Assalamualaikum,

I have a question regarding Wudhu. is Wudhu counted if an individual uses hair pomade that is described on the tin as "water soluble"? Also, if so, and you use water soluble hair gel or hair pomade and then use oil on top of that, would it still be OK leave it in your hair and do Masah without worrying if the water reaches the hair?

Jazakallah

Not entirely the answer you are looking for, but here is a very basic answer followed by an additional link from a Shafi' scholar with a different answer. You will need to still clarify with scholars.

Question
If you put gel in hair or beard then when you do masah of head or wash face, khilal of beard, is it sufficient to just do it normaly or do you have to wash all the gel out before you start wudhu?

Answer
Gel is like a coating which covers the hair in the same way that henna (mehendi) covers the hair. Therefore, because it is so thick, when one does masah, water does not come into contact with the hair itself. This is because it forms a plastic-like barrier which prevents the water to touch the actual hair and so therefore the masah will be void. In order for the masah to be correct, one must wash all the hair of the head and the beard entirely of the gel so that water can touch the hair, otherwise, the masah will not be valid.

Answered by Shaykh Hamza Karamali, SunniPath Academy Teacher

I would just like to know if someone has applied hair gel to his hair, may he make wudu over it or not?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

assalamu `alaykum wa rahmatullah

The General Answer

The water that one uses in wudu must actually reach the areas that it is meant for. If there is a barrier that prevents the water from reaching the one of the limbs that one washes or the hair that one wipes, then it is as if one has not performed the ablution at all.

Hair gel solidifies after application to form a solid layer that does, in fact, prevent water from reaching the hair underneath. If one every single hair that one wipes over during ablution has a layer of solidified hair gel on it, then the ablution is not valid since one has not wiped any hair at all. If, however, one is confident that one has wiped at least some hair that were not covered by a layer of hair gel, then the ablution is valid.

One way out of this problem is to leave a small portion of one’s hair without any hair gel on it and to wipe over this part when performing ablution. In the Shafi`i school, wiping over the slightest part of the head or hair will result in a valid ablution (although it is superior to wipe the entire head).

Important Note #1

The hair that one wipes must naturally lie within the limits of the head. It is not valid, for example, to wipe the part of one’s hair that naturally falls onto one’s forehead, neck, or shoulders. One would have to wipe the part of this hair that lies closer to the roots within the limits of the head.

Important Note #2

Many kinds of hair gel contain alcohol (i.e., ethanol), which is impure. It is not permissible to apply impure substances to the body and to perform the prayer with an impure substance on one’s body or clothes is not valid. If one does use hair gel, one must seek out a brand that does not contain any impure substances.

And Allah Most High knows best.

Hamza.

Question
Is masah for wudhu valid if a person uses gel on his hair.
Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh
1)- Masah for wudhu will be valid if a person uses gel on his hair, as long as the effect of the gel is similar to that of oil upon the head .
2)- However , if the effect of the gel on the head is more thicker , similar to grease or lard [cooking fat] , then in this case the masah will not be valid .

Radul Muhtaar Pg 154 Vol 1 [H M Saeed]

Q: Please provide me with some advice regarding hair gel, wudhu and salaat. I use a tiny bit (1/2 a centimetre in diameter) for the sake of neatness. The gel appears to be quite soluble in water, such that when I make masah, it becomes different in shape and "style" (meaning it is not completely hard in texture). Putting my hat on renders it completely flat. Normally plain water can remove most of it (I shampoo it off at the end of the day). Is my wudhu valid?

A: If the hair gel is soluble then it is permissible.

Jazkallah. The above answer shows that if it is soluble that it would be OK to use and seeing as I previously mentioned that the tin I use says it is water soluble, then I shouldn't have to worry about this? Do you still recommend i personally ask a scholar?

Not being a scholar of any ilk, I would still further clarify for your own satisfaction. I/we can only help you with links/answers to similar questions, not always the exact question and answer.
