M&M's in America use artificial colouring. I'd investigated upon hearing from brother Daywlak3r since the ingredients were totally different.

MILK CHOCOLATE (SUGAR, CHOCOLATE, COCOA BUTTER, SKIM MILK, LACTOSE, MILKFAT, PEANUTS, SOY LECITHIN, SALT, ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS), SUGAR, PEANUTS, CORNSTARCH, LESS THAN 1% - CORN SYRUP, GUM ACACIA, COLORING (INCLUDES BLUE 1 LAKE, RED 40, YELLOW 6, YELLOW 5, BLUE 1, RED 40 LAKE, BLUE 2 LAKE, YELLOW 6 LAKE, YELLOW 5 LAKE, BLUE 2), DEXTRIN. CONTAINS PEANUTS, MILK AND SOY. MAY CONTAIN ALMONDS.

Cool because I think if someone buys a pack and throws away red ones there is some leeway in the matter. I don't eat or like them and don't really care much about food anyways...

Allah (SWT) knows best.

Suitable for Vegetarians is not the same as Suitable for Vegans, so please keep that in mind as its not applicable to us.

Here is a response from M&M's last year via email.

Quote:
Case ID 40336412 - Hi from Greg at M&M's

Dear Abu Mohammed,
Thank you for getting in touch. Unfortunately none of our chocolate products are suitable for people who follow a vegan diet.
Kind regards,

In the US, they use the colour RED 40 derived from either coal or petroleum byproducts

In the UK, they use E120

Majority of RED sweets (including gum) use the above as colour, so you must check the ingredients before buying it. Any food that has a hint of red, orange, pink etc are most likely Haram as they contain E120. If the ingredient doesn't state E120, it'll probably say Carmine (pronounced /ˈkɑrmɪn/ or /ˈkɑrmaɪn/), also called Crimson Lake, Cochineal, Natural Red #40, C.I. 75470, or E120, is a pigment of a bright red color obtained from the carminic acid produced by some scale insects, such as the cochineal and the Polish cochineal, and is used as a general term for a particularly deep red color of the same name. Carmine is used in the manufacture of artificial flowers, paints, crimson ink, rouge, and other cosmetics, and is routinely added to food products such as yogurt and certain brands of juice, most notably those of the ruby-red variety.

Red#40-Red AC was originally manufactured from coal tar but is now mostly made from petroleum. Despite the popular misconception, Allura Red AC is not derived from any insect, unlike the food coloring carmine which is derived from the female cochineal insect.

American Version, more details into the colouring.

The Chemistry of Red 40

Red Dye #40 (and all FDA certified dyes) is referred to as a "Coal Tar" dye. The phrase has little meaning today but a hundred years ago it was used to describe synthetic chemicals that started out with coal tar as a precursor. It's more likely today to find a petrochemical as the original base of most synthetic chemicals, though they're so highly refined that you won't find any residual petroleum in the product.

The proper chemical name for Red40 is:
6-hydroxy-5-[(2-methoxy-5-methyl-4-sulfophenyl)azo]-2-naphthalenesulfonic acid
which is a terribly long word for a very tiny molecule. The chemical is often referred to as an "azo" dye.

If brother Muadh answers that, I'd like him to start a new thread :) that is one topic which can cause controversy among many Ulama and laypeople alike.

But as he sai and I agree, there is some leeway, some :)
