Asslamo Allaikum Mufti Saheb,
I have not understood this matter so please help...
As far as my limited Islamic knowledge is concerned there are only 2 classical ways to moonsighting:
- Local
- Global
The latest hybrid version where some people want to follow "Global Sighting" but then set a specific location i.e. Saudia, South Africa is an Ijtehadi issue based on personal preference.
As a Muslim resident in Britain if we are satisfied with the moonsighting system of Hawaii and the news reaches us in an acceptable manner (overlooking the inconvenience of time difference) then doesn’t it fall under “Global Sighting”?
Is there any examples in Hanafi Madhab where a specific location i.e. Baghdad (due to being centre of Caliphate) or even Makah etc has been set as a centre for the whole Islamic world to follow? If so then was it set due to political significance (in case of Baghdad) or religious significance (in case of Makkah)?
My understanding is that global sighting means to accept any Shariah compliant sighting
Jazakallahu Khayran
