In the religion of Islam, 'Id Al-Adha or Eid al-Adha (Arabic عيد الأضحى, "Festival of the Sacrifice") is a major festival that takes place at the end of the Hajj. It is also known as 'Id al-Qurban or al-'Id al-Kabir (Major Festival). Eid al-Adha marks the completion of the hajj (pilgrimage) rites at Mina, Saudi Arabia, but is also observed by Muslims throughout the world to commemorate the faith of Ibrahim (Abraham).

Eid Al-Adha begins on the 10th of Dhu'l-Hijja, the last month of the Islamic calendar, and lasts for fours days. It begins the day after Muslims on the Hajj descend from Mount Arafat.



Meaning of the Festival

The festival commemorates Allah's gift of a ram in place of Isma'il (Ishmael), whom God had commanded Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice. (In Judaism and Christianity, the child in this story is Ishmael's brother Isaac.)

The devil tried to persuade Ibrahim to disobey Allah and not to sacrifice his beloved son, but Ibrahim stayed absolutely obedient to Allah and drove the devil away. Eid al-Adha is a celebration of this supreme example of submission to God, which is the cornerstone of the Islamic faith (islam means "submission").
Eid al-Adha Observances

On Eid al-Adha, families that can afford it sacrifice an animal such as a sheep, goat, camel, or cow, and then divide the meat among themselves, the poor, friends and neighbors.



The sacrifice is called Qurban. During the sacrifice, the following prayer is recited:

In the name of Allah And Allah is the greatest O Allah, indeed this is from you and for you O Allah accept it from me. Eid al-Adha is a public holiday in Muslim countries. Like 'Id al-Fitr, 'Id Al-Adha begins with communal prayer at daybreak on its first day, which takes place at the local mosque. Worshippers wear their finest clothes for the occasion. It is also a time for visiting friends and family and for exchanging gifts.

Salam

Apart from possible logistical reasons why can't uk accept usa sighting if in hanafi fiqh global sighting is advocated. Ml zameer was saying rejecting sightings from countries in West goes against all the fiqhi rulings.

In terms of possible eid day or ramadan starting (yawm ul shaq) we should wait til midday. Not eat til news filters in.

Personally i dnt agree with waiting 8 hrs but many ulema say wifaqululama are ignoring fiqh over their personal opinions

Back in the days, global sighting meant (and I'll make this easy for you and your location) Leyton, to Leytonstone to Chingford, to Hackney to Tottenham to Enfield and let's include the whole of London and the outskirts of London.

Back in the day when they spoke of global, it wasn't like today's global where you pick up the phone or post on social media etc etc.

The books of Fiqh have definitions based on those days not based on the 21st century.

So I would recommend listening to the Moon sighting conference that was held in your local Masjid in Ramadhan recently.

Mufti Amjad broke this down really well and I've only put it in my words for the readers.

I did mention this to them and also that Islam world in them days was not really global. Someone sighting in morroco couldn't get news to even another part of morroco never mind far as khurasan, Spain, hijaz. Yet they just responded with some quote from nurul idah

Maulana Sameeruddin Qasmi HA of Manchester has cleared up this issue very well in a recent video post.

He says the concept of global moon sighting is not present in any of the books of fiqh of the mutaqaddimeen (earlier scholars). It only made its appearance in nurul idha and some other books after approximately 800 AH, in the times of the Ottoman Caliphate.

The concept of sighting of the moon in the West was sufficient for those in the East meant that if the Qadi declared the new month based on testimony from the West, it would suffice for those in the East, and this is established in fiqh, where the order of the Qadi overrides all other considerations.

Also, the West at the time (800 AH) likely meant the Maghrib (Morocco) as that was the extent of the Islamic Caliphate at the time, and the East likely referred to the areas of Ma wara un nahar (Transoxania). And this masala was also likely hypothetical, due to the distances involved and the time it took for news to be conveyed from one end of the Caliphate to the other. The masala of itself is valid for the time and conditions when it was expounded. It cannot be applied to the conditions of today for obvious reasons.

Of course, if we still had a Caliphate, the issue of moon sighting would be a moot point, as would a lot of other sectarian differences in the Ummah.

Now, it's just a matter of accommodating differences of opinion as best we can without compromising our fiqh principles.
