Question: music
Assalumu Alaykum. My question is based on music. Many times i listen to lectures on instagram or youtube and some of them contain background vocals not music. Is background music or vocal haraam ? And putting them in islamic videos to attract people's attention haraam ?
Please clarify. JazakAllah Khairan

In Shari'ah the musical instrument is not in itself the objective rather the sound that comes from it. So when the sound is similar to music then it will not be permissible and should be avoided. Some scholars have mentioned this is not permissible because of following the transgressors تشبه بالفساق. Therefore, using background vocals will not be permissible.

(31:6) وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَشْتَرِي لَهْوَ الْحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَيَتَّخِذَهَا هُزُوًا ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ
And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment.

من تشبه بقوم أي من تشبه نفسه بالكفار مثلا في اللباس وغيره أو بالفساق أو بالفجار أو باهل التصوف والصلحاء والأبرار فهو منهم الاثم والخير الخ
