if a person has frequent wind problems and this is because they suffer from medical condition of irratable bowels syndrome, diagnosed by their doctor, what is the ruling regarding them? because how do they know that their wind breaking is due to irratable bowel and not digestion?

also if after they make wudhu, they feel the inclination of their wind breaking during their fardh salah , however the wudhu does not actually break until they have reached the sunnah, and then within this sunnah their wudhu breaks again , does this also mean that they are mazur?

What is the ruling for a person with IBS who cannot keep their wudhu for the duration of one salah?

Firstly, the definition of irritable Bowl syndrome is:

A common gastrointestinal disorder involving an abnormal condition of gut contractions (motility) characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, mucous in stools, and irregular bowel habits with alternating diarrhea and constipation, symptoms that tend to be chronic and to wax and wane over the years.

To come up with a ruling we need to look at your case in light of two situations:

1. A person who cannot keep their wudhu for the duration of two rak�aats:

The ruling of a person with IBS can be compared to that of a ma�zoor (excused person) in fiqh. If a person is unable to keep their wudhu for the duration of one salah (at least two rak�aats) then they will be classed as a ma�zoor. For such a person it will suffice to make wudhu once at the time of salah and complete the full salah with this wudhu. However, if any other act nullified your wudhu other that the symptoms of IBS it will be necessary to perform wudhu again. If the it is the symptoms of IBS breaking your salah a new wudhu will be performed at the beginning of each new salah time i.e. Fajr, dhuhr..etc


The ruling of a person with IBS in this case can be compared to a woman who suffers from istihaadha (non-menstrual blood). From the ahadeeth of Rasoolullah the following ruling has been derived:

If a woman bleeds for the duration of one salah she will perform wudhu during the time-span of that salah and then perform the salah with that wudhu. For every salah time she will have to perform a fresh wudhu.

It is narrated from Aishah (radiyallahu �anha) that the Prophet (sallallahu �alayhi wa sallam) said to Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh (who use to bleed outside of her monthly menstrual cycle):

المستحاضة تتوضأ لوقت كل صلوة
�A woman with Istihadhah should perform wudhu for every salah (time)�.
(Ashraful hidayah, part 1, page 239)

2. A person whose wudhu keeps on breaking but can be maintained for the duration of a salah.

The ruling for this person will be to keep performing their wudhu whenever it breaks.

Thus, depending on the severity of your IBSyndrome you will compare yourself to the above two situations and comply with the ruling of the category you fall under.
