Westfield, Stratford.

On my visit to westfield in Stratford, London. The kids wanted to eat fish and chips, so I queued up only to be told by the person at the counter that the fish was Haram. I'm not sure if he was Muslim, could've been a Hindu. This was then confirmed by another non-muslim also serving at the tills, he also said to me that they weren't halal.

Alhumdulillah, the beard gave away the identity of being a Muslim once again.

Once I was told that it was not halal, I didn't bother asking any questions, but the guy at the counter said the food gets mixed with the chicken, beef and other stuff. He also said that "sometimes its halal depending on who's here"

Safest thing to do is leave it, go for Subway.

By the way this was at Harry Ramsden on the lower ground floor.

We were told few years ago that harry ramsden fish batter contains beer, since then heard of many non-Muslim food outlets using beer in the batter.

Subhanallah, today its a great blessing being recognised as a Muslim, because people will tell you truthfully if something you are going to buy is unsuitable or doubtful, this has even happened at places we thought were reliable. Masha.Allah with the will of Allah this has occurred with us a few times.

The thought of even a morsel of haram food entering our body, then having our ibadah rejected for next forty days does not bear thinking about, imagine it happening just before ramadhan, the whole month wasted, may Allah protect us.

Our batter

Deliciously light, golden and crispy... and that's all we can tell you. After all, the recipe remains a closely guarded secret!

This goes for many fish & chips joints.

Are there vegetarian options available?

Our restaurant menus also feature a 'vegetarian dish of the day', plus one or two suitable starters. What's more, we fry our chips in corn or vegetable oils, so they are suitable for vegetarians.

This brings us back to this topic "Suitable for vegetarians but not Muslims"

If Beer is used in their Batter, then it is suitable for vegetarians but not Muslims.

I have also been informed that Harry Ramsden fry their meat with the fish and chips. So along with the beer batter, please ask ALL fish and chip shops if they fry their meat together. They may use vegetarian oil, but fry the meat and not meat together. This defeats the point and is still unacceptable.

I think this thread needs a major bump.

Many Muslims still eating here. Please pass on the message.

Also, there's another CHIP + FISH place on the second floor near the childrens play area (westfield stratford) opposite Sports direct. My wife went to ask about their process and Alhumdulillah the English man said straight away that the chips weren't Halal because they fried everything together, she didn't bother asking about the fish.

Please warn others of this.

As far as I can remember, the English man told my wife straight up that it wasn't halal.

Could be the oil they use!
They may serve other things that gets mixed in the same oil!

Certain "Fries" come pre dipped in some sort of coating to give it that extra crunch.

Allahu Alum.

what made you assume a non-muslim place would be halal by default in the first place?

its not just potatoes though is it.

there is of course the frying agent which is usually beef drippings or lard in non-muslim fish and chip shops.
and of course a fish and chips shop does not just sell fish and chips. there is all sorts such as sausages, meat pies, meat pasties, etc.
