This is the model of Islam. Young people remain obedient to their elders, juniors remain obedient to their seniors, children remain obedient to their parents, students remain obedient to their teachers, and in a group, they remain obedient to the leader (emir).
Abdullah ibn Abbas (rad) reports the Prophet

(Ibn Hibban 559)
The elder in any respective field should be considered senior in that field. These are our elders. So, give the elders the respect they deserve. According to the narration, we will then receive blessings.
But if we act like seniors and inflate our own importance, what will happen? Then there is no good left. Like Satan said:
“I am better than him” (7:12)
Satan said, ‘I am better than Adam.’ This resulted in eternal damnation. The model of Islam is that we respect our elders, so we won’t be corrupted. This is why one should stay disciplined. One’s security is in one’s discipline. One’s abilities are protected if there is discipline.
If we follow our elders, this will cultivate a temperament of obedience, which is fundamental to Islam. One obeys Allah, the Prophet

Versus someone who doesn’t obey Allah, the Prophet
