assalaamu 'alaykum ww
respected brothers...need help with this subject. I know the answer from the following fatwa but i need something with which i can converse with someone who insists (and is influencing my young students)

In normal circumstances, one cannot perform Salaat with the shoes on as it will be disrespectful to the Musjid and furthermore, wearing shoes alters the correct posture in the sitting position of Salaat.

However, due to circumstances, for example, being in a jungle, etc. one will be excused for performing Salaat with the shoes on.

Entering the Masjid with shoes on is one issue and not done by anyone, but Praying with them on is not a problem from what I understand.

There are Hadith that mention the Prophet (SAW) would pray with his slippers and shoes on etc.

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) lead us in prayer whilst he was wearing his shoes, then he took them off [whilst still praying], and the people took their shoes off too. When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said the Tasleem [at the end of the prayer], they said: "O Messenger of Allaah, you took off your shoes, so we took off our shoes too." He said: "Jibreel came to me and told me that there was some dirt on them, so I took them off. When any one of you comes to the mosque, let him look at his shoes, and if he sees any dirt on them, let him wipe them. And they can be purified with dust."

In those days, they didn't have carpeted floors like today so the issue of wearing them inside the Masjid is not done today. But being out and about, then yes it is allowed as long as the shoes are clean.

Allahu Alum, I'm no scholar but the problem (or maybe not a problem) in this case is with the Ghair Muqallids who will take a Hadith like the one mentioned above and act on it as if its law.

There is also this Hadith that strengthens it;

The Prophet (SAW) said, "Be different from the Jews, who do not pray in their shoes or in their leather slippers (khufoof)." (Abu Dawood, 652)

So I guess being outdoors means its better to pray with shoes on, but when the area is clean (carpeted etc) then the shoes would be removed the same way everyone removes their shoes when they enter their homes.

Once again, this also confirms all that has been mentioned by all;

islamqa.info/en/ref/20258

Although, the Salafi dont mention the bending of the toes in sujjud etc.

Cleanliness is vital, so if by praying with shoes on will dirty the floor then they must be removed and the Salafi agree with that too

Asslamo Allaikum Aapa,

I like brother Abu Muhammad is confused so can you elaborate the question:

  1. Are you claiming that it is not permissable to pray with shoes in the Hanafi Madhab?
  2. Are you asking that we shouldn't go inside the Masjid with shoes?
  3. Is the Salafi claiming that its superior to pray with shoes on regardless?

Our dear and respected South African Ulamah have enumerated a number of conditions for praying on the shoes probably based on the writings of Shaykh (Mufti) Taqi Usmani (HA) & Allamah Zahid Al-Kawthari (RA) referenced by Shaykh (Mufti) Yusuf Ludhyanwi Shaheed (RA) here

Conflicting Deobandi Fatwaas:

  1. Permissable only on open-toe sandals
  2. Mustahab (preferred) to pray with shoes but Najasah cannot be removed by Rubbing
  3. Mustahab (preferred) to pray without shoes
  4. Permissable as long as they are clean (no conditions)

I always thought that its pretty simple issue like 4 (above) mentioned by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani here

wa'alaykumus salaam
I do know its permissible since its proven from hadith however I thought there may be explanations why we pray in masjids without shoes (apart from the dirt issue) and why this hadith is not acted upon widely. Basically this sister is putting down my girls for being hanafi and ignoring clear hadith (Many other issues keep coming up which alhamdulillah i'm sometimes able to explain i.e. 8 taraweeh)...and told to read salaah with shoes. What do the urdu fatwas say? and i cant find anything by Mufti Taqi in the link

W-Salam,

Before discussing with a Madkhali ask two simple questions:

  1. Which Scholars do you follow?
  2. If they say I follow Qur'aan & Sunnah then ask, "Are you then claiming" that the verse in the Qur'aan is redundant and useles, "Ask the people of Knowledge (Ulamah) about what you don't know [16:43]"

The issue of shoes is answered by Shaykh (Mufti) al-Shaykh ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Humayd of Saudia and published in Fataawa Samaahat  on page 81

هل صحيح أن الإمام محمد بن عبد الوهاب قد قال إن المشي بالنعال في المسجد أمر مشروع وإن زيارة القبور محرمة ؟ أفيدونا وجزاكم الله خيراً .

Is it true that Imaam Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhaab said that walking with shoes in the mosque is something which is allowed in Islam, and that visiting graves is haraam? Please advise us, may Allaah reward you with good.

...With regard to walking with shoes in the mosque and his saying that this is allowed in Islam, this is not correct. Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhaab did not say that walking with shoes in the mosque is something which is allowed in Islam. He said the same as was narrated in the ahaadeeth, which is that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When any one of you comes to the mosque, let him look at his shoes, and if he sees anything dirty on them, let him wipe them, because they may be purified by rubbing them with dust.” This refers to shoes and to the mosque at that time [which was simple and unfurnished]. However, if the mosque is furnished [with carpets and the like], we should keep it clean from shoes and not enter wearing shoes, lest we make the place dirty by bringing in something unclean on our shoes. This was indicated by some of the scholars and is part of what Shaykh Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhaab said. He did not say that it is allowed in Islam to enter the mosque with shoes...

With regard to it being haraam to visit graves, he did not say this at all. Imaam Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhaab followed the ahaadeeth, and the hadeeth says: “”I used to forbid you to visit graves, but now [you should] visit them, for they are a reminder of the Hereafter.” (Narrated by Muslim, no. 977). And he (may Allaah have mercy on him) said to those who visit graves that when they visit them, they must abide by the etiquette of Islam and make du’aa’ as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) taught his companions: when you enter the graveyard, say: “Peace be upon you, dwellers of these abodes, believers and Muslims. We will, whenever Allaah wills, join you. May Allaah have mercy on those of you who were first (to die) and those who were last. I beg of Allaah salvation for us and for you. O Allaah, deprive us not of reward (similar to theirs) and lead us not astray after they are gone, and forgive us and them.” (Saheeh Muslim, no. 974, 975)

This is precisely the position of the Hanafi Madhab i.e. that the matter of praying with shoes is permissable but not on Carpets etc...

Here is the fatwa of another Mufti of the deobandi maslak(it contains other issues as well)

Praying salaah with shoes on and making masah on socks
Q. A brother in a nearby masjid is claiming that it is permissible to make salah in ones shoes and the only reason people don't enter masaajid nowadays with their shoes on is because of the carpet. Is there a refutation against this that would help the other people in the masjid understand what the correct position is? He also had a question about masah on shoes/cotton socks that I was trying to research. He said that fiqhus-sunan claimed Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) made ruju'a before his death and said that it was permissible to make masah on cotton socks. I remember it saying that he made ruju'a about the jurabain in hidayah, but I don't remember jurabain being translated as cotton socks.

A. If one's shoes are clean and free from impurities, then it is allowed to perform Salaah in them when one is in an area where shoes are normally worn. As for wearing them in the prayer area of the masjid to perform Salaah, this is not acceptable, seeing that the masjid is the house of Allah and hence, utmost respect and reverence must be shown to it. In the Holy Quran, Allah commanded Moosa (AS) to take off his shoes when he was on a holy area. In Sura Taha verse 12, Allah said to him, 'Remove your shoes, you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa'. While commenting on this verse, the Mufassireen have stated that Moosa (AS) was commanded by Allah to take off his shoes while he was on Mt. Tuwa because it was a sacred and holy place. As such, all other places that are known to be sacred and holy in Islam would take the same law, and this also includes a masjid which is the house of Allah.
Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) made ruju, that is, he revoked his former opinion of non-permissibility of masah on Jurabain, and accepted the opinion of his two students Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad. They held the opinion that masah will be allowed on non-leather socks when they fulfilled three conditions. These are:-

1) These must be so thick that water does not seep through the socks to wet the feet.

2) That one can walk on these socks (alone) to a reasonable distance without being torn.

3) That they (the socks) will remain firm on the feet while walking without using anything to keep it on the feet. That is, while walking in them, they will not move downwards to the feet from the shin. They must be able to grip the feet firmly.

Imam Abu Hanifa accepted this opinion, and this is also the opinion of Imam Shafi and Imam Ahmad. Imam Malik does not accept the validity of masah over the jurabain.

All the Fuqaha (jurists) and the four Imams are unanimous that masah will not be permissible upon the cotton or nylon socks.

And Allah knows best.

Islamweb.net also issues a Fatwa

Summary Response:

We are obligated to honour the Mosques and to sacnctify them and to make them clean (Pure) as they are houses of Allah (SWT) as Allah (SWT) states:

[22:30] ... whoever observes reverence of the things sanctified by Allah, it is good for him with his Lord...

[24:36] (The guided people worship Allah) in the houses that Allah has permitted to be raised, and where His name is recounted and His purity is pronounced, in the morning and in the evening,

...These mosques are not the places meant for urine and filth... [Bukhari]

This it will NOT be permissable to walk and bring shoes with Najasaah (from Masjid Toilet etc) into places for Salah even if the time is short (for the person to pray).

This Sister is about 2 decades late because this was an issue by ignorant Salafees 20 years ago and fights used to break out because Salafees insisted on walking in Masjid with shoes on!

@sister Ummi Taalib, ask the sisters if they have been to the Haramain. You dont see the salafi asking the police for daleel because its common sense.

If they attempted to wear their shoes inside the Haram where the Prophet actually did these acts, they'd get kicked out. Its about cleanliness thats all.
