Just over a week ago I was in Leicester and I bought some Egyptian mangoes from someone near Jameah Masjid ends. Anyway the mangoes were big and sweet. Generally there's a difference in taste between Indian and Pakistani mangoes and others but these were up there with the South Asian mangoes . I've had mangoes when I went Zanzibar too but they were more sour than sweet. I've tried Brazilian and I think Ivory Coast mango in UK but I've not been tempted to buy it again. Just wanted to ask apart from South Asian mangoes which countries mangoes do members enjoy.

I don't buy mangoes.

There were rumours a couple of years back about the Indian mangoes being injected with some kind of chemical to preserve it for longer or to make them sweeter. I remember not seeing them around for some time.

Not sure how true that was, but not seeing them around as much, especially in places where they sell well, like Wembley, a highly populated Hindu area, gave more reason to believe the rumours.

In my mind the best mangoes in the world come from Guimaras in the Philippines - Mangga Kalabaw (Carabao Mango) is the best variety and the sweetest variety of mango in the world. One of these fresh off the tree beats anything I've had from any other country in either the Eastern or Western hemisphere.

Best is Kesar from India, very sweet n we buy loads of them, other varieties from India are Badami, Alphonso.
Honey brand are from Pakistan not better than Kesar, however the Chausa brand from Pakistan are good.

All other brands fromother countries dont really like as not as sweet.

Alphonso and Kesar are the best. No wonder they are considered king and queen of mangoes respectively.

The problem we have in the UK is that they are expensive and you get many rotten ones in your box.

I wonder if many youngsters in the UK even buy mangoes nowadays considering the cost compared to other fruits and chances of getting a rotten one when you cut through it?

In India, mangoes vary from around $1 a kilo to about $5 a kilo. That sounds like about par with UK prices.

Incidentally, Maleehabadi mangoes were the cause of friction between Shaykhul Hadeeth Hazrat Zakariyya Kandhelvi RH and a relative. The story is mentioned in his Aap Beeti.
