Zakat in the wrong hands

The Quran tells us in Surah Tauba; Verse 60 which people we can give zakat to. As told to us by Dr Zakir Naik on many occasions. (A brilliant speaker on Comparative Religion)

Zakat is the amount of money that every adult, mentally stable, free, and financially able Muslim, male and female, has to pay to support specific categories people.

This category of people is defined in surah at-Taubah (9) verse 60: "The alms are only for the poor and the needy, and those who collect them, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and to free the captives and the debtors, and for the cause of Allah, and (for) the wayfarers; a duty imposed by Allah. Allah is knower, Wise." (The Holy Qur'an 9:60).

Or in other words

As-Sadaqat are only
1) For the Fuqara (poor), and Al-Masakin (the poor)
2) And those employed to collect (the funds);
3) And to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam);
4) And to free the captives;
5) And for those in debt;
6) And for Allahs Cause;
7) And for the wayfarer (a traveler who is cut off from everything);
A duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.

However

I heard in a talk by Mufti Abdur Raheem Limbada, (During Ramadhan 2010 regarding The Reality of the Salaf Part2, it can be heard here, Brilliant talks, Press the Stand by button to switch it on) that if you have given your Zakat to Dr. Zakir Naik for his TV Channel, then you should call him up and ask for your money back as your Zakat has not been counted. Your obligation has not been fulfilled or lifted. Consider your Zakat donation as Lillah.(To many people that would be "OUCH")

But then how and which renowned scholars of Islam says that we can give Zakat to a satallite channel, even if that is spreading Islam? They are already loaded with TONS of Money. These so-called Scholars are Truly amazing, and they call us (Followers of a School of thought) "Blind Followers" & "Innovators" How Typical, using their own description to describe the followers of a School of thought. SubhanAllah

"You should give out your zakat personally to the poor and needy who are eligible to accept zakat. If you choose to give your zakat to an organization make sure that there are competent Ulama there who are well versed in the laws of Zakat. You should not give your zakat to an organization where there are no reliable Ulama and the organization is not well versed in the laws of zakat. (It can be seen that the Ulama of Peace TV are not competent in the laws of Zakat) If they did not discharge your zakat according to Shariah, your zakat obligation will not be fulfilled.

interesting, i completely agree, never heard of zakaat being given to a nonprofit.. that would open many doors, and we would end up with many rich organizations,, and the only people zakaat wouldnt go to is the poor!

Can one of the knowledgeable brothers who runs this site write a scholarly article on the impermissibility of giving zakah to general charities and Islamic satellite channels/ogranizations?

What I have heard clearly that the ZAKAT is given to a channel as an organisation but as said in the video would be used for Education and funding the poor...therefore the TV channel is an instituion doing the same thing of assisting the poor as an funding organisation would do.

Q.) What is the Islamic legal judgment about charities [run by Muslims] registered as NGO's (Non-Governmental Organizations) collecting and distributing Zakat money? Is it lawful (in Islam) for such organizations to use part of the collected Zakat money to cover their administration costs (involved in the collection and distribution of Zakat)? Some people have claimed that NGOS should not collect or distribute Zakat in the absence of Al-Khilafah, (because Khalifa is the only person who has the sole right to do so). What is the Islamic opinion about such claims?

A.) It is permissible for non-government organizations to collect and distribute zakat money among those entitled to receive it on the condition that they fully observe the Islamic rules and principles concerning Zakat and take due care that the money so collected is duly given to the needy. However, it is not permissible for such private organizations to spend the zakat money to cover their administration costs. It is true that the Holy Qur'an has allowed to give some part of zakat money to "A'milin" i.e. the persons appointed by the government to collect zakat. But it is applicable only in the context of an Islamic State which duly manages collection and distribution of zakat. This principle cannot be extended to the employees of private organizations. The wisdom behind this difference between government and non-government organizations is that in the case of a true Islamic State the persons employed for the collection of Zakat are under constant observation and monitoring of the government itself which can ensure that those employees are not committing any misconduct and that the money allocated for them does not affect much on the interest of the needy for whom the levy of zakat is originally meant. On the contrary, if the same principle is allowed for private organizations there is no recognized authority to check that the zakat money is not spent excessively on the administrative expenses. Therefore, if private organizations elect to collect and distribute zakat they can do so only on charitable basis and no amount from the zakat money should be spent on their employees or on their administration.

Supporting an Islamic cause comes under the category of supporting Allah awj's cause...
So still ok..

Only the minimum is spent on running costs
