The incident about the lion is mentioned in Hayatus-Sahabah on the authority of Shaykh Al-Isbahani (RA) quoted from his book " حلية الأولياء وطبقات الأصفياء"
It relates to the famous Sahabi (RA) of Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wassallam) called Safeena (RA) and it is as follows (in original):
حدثنا إبراهيم بن عبد الله بن أبي العزائم ، ثنا أبو عمرو بن أبي غرزة ، ثنا عبيد الله بن موسى ، عن أسامة بن زيد ، عن محمد بن المنكدر ، عن سفينة مولى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال : " ركبت سفينة في البحر فانكسرت ، فركبت لوحا منها فطرحني في أجمة فيها أسد ، قال : فقلت : يا أبا الحارث أنا سفينة مولى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم . قال : فطأطأ رأسه وجعل يدفعني بجنبه ، أو بكتفه ، حتى وضعني على الطريق ، فلما وضعني على الطريق همهم . فظننت أنه يودعني "
He (RA) is a well known Sahabi (RA) who had the ability to carry a lot of weight so Nabi (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) called him Safeena (boat), if you have not heard please ask so I can search that for you.

's freed slave Safeenah رضي الله عنه says, "I was once on board a ship when it shipwrecked. I managed to cling on to one of its planks, which carried me to a dense forest. A lion lived in the forest and (when it saw me) it started towards me to attack me. I however addressed it saying, "O Abu Harith! I am the freed slave of Rasulullah ." It immediately lowered its head as it came closer and continued nudging me with its shoulder until I was clear of the forest and on the main road. It then purred , a gesture I interpreted as a word of farewell. That was the last I saw of it.
