As-salam-u-'Alaykum, What I know is that a saff begins from the centre and expands from both sides until completion. If there is such a saff which has gaps in itself that can be occupied and people are in one end and the centre like so:

------------- -------------------------------------------
and people have formed new saffs behind such a saff, will salah of people in the left hand side of the gap illustrated above, be valid?

Also note the gap is larger than being shown i.e. of more than 2 persons atleast
I tried to search but didn't find this type of massala
Jazakumullahu khairan.

In our Masjid, since it was mentioned that there is greater reward when praying on the right side of the Imam, the rows (Saf) are always off balanced. Please quote the Hadiths on balancing of rows.

I personally believe that it is more important to balance the Saf. Please provide the references for the Hadiths.

Answer
1. Sayyiduna Anas (Radhiallaahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu
Alayhi Wasallam) said, 'Complete the front row, thereafter that which is
after it. And if there is a gap, it should be in the last row.' (Sunan Abu
Dawud vol.1 pg.460 Hadith No.:671; Musnad Ahmad Hadith No.:12292). This
Hadith has been classified as Sahih (authentic) by Imaam ibn Khuzaymah vol.3
pg.22
2. Sayyiduna Aaisha (Radhiallaahu Anha) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu
Alayhi Wasallam) said, 'Verily Allah sends his mercy and the angels pray for
those who join the gaps in the rows.' (Sunan ibn Majah Hadith No.:995). This
Hadith has been classified Sahih (authentic) by Imaam ibn Khuzaymah vol.3
pg.23 and Imaam ibn Hibbaan vol.5 pg.532
And in the narration of Tabrani, Nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) added,
'And no person joins the gap in a Saff except that Allah raises him one
stage.' (al-Targheeb vol.1 pg.322)
3. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah
(Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, 'Whoever joins a gap in the row, Allah
will join with him and whoever cuts up a row, Allah will cut off from him.'
(Nasaaiy). Imaam ibn Khuzaymah has classified this Hadith as Sahih
(authentic) vol.3 pg.23
4. Sayyiduna Abu Juhayfa (Radhiallaahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah
(Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, 'Whoever fills a gap in the Saff, he
will be forgiven.' (Musnad al-Bazzaar). This Hadith has been classified as
Hasan (sound) by Imaam Munzhiri - Al-Targheeb vol.1 pg.322
5. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah
(Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) upon seeing that the left hand side of the
Musjid was empty, remarked, 'Whoever occupies the left of the Musjid will be
granted double reward.' (Sunan ibn Maajah Hadith No.:1007 - also see
Majmauz-zawaaid vol.2 pg.94). This Hadith can be classified as Hasan (sound)

What to do when trying to catch a congregation and there is an incomplete.

Answered by Shaykh Ilyas Patel

Situation: Jammat is about to start and there is 1 complete row. A person enters and stands alone in 2nd row. Should a person from 1st row go to the second row? What is MORE of a PRIORITY:
-Making sure the 1st row is complete
or
--Making sure no one is praying alone?
If someone from 1st row goes to second row, then 1st row will not be complete.

2. Is it permissable for a Muslim man to visit (once in a while) and make dua at a grave of a non-mahram muslim woman
who he has never met? (while she was alive)

For example: Can a Muslim man frequently visit and make dua at a grave of a Sahabiya?

jazakallah

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
A1.
Imam Abdal-Hayy al-Lakhnawi, in his very useful collection of legal rulings and useful issues, Naf` al-Mufti wa al-Sa'il, explains,
"The most correct opinion is one will wait until ruku (for someone to come). If someone comes (then one starts, standing with them) otherwise one should pull someone from the row (ahead of him). But, in our time it is better if one does not pull one (from the row ahead) due to gross ignorance (of the rulings of shariah). Because, if one is pulled, he might break his salat and get angry on the person. As mentioned in Jami Rumuz."
(al-Lakhnawi, Fatawa all Lakhnawi, known Naf'al Mufti wa al Sa'il, pg 306)
And Allah alone knows best

.A.2
Yes it would be of great blessing to visit the grave of a woman companion or someone who was righteous and of piety.
Though it is mentioned that Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) when she used to visit the grave of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) she used to cover herself when she was nearer to the grave of Umar (Allah be pleased with her) and this was due to her respect as she did in his life, and not because of the obligation of covering.
It is mentioned by Allama Ibn Abidin in Radd al-Muhtar that different people get different benefit according to their state and gnosis with Allah.
(Allama Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar Ala Dur al-Mukhtar, pg 232 V.2)

I follow Hanafi school of thought and I would like to know that during Salah, is it permissible to move to the front rowsor move to our left/right to fill the gaps that unfortunately come up due to late settling of the people.

Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

It will be permissible to move in order to fill a gap in the row in front of you or to the left or right of you. However, whilst moving to fill the gap, it will be preferable to take a step and then pause and thereafter take another step.

Where shall the Imam stand; Mihrab or First Saff

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

Literally, the Mihrab is used to identify the noblest part of the house, later on it become known as the special section of the Mosque. During the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalams time and the rightly guided khulafa's time is concerned, the custom of making the place where the Imam stands as a separate special unit did not exist. After the early centuries of Islam, the kings promoted this idea. It is in view of the large number of people praying in congregation of a Masjid already short on space that only a place for the Imam to stand is made by going in depth towards the wall facing the Qibla so that full row could be formed behind him. Some scholars have said this practice of reading salah in the Mihrab is a bidah. However, the correct position is that should Mihrabs of this nature to be made for the convenience of the people praying and in the best interests of the Masjids without taking it to be a desired sunnah then there is no reason to call it a bidah.

The Hanafi Jurists have said if the Mihrab is made in the form of a regular place for the Imam to stand and lead the congregation, then it is incumbent on the Imam that he stands slightly outside the Mihrab in a manner that his feet remain out of the Mihrab so that the place in which the Imam and followers are standing can be counted as one. Otherwise, reprehensible and impermissible is the situation in which the imam stands alone in a separate place and the rest of the followers in another. If a Mihrab is so spacious that the imam and muqtadis can fully stand in the Mihrab then becaue of the imam and muqtadis being on common ground the element of detestability will no more be there. (Maariful Qur'an p.274 - p. 275 v. 7)

With regards to your question if the Imam is standing in such a way that his feet is slightly outside the Mihrab then there is nothing wrong with it and there will be no detestability in the Salah. Similarly, if he leads the Salah from the first saff the Salah will be done without any detestability.

Standing alone in the saff

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

It is Makruh to stand alone in the saff where there is space in the front saff. However, if the front saff is full then he should wait for someone to come, until the ruku position. If no one comes, he should then move someone back from the right or left side of the front saff. It is preferable to move back someone who he thinks knows the aforementioned ruling. If he thinks no one knows this particular ruling and by moving someone back it may lead to the person breaking his salah, he should stand alone in the saff and commence his salah. (Raddul Muhtar p.310 v.2)

With regards to your question if someone pats you on your back, gesturing you to move back then without excessive movements (Amal Kathir) move a few steps backwards and join with the person. The people in the front saff will come together without amal kathir.

Quote:
will salah of people in the left hand side of the gap illustrated above, be valid?

We get this very often in my local mosque. The Imam quoted a scholar who passed away in Madinah and was buried at al-Baqi.

He said that according to him, all those people who pray outside of the main saff, their Salah is invalid. But unfortunately I can't find any reference to this.

This is very wrong, every year our imams have to remind everyone that they are not doing it correctly, but do they listen, no!

In my Masjid, we have about 10 people on both left and right for about 5 saffs and the middle completely empty.

Also, Mufti Abdur Rahman ibn Yusuf mentioned that if there is a gap next to you, you should close that gap by moving over slightly (in the direction to the Imam)

Where does the row in prayer begin? Does it begin behind the imaam or from the farthest point to the right?

Praise be to Allaah.
The first row in prayer should begin behind the imaam, then stretch to the right and the left, not from the farthest point to the right as mentioned in the question. The same applies to the second and subsequent rows.

I see some worshippers standing back a little bit from the row. What is the ruling on that?
Praise be to Allaah.
The Sunnah is to make the rows straight, and indeed some scholars have said that making the row straight is obligatory, because when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) saw a man sticking out his chest he said, "Make your rows straight or Allaah will alter your faces." (al-Bukhaari, al-Adhaan, 717). This is a threat and there is no threat except in the case of an action that is haraam or a failure to do something that is obligatory. The view that it is obligatory to make the rows straight is a strong opinion and al-Bukhaari (may Allaah have mercy on him) devoted a chapter to this topic entitled: "Chapter on the sin of one who does not complete the row." (al-Bukhaari, al-Adhaan, chapter 75. al-Fath, 2/245).

Which is better, to pray on the right side of the imam or on his left? Which is better, the right side of the row or the left?.
    Praise be to Allaah.
If only one man is praying with the imam, then he should stand to the imam's right, and not on his left, because of the hadeeth of Ibn 'Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him), who stayed overnight with his maternal aunt Maymoonah (may Allaah be pleased with her); the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) got up to pray qiyaam al-layl, and Ibn 'Abbaas stood on his left, and he reached behind him and made him stand on his right. This indicates that if only one person is praying behind the imam, he should stand on the right and not on the left.

But if more than one person is praying behind the imam, then they should stand behind him, and the right side of the row is better than the left. This applies if the two sides of the row are similar, but if the right side of the row is clearly stretching further than the left, then being on the left and closer to the imam is better.

Based on this, the people praying behind the imam should not all be on the imam's right to the extent that there is no one on his left except one or two men. That is because what is prescribed in the case of three men is that the imam should be between them, with one man on his right and one on his left; they should not all be on his right. This indicates that the imam should be in the middle of the row or thereabouts.

To sum up: the right is better if the sides are equal or close to that. But if the right hand side stretches further, then the left is better, because it is closer to the imam. End quote.

Question was similar to OP, but a related question was also asked.

    ASSALAMU ALAIKUM

    12 Ramadhaan 1435 (10 July 2014)

    *(My name here)*

    Your e-mail dated 9 July 2014 refers.

It is not permissible to leave gaps in the saff. According to the
Hadith, shaitaan fills the gaps. It is sinful to leave gaps.
Nevertheless, the Salaat will be valid. If one is unable to stand on
the hot surface due to the sun, then it will be permissible.
