"How great is the need and how severe is the necessity of embarking upon seeking Qur'anic and Prophetic knowledge? The condition of many of the Muslims is as the poet said:
'Like camels in the desert killed by severe dehydration, while the water is carried above their backs.'
The Qur'an is present amongst the Muslims, and likewise the Prophetic Sunnah. In spite of this, many Muslims are lost in ignorance, and in their transgression they have strayed."
"(This is) a Book (the Quran) which We have sent down to you, full of blessings that they may ponder over its Verses, and that men of understanding may remember."(38:29)
al-'Allaamah Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said,
"Here are five affairs: Reflecting over the Qur'an. Then there are the fruits of this reflection, which is knowledge. The fruit of knowledge is the increase of faith and more knowledge that occurs in the heart. The fruit of that is the desire to do more righteous deeds, and the fruits of that desire is more knowledge. So pondering over the Qur'an is the initiation and key to good in its entirety."["The Key to the Abode of Happiness" 1/545]
Shaykh Muhammad Ibn 'Abdullah al-Imam said,
"It is well known to the one with sound intellect that understanding the speech of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى and the speech of His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم is more important than memorising it. For this reason, Allaah سبحانه و تعالى called us to ponder over His speech, commanding us with this reflection, while He did not command us to memorise the Qur'an by heart. The Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم encouraged us to understand the religion. He said, 'Whoever Allaah wants good for, He gives him understanding in the religion.' [1] The Prophet did not say, 'He gives him memorisation.'
al-Hafidh Abu 'Ali an-Naysaburi رحمه الله said: 'Understanding is more precious to us than memorising.' [2]
al-Hafidh Hamza as-Suhmi رحمه الله said, 'I said to Abi Bakr Ibn Abdan رحمه الله: "What is the difference between dirayah and knowledge?" He said: "Knowledge is above memorisation."' [3]
However, whoever Allaah سبحانه و تعالى has given understanding along with memorisation, then this is the completion which is not gathered except in a small number of individuals." [4]

Sayyiduna Abud-Dardaa' رضي الله عنه said, "The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said to me,
'How will you be, O 'Uwaymir, when it will be said to you on the Day of Judgement, "Did you have knowledge or were you ignorant?" So if you respond: "I had knowledge." It will be said to you: "What did you do based on your knowledge?" And if you say: "I was ignorant." It will be said: "What was your excuse for being ignorant, why did you not try to acquire knowledge?"'"
[al-Khateeb al-Baghdadi رحمه الله: Iqtidaa ul-'Ilm al-'Amal. Its chain of narration is weak due to the Shaykh from Kalb, Abu Muhammad. Also, Mak'hool is mudallis and he would not explicitly state who he was narrating from in his narrations]
It has been narrated that Sayyiduna 'Ali رضي الله عنه said,
"O carriers of knowledge! Act upon your knowledge, for indeed the one with knowledge is only he who acts on it. There will come a people who will carry knowledge, yet compete with one another to the point that a man will become angry at one of his students for sitting in another person's gathering. There are the people whose deeds will not be raised up to heaven."
[al-Khateeb al-Baghdadi رحمه الله: Iqtidaa ul-'Ilm al-'Amal. Its chain of narration is mawqoof and munqati']
Its has been narrated that Sayyiduna 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood رضي الله عنه said,
"Learn! Whoever has knowledge, must then act (on what he knows)."
And in another narration:
"O people, learn! So then whoever has knowledge, must act (on what he knows)."
[al-Khateeb al-Baghdadi رحمه الله: Iqtidaa ul-'Ilm al-'Amal. Its chain of narration is broken in mawqoof form. However there is sufficiency in the chain of narration that comes before this one]
"The example of knowledge that is not acted upon is like that of treasure that is not spent in the Way of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى."
[al-Khateeb al-Baghdadi رحمه الله: Iqtidaa ul-'Ilm al-'Amal. There is no problem with its chain of narration in mawqoof form. Imam Ahmad رحمه الله also reported it in marfoo' form]
al-Qaasim Ibn Hazzaan رحمه الله said, "I heard az-Zuhree رحمه الله say:
'The people will not trust the action of a person that does deeds but has no knowledge, nor will they be pleased with with the statement of a person that has knowledge but doesn't do deeds.'"
And in another narration: "The people will never be pleased with the statement of one who has knowledge but no deeds or one who has deeds but no knowledge."
[al-Khateeb al-Baghdadi رحمه الله: Iqtidaa ul-'Ilm al-'Amal. Both chains of narration are hasan]
"Knowledge is what comes from the Companions رضي الله عنهم of the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم, and that which does not come from a single one of them is not knowledge."
It is narrated that Sayyiduna 'Abud-Dardaa' رضي الله عنه said,
"Verily, you will never be a scholar until you first become a seeker of knowledge. And you will never (truly) be a seeker of knowledge until you act upon what you know."
[al-Khateeb al-Baghdadi رحمه الله: Iqtidaa ul-'Ilm al-'Amal. This is a weak mawqoof narration]
Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan Ibn Ahmad al-Ahwaazee رحمه الله informed us, saying: "I heard Eezdiyaar Ibn Sulaymaan as-Sooree رحمه الله say: 'I heard Muhammad Ibn al-Mundhir رحمه الله say: "I heard Sahl Ibn 'Abdillaah رحمه الله say:
'All of knowledge is worldly. But the part of it that is for the Hereafter is acting upon it.'"'"
