UK Parliament To Debate Banning Non-Stun Slaughter on 09-06-2025

On the 9th of June 2025 Parliament will debate a petition signed by over a hundred thousand people to ban non-stunned slaughter here in the UK.

Current UK law requires all animals to be stunned before slaughter; however, the law provides an exemption for the Muslim and Jewish community to slaughter without stunning.

A small percentage of Halal slaughter is non-stunned here in the UK and all Shechita (Jewish) slaughter is non-stunned, both collectively only representing a small percentage of slaughter overall.

All non-stunned Halal slaughter in the UK and EU is carried out humanely, in fully licensed and regulated slaughterhouses, adhering strictly to animal welfare laws. These practices take place in the same controlled environments and under the same rigorous standards as conventional slaughter, ensuring the highest level of care and dignity for the animals at every stage.

HMC is already in communication with other partner groups to respond and contribute to this debate and will communicate this to the Muslim community in due course.

It would be highly beneficial to contact your local MP and clarify their understanding and view on this debate. Unfortunately, there is lots of misinformation being circulated on social media which is not only inaccurate but shared to demonise the Muslim community and create hate.

We ask Allah سبحانه وتعالى for His assistance and seek His protection.

This is the reason we recite surah kahf on friday.
If need arises we must be ready to live in a capsule and "Eat fish only", many hajees are doing that during Haj.

A good leson can be learnt once again inshaAllah. We should stand our ground wherever possible!

If they can have a set of rules for a minority group (that is so powerful) surely we can ask at the time and expose the double standards.

(At the same time - I don't think the halal industry should be monopolised in such ways, we should have one set standard) Personally, I think the users of HMC certificates (in restaurants) are expoilting the label and making non Haram available in a supposedly 100% Halal industry. And their disclaimer is: we only certify the meat and poultry. The belly dancers is the restaurants responsibilty. :(

Halal Debate Review: A triumph of truth 🇬🇧☪️🐑

I managed to watch most of the parliament debate today en route to a protest outside Downing Street.

The Muslim independent MPs rose to the occasion, delivering a strong performance that utterly eclipsed the woefully isolated Rupert Lowe. His feeble motion, scraping together a mere trio of MPs no one has ever heard of.

The independents not only upheld the sanctity of halal practise but also unveiled its profound humanity, putting the spotlight on its superiority over non-halal alternatives.

They also rightly confronted the grotesque elephant in the room: the venomous Islamophobia and anti-Muslim bigotry festering at the heart of the UK's anti-halal debate.

I declare this day as a resounding victory for the halal industry and British Muslims as a whole. All praises to Allah swt for this win.

Bismillah.
I wonder how many of the establishments advertising their food as Halal are actually selling non-Halal.
During COVID lockdowns era, we had at least two very busy fast food places in my neighbourhood exposed and fined by authorities for selling non Halal meat, as Halal.
I also know someone who is acquainted with a wholesale supplier of Chicken, both Halal and non Halal. He said the supplier told him many Muslim owners of Fast food places were purchasing the non-Halal because it is cheaper whilst advertising as Halal.
We even had cases of condemned meat that is meat that did not pass the quality and health inspection in Abbatoirs, that should have been disposed off, being purchased by Muslims and resold to the Muslim public.

And ALLAH knows best.

Parliament Reaffirms Religious Freedom in the Wake of Non-Stun Slaughter Debate

11th June 2025

The Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC) welcomes the UK Government’s decision to uphold the current legal protections for religious slaughter, following a debate held on Monday 9th June 2025 in Parliament. The debate was triggered by a petition that called for a ban on non-stun slaughter which gained over 109,000 signatures.

Representatives from HMC who were in attendance at the debate as observers, were reassured by the government’s clear position, articulated by Daniel Zeichner MP, Minister for Rural Affairs, that religious communities will continue to be allowed to practise their method of slaughter in accordance with their faith. The Minister confirmed that while the government prefers animals to be stunned prior to slaughter, it fully respects the rights of Muslims and Jews to prepare food in line with their religious beliefs. These rights have been protected in UK legislation since the Slaughter of Animals Act 1933 and remain an important expression of religious freedom.

Importantly, the majority of parliamentarians who contributed to the debate voiced support for these freedoms. MPs from across party lines recognised the harmful and unbalanced narrative that often unfairly targets the Muslim community and Halal practices under the pretext of animal welfare.

The debate highlighted the recognition that animal welfare must be looked at holistically, from the conditions animals are raised in, to their transport and handling, right through to the point of slaughter. Animal welfare is not the sole preserve of one method of slaughter, but a collective responsibility that must be continuously improved across the board.

As HMC, we reaffirm our commitment to working constructively with government, regulators, and faith communities to support improvements in animal welfare, while preserving the fundamental right to religious practice. We also advocate for greater transparency and clearer labelling of meat products, allowing consumers to make informed choices. Although 88% of Halal meat in the UK is currently pre-stunned, independent research shows that over 70% of British Muslims prefer non-stunned Halal meat — a clear disparity that must be addressed through honest labelling and better industry standards.

The outcome of this debate is a welcome reminder of the UK’s long-standing commitment to religious freedom, balanced policymaking, and the importance of resisting divisive and discriminatory narratives. HMC will continue to defend the rights of our community, promote ethical standards, and work collaboratively for a future that protects both faith and animal welfare.

Finally, we would like sincerely thank all the parliamentarians who attended the debate and spoke in favour of religious freedom and the protection of non-stunned slaughter.

The only reason why its allowed is because of discrimination laws, they would love to ban halal method, if they do they also have to ban kosher meat and that means being 'anti semitic'
