Very interesting, and on the face of it, it is very good news. The only thing to keep in mind is that. Even though a particular chain may be using meat that is truly Halal today, there is no guarantee that they might switch to some other meat which would not comply with the Halal standards we all agree with here. Them using Halal eat today could be a coincidence not that they really care about Halal standards. So the actual long term solution is that there be reliable Halal certifying bodies in Saudi that ensure this.

Secondly, while the focus is mostly on chicken being hand -slaughtered, one must not forget that in the case of beef, there is the question of vertical and horizontal cut. And the vertical cut is not considered permissible according to the opinion of those Ulama who we tend to follow in these matters. Did hear someone say (probably on this forum) that goat/lamb are the safest choices. Allah SWT knows best.

Edit:

I had written:

“Saudi supermarkets sell meat that is not even labelled Halal at all (let alone getting into the Halal technicalities), i.e. it is the same meat brands that are sold in supermarkets in the United States. So as a whole you can understand how lax their approach is to Halal food.”

However I cannot confirm if that is true. It seems to be the case in Dubai however I am not sure if this is applicable to Saudi as well.

Seems like those companies all get beef and chicken both from the same source(s), with the exception of McDonald's which gets its beef from the UAE.

Saudi Arabia is preparing to open its first alcohol store in the capital Riyadh which will serve exclusively non-Muslim diplomats, a source familiar with the plans and a document showed on Wednesday.

Customers will have to register via a mobile app, get a clearance code from the foreign ministry, and respect monthly quotas with their purchases, the document said.

The move is a milestone in the kingdom's efforts, led by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to open the ultra-conservative Muslim country for tourism and business as drinking alcohol is forbidden in Islam.

It is also part of wider plans known as Vision 2030 to build a post-oil economy.

The new store is located in Riyadh's Diplomatic Quarter, a neighbourhood where embassies and diplomats reside and will be "strictly restricted" to non-Muslims, the document said.

It was unclear if other non-Muslim expatriates will have access to the store. Millions of expatriates live in Saudi Arabia but most of them are Muslim workers from Asia and Egypt.

A source familiar with the plans said the store is expected to open in the coming weeks.

Saudi Arabia has strict laws against drinking alcohol, which can be punishable by hundreds of lashes, deportation, fines, or imprisonment and expatriates also face deportation. As part of the reforms, whipping has largely been replaced by jail sentences.

Al-Nu’man ibn Bashir reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between the two of them are doubtful matters about which many people do not know. Thus, he who avoids doubtful matters clears himself in regard to his religion and his honor, and he who falls into doubtful matters will fall into the unlawful as the shepherd who pastures near a sanctuary, all but grazing therein. Verily, every king has a sanctum and the sanctum of Allah is His prohibitions. Verily, in the body is a piece of flesh which, if sound, the entire body is sound, and if corrupt, the entire body is corrupt. Truly, it is the heart.”

Regarding Al Baik now using 100% local chicken instead of Brazilian and other imported chicken:

I recently met with a supervisor who oversees multiple branches of Al Baik. He shared with me their internal communications about changes in their supply chain.

They have indeed switched to using *locally slaughtered* chickens for their bone-in chicken products. However, they are *still using imported chicken* for all boneless products, including nuggets, burgers, etc. Since their boneless chicken (fillet) is still imported, it’s best to avoid these items until they switch their entire supply chain to locally slaughtered chicken. (They’re using the same oil for both.)

InshaAllah, if enough people suggest to them that we would prefer they use local chicken throughout their entire supply chain, they may make the change, which would be greatly beneficial to us as regular customers.

I also recommend verifying this information for yourself. Avoid asking regular employees, as some may be unaware (I was told by some that everything is Brazilian). Make sure to speak to a supervisor for accurate details.
