Hadhrat Imaam Abu Haneefa (رحمه الله) stated that he had never met a Faqeeh greater than Imaam Ja'far Ibn Muhammed (رحمه الله). [Tadhkira Vol.1 Pg. 146]

Since all Fuqahaa are considered to be the siblings of Hadhrat Imaam Abu Haneefa (رحمه الله) in the field of Fiqh, the above accolade is certainly noteworthy.

Imaam Ja'far (رحمه الله) studied under the following eminent scholars:

1. His father, Imaam Baaqir (رحمه الله) [passed away in 114 A.H].
2. Hadhrat Urwa bin Zubair رحمه الله
3. Hadhrat Imaam Ataa رحمه الله
4. Imaam Naafi رحمه الله

The following were some of the prominent scholars who narrated Ahadeeth from him:

1. Imaam Maalik رحمه الله
2. Hadhrat Sufyaan Thowri رحمه الله
3. Hadhrat Sufyaan bin Uyayna رحمه الله
4. Hadhrat Imaam Abu Haneefa رحمه الله

The above proves that Imaam Ja'far (رحمه الله) did not hold any beliefs that were contrary to those of the above scholars. http://www.muftisays.com/blog/Seifeddine-M/570_16-11-2010/academic-background-of-imam-abu-haneefah-%28rahmatullahi-alaih%29.html

The Hadith master Ibn Shahin al-Hanbali رحمه الله (d. 385) said: "Two righteous men have been tried because of evil people: Ja'far ibn Muhammad and Ahmad ibn Hanbal." [1]

Similarly Ibn al-Salah رحمه الله (d. 643) said: "Two Imams have been afflicted because of their followers although they are innocent of them: Ahmad ibn Hanbal was tried with the anthropomorphists (al-mujassima), and Ja'far al-Sadiq with the (Shi'a) Rejectionists (al-Rafida)." [2]

Ja'far al-Sadiq رحمه الله intensely detested the Rafida Shia, whom he knew to object to his ancestor Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه and his successor Umar رضي الله عنه.

Ibn Uyayna رحمه الله and Ibn Abi 'Umar al-'Adami رحمه الله narrated from Ja'far رحمه الله, from his father رحمه الله: "In the time of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), the Family of Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) were called the family of the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم)."

When Mu'awiyah ibn Hudayj رحمه الله mentioned that his neighbour claimed Imam Ja'far رحمه الله said he repudiated Abu Bakr and 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما), Imam Ja'far رحمه الله retorted: "May Allah repudiate your neighbour! By Allah, I hope that my parentage with Abu Bakr benefits me."

In another narration he says: "What man curses his own grandfather? May the intercession of Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) not include me if I do not consider Abu Bakr and 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) my leaders! I repudiate whoever repudiates them!"

Al-Dhahabi رحمه الله stated that the latter statement is mutawatir from Ja'far رحمه الله, then invoked curses upon anyone who claimed that Imam Ja'far رحمه الله spoke such words hypocritically or meant otherwise.

In another narration he said: "Whoever claims that I am infallable and that obedience is due to me, I repudiate them; I also repudiate whoever claims that I repudiate Abu Bakr and 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما)."

In yet another narration he said to a questioner about Abu Bakr and 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما): "You are asking about two men who tasted from the fruits of Paradise."

Imaam Ja'far (رحمه الله) also made the following statement about Hadhrat Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه): "You are 'Siddeeq' (Most truthful). If a person does not regard you as 'Siddeeq', Allaah should not make him realise any of his ambitions in this world and in the Hereafter." [Kashful Ghumma Pg.220]

Maslama ibn Jaf'ar al-Ahmasi رحمه الله asked Imam Ja'far رحمه الله: "Is is true you hold that whoever speaks a triple Divorce in ignorance is held to have divorced only once?" He replied: "This is not our position! Rather, whoever speaks a triple divorce, it is as he said."

Among the forgeries which Shia attribute to Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq رحمه الله is his supposed condoning of temporary marriage (mut'ah). Al-Bayhaqi cites Ja'far as calling mut'ah "pure fornication" ('ayn al-zina). [3]

"He who brings the truth and those who confirm it: those are the godfearing." (39:33)

Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq رحمه الله said, "There is no disagreement that the one who brought the truth was the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), and the one who confirmed it was Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه). What virtue could be greater than that? May Allaah be pleased with all of them."

Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq رحمه الله was once asked by the famous mystic Shaqiq al-Balkhi رحمه الله to describe what chivalry was [Ar. futuwwa]. So Imam Ja'far رحمه الله asked him back, "Well, what do you think it is?" Shaqiq رحمه الله replied, "If we are given [favors or gifts from someone] we thank them, and if we are not given [anything], we remain patient."

"Even the dogs here in Madina do that!" Imam Ja'far رحمه الله exclaimed. Then Shaqiq رحمه الله asked, "O son of the Messenger of Allah [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him], then what is chivalry to you all [of the Prophetic household]?"

Imam Ja'far رحمه الله replied: "If we are given, we show appreciation... but if we are not given anything, we still thank them."
[Imam al-Qushayri, al-Risala]

It was said that when the name of the Prophet [Allah's peace and blessings be upon him] used to be mentioned in front of Imam Ja'far رحمه الله, he would become pale out of his love, respect and awe. This was coupled with his steadfast following of the Sunnah [life example] and emulation of his great-grandfather, the Prophet [Allah's peace and blessings be upon him]. Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyya رحمه الله said:

"It is proper to know that Sayyiduna 'Ali رضي الله عنه and his family members have been lied on, especially Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq رحمه الله, in a manner which none from amongst the companions have been lied upon."

And Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyya رحمه الله also said:

"None has been lied upon the way Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq رحمه الله has, while he is free of that (which the Raafidah ascribe to him)."

Muhammad Ibn Fudayl narrated from Salim Ibn Abi Hafsah, saying:

"I asked Abu Ja'far رحمه الله and his son Ja'far رحمه الله about Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه and Umar رضي الله عنه. They said: 'O Salim, have allegiance for them and disassociate yourself from their enemy. For indeed they were two Imams of guidance."

Hafs Ibn Ghayath said: "I heard Imam Ja'far Ibn Muhammad رحمه الله saying: 'I do not hope for anything from the intercession of 'Ali except that I likewise hope for the same thing from the intercession of Abu Bakr. He gave birth to me twice.'" [Tahdheeb al-Kamaal 5/82]

Imam adh-Dhahabee رحمه الله said: "The mother of Ja'far as-Sadiq رحمه الله was Umm Farwah bint al-Qasim ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr at-Taymee. Her mother (i.e. the maternal grandmother of Imam Ja'far رحمه الله) was Asmaa bint 'Abdur Rahman ibn Abi Bakr (as-Siddeeq رضي الله عنه). For this reason Imam Ja'far رحمه الله used to say: 'Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq gave birth to me twice' (i.e. his lineage is directly linked to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq رضي الله عنه in two ways)."

Al-Mizzee narrated with his chain of transmission leading to Yahya Ibn Saleem from Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq رحمه الله that he said:

"Indeed the evil ones from the people of Iraq claim that we revile Abu Bakr and Umar while they are my fathers."
