An interesting Hadith

Quote:

From Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما, that Nabi ﷺ said:

“We are an unlettered nation; we do not write nor do we calculate. The month is like this and like this, meaning sometimes it is twenty nine days and sometimes it is thirty.” - Bukhari

As a layperson, here are some thoughts based on the text below and the Hadith above.

Quote:

The opinion of Imam Abu Hanifa regarding the Quran and Sunnah is that the Quran is always the superior source before the Sunnah. No Hadith can overwrite a verse from the Quran. So any apparent contradiction would mean that the Quran is given preference to and then the hadith is used to strengthen a ruling to make an action become Wajib instead of Fard and so on.

What does the Quran say? Consider the very first commandment, READ!

The Quran repeatedly tells us to ponder over the words and reflect. Dig deeper as there is so much we are missing out on.

The Quran is filled with Mathematical Miracles. Mind bogling and many still hidden away miracles. Many verses will make more sense to the future generations, we don't have the tech to comprehend what some verses mean.

If we don't dig deeper and contemplate over the verses, how would we find out the jewels of the Quran?

Or the Rosetta Nebula. No one knew about it until very recently. Is this what Allah was indicating? (Yes there are other explanations)

Discovories are being made now which Allah has already spoken to us about, but we ponder not!

Cosmology, Geology, Biology, Neurology, Oceanography, Physics, Embryology.

Allah is literally telling us to get educated and make use of everything at our disposal in accordance to the Quran and Sunnah. And it's doable!

So, in the case of the Moon sighting and the Hadith itself, the ruling is tied to the physical sighting of the moon (ru'yah), an act any person can perform regardless of their education. So we would assume, but it looks like some cannot tell the difference from a waning and waxing crescent. So all in all, I guess they should get themsleves educated rather than be misled.

Waxing Crescent is the Hilal to start the month. The waning crescent is not the same thing.

This is NOT the Hilal. This is WANING CRESCENT

an expert's expertise was used to determine North South direction. Then only Zuhr and Asr time was determined.
Navigation experts (with Astronomy back ground) were used by long distance Travelers. Even during Hijrah an navigation expert accompanied Rasulullah SAS and Hazrat Abu Bakr RA.
Rasulullah SAS kept things simpler, but at the same time allowed use of expertise.

Note: we are not recommending calculation to declare Hilal. But astronomy can be used to interrogate the witness (as per Hanafi Fiqh)
