Jazakallah.

That's precisely what I said above your post, except I didn't mention forums.

Quote:
The main thing to remember is that Gheebah is "When you say something about someone (in their face or behind their back) and it would hurt their feelings if they were to hear it"

Yeah, that's really so.

I guess all those scholars who enjoy watching a session of a Twenty20 cricket and go lambasting a player for the the stupidity of his dismissal are also committing gheebah and don't have the presence mind to recognise it?

I respect the respected Mufti for his opinion, but each to their own. I spoke about this with my local Imam and Hafiz-saab, he begged to differ.

Allah knows best.

I asked A Mufti from S.A ( not mufti A.s Desai) and He said that you have to wipe the impure floor ( of tiles or marble) thrice to make it pure.
This reply i also got from an alimah.

My friend asked from an authentic Darul Ifta of Pakistan and got the reply that doing once is fine.
( i asked another Mufti Sahab of Pakistan from an authentic mufti Sahab and got ^ reply.

I asked that question in general terms and Respected Mufti's answer is correct according to my question.
His answer could be applied to your case where you were describing the bad deed of your friend though you didn't say anything nasty about him. But you shouldn't apply it to this specific cricket player issue. I'll ask him about it.

sis what exactly did you and your friend ask a Mufti?

Please share your question.

Come again?

If someone is describing anything about the actions of another person that may offend him then what difference does his profession make? Pakistan cricket players are sensitive as Teletubbies, and are no doubt going to dislike what the fans say about the quality of their performance whether it's fielding, poor stroke, extras given away, running between the wickets to probably even the size of their mustaches, but that doesn't prevent Asian Ulema from taking a poke at their individual performance.

There is a fine line talking behind someone's back with the intent to slander or not, and being entitled to your opinion plus having the right to express it with reason. Sorry, but I don't agree with the Mufti's answer.

I'd recommend you re-read Taalibah's post.

This Hadith explains it perfectly well, there is no ambiguity in the Hadith.

Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said :"Do you know what backbiting is?" They said, "Allah and His Messenger knows best." He then said, "It is to say something about your brother that he would dislike." Someone asked him, "But what if what I say is true?" The Messenger of Allah said, "If what you say about him is true, you are backbiting him, but if it is not true then you have slandered him." (Muslim)

It doesn't say anything about saying it in someone's absence or in their presence. It simply says to something about your that he would dislike!

That could be anything, so yes these ulama who sit and watch cricket then comment negatively about the player, that is gheebah!

Keep the tongue pure from these things and life will be a much better one.

Yup! Thats right!

I posted my Q to both Mufti Ismail Moosa and Mufti A.S. Desai.

Q:

Assalamu alaikum Respected Mufti

Criticizing the performance of a cricket player would be ghibah or not?

A:

Wa'alaykum as Salam,

That will fall under ghibah, since there is no valid reason for it.

Wassalam,

Ismail

-----

Respected Mufti A.S. Desai haven't replied yet.

I could be mistaken!

"It is to say something about your brother that he would dislike."

I would recommend everyone listen to the lecture by Shaykh Riyadhul Haq on this topic, Awesome!

why sis? Did I ask a hard question? Confused.

I simply asked, did you and your friend ask Mufti about ghiba of a cricket player?
