Assalamu alaykum I hope someone who knows arabic can answer this question In arabic the word Sameena means FAT Many Muslims keep this name I was wondering why then in Muslim Name books they have a different meaning for this name, and therefore people keep it due to not knowing. i have noticed one translation they hav given saying it means happy. Is this a good name to keep? I dont think so as people would like been called fat in english so how would they like it in arabic, Imagine going to a arab country and someone insulting u by sayin Sameena. Could a person who knows arabic answer this question. Also in these Muslim name books, i think one reason they may have different translations is because they may be translating it from another language like urdu, pushto or persian. Is this true? Also so when picking names, would you say we pick a arabic name and none of these names from other languages. Also if it is allowed to pick names from these other languages then would you say that you should check as to what it means in the various other languages, first. i think you've caught on what i'm trying to say about this. So if anyone knows anything about this topic can they help Jazakallah Wassalam

It is the right of every child that their parents give them a suitable Islamic name with a good meaning.

In regards to the name Samina there is great confusion and misunderstanding. The actual name is 'Thameena', with a Thaa, and not 'Samina' with a seen as commonly spelt, pronounced and known.

It needs to be spelt correctly and pronounced correctly to avoid confusions with the word Sameena which means fat. Both are Arabic Words.

Persian names can be kept as long as the meaning is sound.

And Allah knows best
