The Only Living Sahabi Tree

'The Only Living Sahabi Tree'

The Blessed Tree, A living tree which had sheltered Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه و سلم )

“This tree was blessed with the touch of the Messenger of God (صلى الله عليه وسلم)”

-Shaykh Al-Habib Ali Al-Jifri

“The Prophet sitting under this tree, and its reacting to the Prophet makes the tree the only living terrestrial witness to the Prophet , what we would call in Arabic a sahabi.”

H.R.H. Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad

The tree which shaded Rasoolullahi (صلى الله عليه و سلم) is miraculously preserved by Allah for all this long period. It is the lonely tree available for around hundred square kilometers in that inhospitable desert north of Jordan.

The Story:
It is from the story of the meeting between the Prophet Muhammad and a Christian monk named Bahira. The meeting happened in the shade of a tree. Fourteen hundred years later that same tree was discovered still alive in the northern deserts of Jordan. The only tree alive in hundreds of square miles of emptiness.

Hundreds of evidences were given in ancient Vedas, Tourah and Bible (old Books) on appearance of the Last Messenger, Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم). Many verses can be seen stating name, native and characteristics of the Last Messenger even in recent day copies of old Books though those books had gone through many human interventions and adjustments.

Thus people who know the Last Messenger from Allah from old Books were in anticipation of Him. Here comes story of Bahira, a Christian monk lived in Busra, south of Syria and his zeal to meet the Last Messenger. He happened to watch a caravan of Arabian merchants from Makkah passing by and a young boy is being shaded by clouds wherever he goes. He at once understood significance of the boy and invited the caravan for a banquet.

All members of the caravan attended the feast except the boy whom he was anxiously waiting. So he looked out and found the boy resting under a tree. As per his knowledge of Bible only a Prophet will rest under that tree. So he urged the caravan members to bring that boy to the banquet. He quizzed the boy and concluded that He is the Last Messenger explained in Bible. Bahira convinced the boy’s uncle Abu Talib to return to Makkah with the boy as Jews are in search for Him to harm.

Assalaam Alaikum

According the the Ulema the story behind this article is based on lies. It is used by non-Muslims to try and prove that Rasool Allah Sal Allahu Alaihi Wassalam got stories from the Quran from the Christians.

Here are the reasons why this story cannot be true.

1) The story of the Christian Rahib cannot be true. In the end of it it is mentioned that Rasool Allah Sal Allahu Alaihi Wassalaam was sent back home with Hazrat Abu Bakr Radhi Allah Anhu and Hazrat Bilal Radhi Allah Anhu. This was impossible since at that time, Hazrat Bilal Radhi Allah Anhu was not even born or at the most his age was 2-3 years. Who would send a child home in the protection of a 2 year old and a companion (Hazrat Abu Bakr Radhi Allah Anhu) who was about 8 -10 years old.

2) Also if one was to believe that story then why did not anyone remember it when Rasool Allah Sal Allahu Alaihi Wassalam declared that he was the messenger of Allah.

3) This story is not related in any authentic hadith but was probably started when the Milad ceremonies started and people started making up stories to praise the Prophet Sal Allahu Alaihi Wassalam. There are many such untrue stores especially of his birth and youth.

4) There was a tree on the way to Makkah that Rasool Allah Sal Allahu Alaihi Wassalaam used to rest under. Hazrat Umar Radhi Allah Anhu had that tree cut because many people had started sitting under the tree on their way to Makkah and he did not want a biddah to start. If there had been anything known about this tree then people would have gone to it seeking Barakah.

Wassalaam

Jazakallah, I had also understood that the story may be fake until I heard it in a talk from a well known reliable scholar.

In sirat ul mustafa (saw) by moulana idris kandehlawi (ra), this narration is mentioned in details. Reliable scholars have mentioned that is is authentic (such as at-tirmidhi, hakim, jalalud din suyuti, hafiz ibn hajar al asqalani, hafiz sakhawi, bazzaar, imam jazri - ra) they go on to mention that the bit regarding hadhrat bilal (ra) and hadrat abu bakr (ra) has been erroneously added on by some narrator. So apart from that bit, they deem the rest as sound. It is also mentioned that the prophet (saw) was 12 when this event took place. (volume 1, pages105-108)

Blogger's reply to Mohsin Ayoob is more reliable. You know why? Mohsin's own self-made comment is nullified by the Blogger by presenting some authentic, reliable (almost all) scholars thru Moulana Idris Kandalehvi. Kindly
note Tirmidhi is 1of 6 recognized and enjoyed in the Islamic world.

What is historical account and age determination of that tree ? How can we believe that was the tree of aged more than 1400 years. Now-a-days dating of a tree is very easy. No hadith book mentioned it (some one says Tirmidhi)--Volume and hadith number please. Some seerah book mentioned it without chain of narration.
