To have any type of mental illnesses is believed to be the will of Allah Ta'ala, and that illness is Allah's expectation and is a part of natural life. It is not a punishment but a test from Allah Ta'ala. According to the Qur'an, the keys of life and death and the mysteries of everything around a person are in Allah's hands.

Thus, being a Muslim patient who has mental illness is not considered a stigma, and his/her caregiver should accept the condition and try to find treatment for him/her, whereas in some other cultures the stigma attached to mental illness has been a problem for mentally ill patients and their caregivers. This stigma has led many family caregivers of mental illness to conceal patients from others. This attitude of family caregivers is a cause of patient's stress.

Seeking treatment for any type of illnesses is based on the belief that Allah Ta'ala did not only create sickness but he also created treatment.

"We sent down in the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe." (17:82)

During the illness Muslims are expected to seek Allah's help with patience and prayers to obtain peace and seeking forgiveness.
