Truth On The Tongue Of Hadhrat 'Umar (radiallaahu 'anh) - www.muftisays.com/blog/abu+mohammed/557_10-11-2010/truth-...

There is an ocean of evidence proving the legitimacy of 20 rak'ah taraweeh salah. The Sahabah (radiallaahu 'anhum) used to offer taraweeh in this manner. Not a single person from among the Sahabah (radiallaahu 'anhum) ever stepped forward to say that the number of rak'ah are not 20 but are 8. Throughout the ages everyone agreed to the number being twenty, and now the ghair muqallideen all of a sudden claim that it is 8 rak'ah. They are going against practically all the Sahabah and the generations after them.

While the four Imams (Abu Hanifa, Shafi', Malik, Ahmed Ibn Hanbal - may Allaah 'azza wa jal have mercy on them all) disagree in the total number of raka'ah of taraweeh, none of them has given a figure below 20. Taraweeh being 8 rak'ah is not supported by any of them. The 'ijma of the companions (radiallahu 'anhum) holds to be the last word on this subject, for the Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said that after him we should hold fast to the practices of the Khulafa ar-Rashideen.

Not sure what happen to page 2. But from experiance, it is usualy when some one quotes another person and if that quote is too big, it seems to crash.

In future, when quoting, please only quote the main bit and not the whole page.

Sister umm-e-abdullah. Please listen to the talk as mention by brother Seifeddine. It is awsome.

You will fully realise why taraweeh is 20 rakaats and why 8 rakaats is not a sunnah but a sin. Dont quote me on that, I am only saying what the Shaykh says and he his quoting great scholars.

By the way, 8 rakaats Taraweeh was a fitna started by a Shia as they opposed Hadhrat Umar and all the other sahabi (almost). This is also the opinion of ibn Taymiyah.

Its all on that talk.

Shaykh even gives a break down of one Hadith and explains how it got changed from transmission to transmission.

Awesome talk. it can be found here at the bottom of the page.

Those who hold the view that the tarawih consists of eight rak'ahs hold the same belief as the Shi'ah in this regard. It is an accepted fact among the true scholars of Islam that for centuries the tarawih prayer was and is an additional prayer in the month of Ramadan. The Shi'ahs reject the practice of praying tarawih altogether. Similarly, the Ahl al-Hadith sect (or the Salafis) also reject there is an additional prayer in Ramadan. They believe that the tahajjud prayer which is performed during the latter portion of the night throughout the year was merely brought forward (i.e. to the earlier portion of the night) in Ramadan. Thus, in essence, there is no additional prayer in Ramadan according to their understanding.

Furthermore, to believe that the twenty rak'ahs is an innovation of Sayyiduna 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is to undermine the integrity of this great Companion and in fact all the Companions who were present in his time. Generally speaking, this is precisely what the aims of the Shi'ahs are since it is an act of virtue for them to undermine the integrity of the Companions.

From the link provided above, (Where I disagree with Dr Naik and oppose him)

Differences between Tahajjud and Taraweeh

1. Tahajjud is mentioned in The Quran: "Stand up at night except a little." Taraweeh being a Sunnah was established through the hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: "I have made its standing Sunnat for you."

2. Everyone agrees that the number of Rakaats of Tahajjud have been transmitted by Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), the maximum being 13 including Witr and the minimum being 7 including Witr. However no specific number has been transmitted from Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) regarding Taraweeh as clearly stated by ibne Taymiyyah. Therefore the Aimma-e-Mujtahideen differ in the number. Some say 20 and some say 36, even more. ANd we all know why, and that the action of 36 soon stopped.

3. Tahajjud was ordained in Makkah whilst Taraweeh was prescribed in Madina.

4. It is mentioned in the realiable books of the Hambali Mazhab, Muqna: "Taraweeh is 20 Rakaats which a person performs in Ramadhaan in Jamaat. He will read Witr after it in Jamaat. However if he reads Tahajjud then he will make Witr after it."

5. Tahajjud is generally performed after sleeping while Taraweeh is performed after Esha.
