Asalamualykum, brothers and sisters.

I have recently been on a trip around the world, which was fantastic. Currently i am spending 3 months in South Africa. Whiulst travelling eating is a major issue especially for muslims because we Must eat that which is Halaal. I have noticed that in most asian countries like Pakistan, India, Malasia, Thailand Mc Donalds is Halaal and most muslims eat without any hesitation. Due to the fact that alot of muslims live in those countries it is expected that the Halaal status of Mc Donalds may be trusted. In South Africa being a non msulim country i was shocked to see that all the Stores in S.A are certified halaal. I would like to know if anyone has travelled in these parts and ate from these Mc Donalds in South Africa? May i trust the Halaal certification here?

wali kum as salaam,

I have not been to South Africa but if I was in your place I would eat at the places where it's certified Halal. I would certainly turst the certification, and remember that ur not a resident of that place. And if u have the intentions of not eating haram food then and its written halal then i think that there is no harm in eating the food. And Allah knows the best.

Assalamu alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

It is important for a Muslim to be circumspect with Food especially with fast food restaurants like Macdonalds. A Halaal certificate is not a guarantee that you are in fact consuming Halaal. In some places, "Halaal Certificate" is big business so it must be established wihout doubt.

Q. What is the status on King Pie in S.A.? There is a lot of friends who still argue with me on the issue of Mcdonald's South Africa. Can you please give me the latest on this.
A. King Pie and McDonalds are NOT approved by SANHA.

A Short Guide to Choosing a Halaal food outlet
Who Manages the food outlet?
The food outlet must be owned (not managed) by reliable, trustworthy Muslims . They should be conscious and sensitive to Islamic requirements. If you are in doubt, avoid it - that is best for your taqwa and is certainly for the betterment of your Imaan.

Are there any food contamination concerns?
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala encourages the Muslims to eat those food products which are Tayyib that is to say that they would are deemed halaal beyond doubt so be very careful about the risks of contamination. It is a surprise to some, but Halaal foods fried in the same oil as Haraam are no longer Halaal. Halaal foods smeared by Haraam oils or other bits and bats cease to be Halaal. We need to know how food is prepared in the kitchen to assess the risks of contamination with Haraam foods etc. From testimonies of persons who have worked in these kitchens, we can say with relative certitude that the risk of contamination is extremely high. Once I asked a colleague who worked in Pizza Hut on the weekends if the vegetarian pizzas are painstakingly kept separate from the meat pizzas e.g. separate knives, utensils etc. The colleague said that usually but when the kitchen gets busy no one is so orthodox about such matters and separate knives do not become an issue. Welcome to the world of fast food folks!
Another example, a strictly fish outlet - served nothing but only fish - looked absolutely fine until a Muslim employee expressed concern that the owner and family regularly prepare their meals at the same kitchen serving pork, bacon, etc. prepared in the same fryer, utensil, etc.
If Haraam is sold in the outlet, take my advice and get right out. Is it really worth the risk? Are their no trustworthy Muslim takeaways, fast-food places? Seek a viable alternative.

Do they serve Alcohol?
Some justify frequenting food outlets serving alcohol with comments like "alcohol is not served" or "not served to us".
We must remember that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) warns Muslims to stay aloof from those places where one could be accused of participating in Haraam e.g. drinking alcohol. Please be clear in your minds that food prepared by non-Muslims or served in a restaurant serving alcohol is not Tayyibaat (not Halaal beyond doubt). Clearly, It is not permissible to eat from restaurants that serve alcohol.

Ulama and Friends thatnk you very much for your advices. It seems that the Halaal certificate game is BIG hear in South Africa. Regarding Mc Donalds they are certified by the Islamic Council of South Africa. Below is a summary from a new friend of mind that lives in South Africa.

All stores are non muslim owned. And all stores are supplied by one Supplier in each product. All the varuious products are halaal and certified by different certifying bodies in S.A. Strick Staff control is practised. And no store in S.A serves alcohol or pork.
They are all halaal

try to eat something else besides Mc Donalds if you are not entirly sure.
I am posative that there must be some vegetarian options there.

As salaamu alaikum wr wb,
I have researched this & found that in the UK if a food product is less than 2% contents of animal fat or other haraam content then they do not need to declare it, they can still pass it as suitable for vegetarians, so if u have asked them behind the til and they've told u it's suitable for vegetarians then by law they are correct to say this, they wouldnt know any better. also I was told by a manager of a mc donalds that even though the food may be fried separate, the oil is filtered through one filter in the morning before work commences therefore would u really like to eat this food? I certainly wouldn't! plus before the fries are given to the chains, they are already partially fried in beef extracts, if you find that tasty then carry on eating it. Theres plenty of muslim halaal places out there so if you really want a burger go to a muslim takeaway.
I've done my job by alerting you, it's upto you whether you want to take heed or not, if you are going to pretend to be naive about this matter then carry on eating at macdonalds but if u doubt then keep away or reasearch it on the internet for yourself.
It's not worth it, I gave up eating there years ago when I found out, maybe you should too, & tell others.

Im no expert, and i wouldn't expect anyone to just trust me, but i am south african, and i can vouch that most of the McDonalds in South Africa are halaal, certified. And not just any dish dash halaal, but its properly done. However tho, that does not mean that one can just go to any McDonalds in SA to eat, because NOT all of them are halaal. Areas where muslims dont reside at, do not bother having there outlets certified understandibly. So do exercise caution!

slmz... i see that most Mc Donalds in South Africa are halaal.. seen da ICSA certificate. so i called them to find out about it.. and their reply was that it's 100% halaal... i doubt that they would lie... but if they are then its up to them and Allah. hope they not just doing it for money!
