Lesson 3 formally introduces “Jumla Ismiyya (i.e. nominal sentences)” in Arabic with Mubtada & Khabar but it was our intention to introduce it earlier and make you practise, practise & practise so it is solidly engraved in your mind.

At this point we would like to introduce “Detached Pronouns” and a technique for memorisation. Research has shown that we (humans) memorise by making links in our mind and by the process of association. Many students give up Arabic because they find it hard to memorise table upon table!

At this point, we would like you to flip your right hand so your right thumb is pointing your right. Look at your thumb and your fingers as that is a natural mechanism given to us by Allah (SWT) for you to make an association, link and memorise tables in Arabic.

  1. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RECITE THESE TABLES AT 200 mph!
  2. TAKE IT EASY, RELAX AND DO IT REALLY SLOWLY!
  3. Starting with your right index finger (your finger of Shahadah) you will notice that your finger has three pores (top, middle and bottom). This corresponds to “HE, THEM (2 HE’s), THEY (more than 3 HE’s).
  4. Your next finger also has three pores and this corresponds to “SHE, THEM (2 SHE’s), THEY (more than 3 SHE’s).
  5. Your next finger also has three pores and this corresponds to “YOU (MASCULINE), YOU (2 MASCULINE), YOU (more than 3 MASCULINE YOU’s).
  6. That leaves your pinky finger also has three pores and this corresponds to “YOU (FEMININE), YOU (2 FEMININE), YOU (more than 3 FEMININE YOU’s).
  7. Finally your thumb ONLY has two pores this corresponds to “I” and “We”

Job done...

Take a good look at your upside down hand and read, 3 -7 again until you understand the association.

Touch the pores on your finger and say:

  • Finger of Shahadah: HE, THEM (2 HE’s), THEY (more than 3 HE’s).
  • Next Finger: SHE, THEM (2 SHE’s), THEY (more than 3 SHE’s).
  • Next Finger: YOU (MASCULINE), YOU (2 MASCULINE), YOU (more than 3 MASCULINE YOU’s)
  • Pinky Finger: YOU (FEMININE), YOU (2 FEMININE), YOU (more than 3 FEMININE YOU’s).
  • Thumb: “I” & “We”

Now open this document and practise reciting detached pronouns on your fingers 5 times. Ignore the attached pronouns for the time being. We have drawn a picture for you to understand this memorisation technique even further.

http://www.central-mosque.com/fiqh/pronouns.pdf

Familiarise yourself with using the pores on your finger to memorise tables.

DO NOT RUSH THIS! TAKE AS LONG AS IT TAKES! EVEN FOR THOSE WHO KNOW THIS TABLE IT MAY BE BENEFICIAL TO PRACTISE THIS TECHNIQUE SO YOU CAN MEMORISE MORE TABLES (IN BOOK 2 ETC.)

Detached Pronouns

Them (2 He) Huma هُمَا
They (3+ He) Hum هُم
She Hiya هِيَ

W-Salam,

Don't worry about mastering it or remembering it at this point, repeat 5-10 times whenever you get a chance and that's it.

The hand drill be used extensively for other things...Just get used to the principle in it and how to use it for the time being. That's why I gave this Lesson a little longer for people to  get used to the "hand drill".

I Am finding thetable easier to learn by doing the tips of the finger first and then whole second row and then the whole of the third row. To me this methods feels easier.

Asslamo Allaikum,

DON'T TRY TO MEMORISE, RATHER PRACTISE THE PATTERN!

I would not advise it this way because you are memorising out of synch and it will throw you all sorts of problems later on.

You are training your mind to memorise in a certain way so it is advisable to follow the pattern.

Don't burden yourself and don't get stressed too much, just repeat a few times in the right order and that's all.

Jazakullah Khairun

Remember three key things:

  1. Don't worry about memorising
  2. Don't get stressed
  3. Don't try to recite/repeat at 200mph

Your memory works by repetition and association, that's all. Whenever you get a chance just repeat on the tip of your fingers REAL SLOW.

Speed etc will come later, Insha'Allah.
