One of the hardest problems I have is finding cheeses that fit my dietary needs.

The first problem is I'm a vegetarian that will eat dairy products but only if it's certified biological.
The second problem is hallal/non-rennet cheeses.

Now I'm not a fan of most soya based cheese because I can taste the soya. Plus for a lasagna it doesn't melt very well.
So does anyone know of any brands or ways to find good mozarella?

Sorry brother but not very good with food unless eating it. :(

Just one thing I'd like to ask or point out about vegetarianism!

As Muslims, we are not allowed to be vegetarian since Allah has made animals halal for us and we can not over rule that. However, if you are a vegetarian due to health reasons or lack of halal food, then that's another thing.

Also there is a thread on vegetarian food which I'll add to this thread in a while.

بسم الله الرحمن اللرحيم

Alhamdulillah, I just went on a massive cheese hunt some time ago. There are 3 options (general info):

(1) halal certified (look for a symbol);
(2) kosher certified (look for a symbol - google symbols and you'll see about 2 dozen or more!); and
(3) labeled "V" for "Vegetarian - lacto animal rennet free."

I don't know where you are located but... alhamdulillah, I was able to find some no-name vegetarian marble cheese in Superstore (Canada) and it works great on pizzas and grill cheese sandwiches, etc. It is easier to find kosher certified, particularly soft cheese, than it to find the other two. That said, alhamdulillah, I was able to find huge buckets of halal feta cheese but nothing else that was specifically 'halal' certified. Unfortunately for you, the feta is not vegetarian certified. Unfortunately, I was not able to find organic, halal, vegetarian cheese (though, I must admit I was only looking for cheese that would be halal for us to eat).

Insha'Allah you will find some of this helpful. I'm sorry but it seems until the market demands more organic, halal, vegetarian diet options, we have to make do without the organic ... I know, I buy many items organic too so it is upsetting that it is not as readily available.

All that ^ said... perhaps there are specialty stores out there that carry some but how affordable? I don't know.

I'm only looking for information on cheese and not a debate. But since you raised the issue I'll take a moment to list some of my research/reasons... And then I'll let the issue drop because it's controvesial and it almost always seems to end in an argument.

In no particular order of personal importance.

1) With all the tricks and games going on today with the food... I don't believe there is such a thing as hallal meat unless I personally kill it. And I would have to have a good reason to do that. (ie: Life or death in a starvation situation)

2) Animals raised for food today spend most of their lives in conditions that are beyond horrific. As a muslim I'm supposed to stand against oppression. (If you see something wrong, try to change it with your hand. If you cannot, speak out against it. And if you cannot, then at the very least feel that in your heart and this is the weakest level of Iman )

3) The very first convesation Allahسبحانه وتعالى has with Adam(pbuh) is Genesis 1:29 (Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.) There's no mention of eating animals

4)
  • Sura 24:41 All creatures praise Allahسبحانه وتعالى in their own way.
  • Sura 6:38 All creatures form communities like us
  • Sura 25:48-49, 32:27, 79:31-33 That in Allah'sسبحانه وتعالى point of view animals are equal to humans and that HE talks with them just like HE does with us.

Also the Qur'an applies the world "Muslim" not only to humans but also to other animals and the inanimate world. Now if someone wanted to consider that in the gospel of Matthew 25:40 (Saint Jerusalem bible)... The prophet Jesus(pbuh) said, "truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me" Since all creatures worship Allahسبحانه وتعالى and submit to them.. It's easy to see that on some level, we're all brothers and sisters. As such killing and eating an animal purely for the pleasure of the taste is wrong.

5) It takes 7kgs of grains to make 1kg of meat. Without good reason to eat meat, this is a waste and tQur'an, 7:31 makes it very clear that Allahسبحانه وتعالى hates wasters ("eat and drink and be not extravagant; surely He does not love the extravagant")

6) Sura 6:141, 6:151, 16:67 and Sura 23:19 - Allahسبحانه وتعالى puts emphasis on eating fruits and veggies in order to be healthy

7) Abu Umama - He who takes pity
even
on a sparrow and spares its life, Allah will be merciful on him on the Day of Judgement

8) The Prophet(pbuh) said "Allahسبحانه وتعالى will not give mercy to anyone, except those who give mercy to other creatures."

9) An-Nasai, 7:206,239 There is no man who kills
even
a sparrow or anything smaller, without its deserving it, but God will question him about it."

10) The killing of animals without a justifiable reason is a major sin, "Avoid the seven obnoxious things
deadly sins
: polytheism; magic; the killing of breathing beings! Which God has forbidden except for rightful reason." (Sahih Muslim: Kitab-ul-Imam (Ref. No. 46); Chapter. XXXIX, Vol.I; p. 52. Bukhari, 4:23.

LOL I do appreciate the effort and thanks anway.. This going to be hard to find! There's no hallal/kosher/veggie certified mozarella. And unfortunately that's what makes a good lasgna!

So basically you are Vegetarian due to the circumstances, if an animal is brought up humanely and slaughtered Islamically, you ll eat it.
MashaAllah, I guess its good to leave the doubtful matters.

P.s. I don't agree with quoting the biblical verses, since we do not know which of the verses are true revealation due to its tampering. Also even if it were true verses, its abrogated for the Ummah of Muhammad(saw), since we have the Quran.

I hope you find your halal cheese soon. :D

Jazakallah brother.

Brother Umar123 has already answered the question about your position and I agree with him totally.

And don't worry, I wasn't intending to debate. I was only putting forward my thoughts.

Anyway, inshaAllah we will make an effort to find the right cheese for you.

(I love cheese too)

Talking of mercy to Animals (and rightly so) please see this thread on the power of Allah's mercy and slaughtering. Please watch the videos.

Truly beautiful.

Pure Submission.

And as you mentioned "Submitting" then please also note that every thing is in submission to Allah, wether it is humans, animals, planets or plants. And that's a fact so we can't say animals submit to Allah so we can't eat them. That is wrong, totally wrong as the vegetables also submit!

I've already made it clear under what conditions and circumstances that I would be willing to play a part in an animal's death and consumtion. Again, let me say that I do NOT want to debate this issue. However I think it's pretty much a given that an animal has certain fundamental rights to dignity.. Both in its life and in its death.

I only use the catholic old latin Vulgate for my research and the current french translation of the Saint Jerusalem bible when discussing with others. I never use any of the various protestant bibles.

I've thought about it but I just don't have the patience. ( Or the time)

It doesn't matter which version you use. Even if you were to get the original Injil, its abrogated since Quran has been revealed. Its clearly mentioned in the hadith that the Prophet (saw) got angry when Umarرضي الله عنه got a Torah to read. Also its mentioned in another Hadith that if Musa(as) were to come at present, he would have followed Prophet Muhammad(saw). Obviously, we believe that the previous scriptures in its original form was from Allah Ta'ala. But we (the ummah of Prophet Muhammad(saw) ) are not bound to follow it. Also none of the earlier scriptures exist in it original form today.

Wallahu alam.

Yes there is... there is kosher mozerella cheese ***at superstore*** and we can eat it so it is halal for us. It may not be organic though. I can't recall the brand-name though, it was pretty good alhamdulillah. I didn't check their no-name mozerella cheese - that might be vegetarian!

Either way brother, it seems you are in Canada so if I find any cheese that fits the bill, I'll post here for you insha'Allah.

I apologize for leaving out 2 important points pertaining to kosher:
(1) that it be certified by an Orthodox Jewish group; and
(2) while kosher is permissible for us, it is better to go with what is preferable (especially since halal options are more readily available now than they may have been a decade or more ago).
