I read an article in seekershub.org saying that a woman needs to cover her stomach and her back as well in addition to the regular awrah (between the navel and the knees). This got me a little confused...
What exactly is the "back"? If this the area between the neck and the private area (in the back), that means a girl is not even allowed to wear a regular t-shirt at home, right? Since in any collarless t-shirt a tiny bit of the area below your neck might be exposed. Am I understanding this correctly? Does this mean she is only allowed to wear shirts with collars at home?
Thanks, but I'm not sure how that answers my question...I was asking about wearing a regular t-shirt. Is that prohibited? In other words, what is the exact definition of "the back" in Islam?
Sorry I was highlighting this portion of the answer from the link:
Quote:
if it fulfills the requirements of covering the `Awrah, then it is acceptable;
Navel to (below) knees is when in the presence of females (Muslim and Non-Muslim).
Please see islamqa.org/hanafi/askimam/29447 for the 3 situations of when this ruling applies and when it doesn't.
There's no Shar'ee definition as to what consists of the back as far as I am aware so the general anatomy will apply meaning the back starts from the bottom of the nape in line with the top of the shoulders (the vertebral column) so accordingly if a T-shirt is such that it uncovers any of that part of the back then it will apply to that ruling. If the T-shirt opening sits on the shoulders and doesn't reveal any part of the upper back then this will be sufficient according to the answer/ruling posted above.
Note: This is not an answer and should not be treated as a ruling. It is merely an explanation of the already available answer from askimam link pasted above
Thanks. However, the article I mentioned also says it is permissible to expose the shoulders, which would not be permissible if the "back" was defined to be the area starting from below the neck, right? Since I'm still confused about this, I just submitted a question to seekershub today so they can clarify what they meant. I can post the answer here if they (Insha'Allah) answer it.
Thus, it will be permissible for a woman to expose the following parts of her body in front of Mahram males: head, hair, face, neck, chest, shoulders, hands, forearms, and legs from below the knees. It will not be permissible to expose the stomach, back or any area which is between the navel and knees. (See: al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, 5/328 & al-Hidaya, 4/461).
In the Asian subcontinent, particularly India, they have what they call a Saree. The Saree consists of a blouse which is can be backless and held together with a string, It is short, exposing midriff too. It could be for this reason why they have also been more specific on the topic/area.
