and lower garment are very important to him and in no condition will he be ready to separate from them, Allah ta'ala is not prepared at all to let go of his pride and greatness.

Moreover whoever tries to disrobe and rob a person of his garments, deserves to be severely punished. Likewise whoever tries to snatch Allah ta'ala's garments of pride and greatness will be severely chastised.

Hence it is more appropriate for one to leave these garments for Allah ta'ala and adorn himself with the attire of humility.

On the subject of pride:

The Arrogance and Pride of the Ghair-Muqqalideen

Many great scholars of the past made taqleed of one of the four schools. Giants in Islamic scholarship such as Imams Ibn Hajar, Dhahabi, Tahawi, Razi, Jassas, Nawawi, (rahmatullahi alaihim), and the list goes on endlessly, all adhering to one of the four schools.

Clearly, this is also a great testimony of the true humility and fear of Allah Ta'ala these tremendous men possessed, that despite their own towering statuses as Hadeeth scholars and jurists, they were ready to admit that others had greater knowledge than themselves and thus they followed them.

Just as this speaks volumes about them and their real humility, it also reveals an alarming danger for a sincere Muslim concerning his own condition.
Namely, if it was a mark of humility that compelled them to choose one of the Imams to follow, then surely rejecting taqleed of the imams may possibly indicate the pride lurking within a person. For despite being hindered by a myriad of deficiencies, such as not being able to understand Arabic and having little or no appreciation of the Islamic sciences, what could possibly lead a person to believe that he was above practising taqleed?

Pride is a disease that for the earnest believer cannot be tolerated at any expense, for the Messenger of Allah (salallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "A person with the extent of a grain of pride in his heart will not enter Paradise." [Sahih Muslim]
