56. Imam Muhammad ibn al-Hasan (رحمه الله) said: 'Imam Abu Hanifa (رحمه الله) informed us from Abu Ishaq as-Sabi'ee (رحمه الله) from al-Aswad ibn Yazeed (رحمه الله) from Ummul Mu'mineen Hadrat 'Aa'isha (رضي الله عنها). She (رضي الله عنها) said, 'The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) would make love to his wife, then sleep without touching water; then if he awoke towards the end of the night he would return [to his wife] and then do ghusl."

Imam Muhammad (رحمه الله) said: "This report is more lenient for people; this is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifa (رحمه الله)."

59. Malik (رحمه الله) informed us: "az-Zuhri (رحمه الله) narrated to us from Ibn as-Sabbaq (رحمه الله), that the Messenger of Allaah (سبحانه و تعالى) said, 'Community of Muslims, this is a day which Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has made a festival for the Muslims, so do ghusl; and whoever has some scent, it will not harm him to put some on; and don't neglect to use the tooth stick (miswak/siwak).'"

60. Malik (رحمه الله) informed us: "Al-Maqburi (رحمه الله) informed that Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) said, 'Doing ghusl on the day of Jumu'ah is incumbent upon every person who has reached puberty, just like the ghusl due to sexual intercourse or ejaculation [janabah].'"

62. Malik (رحمه الله) informed us: "Az-Zuhri (رحمه الله) informed from Salim Ibn 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) from his Father (رضي الله عنه), that a man from the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) of the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) entered the Masjid on the day of Jumu'ah while 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) was addressing the people so he asked, 'What time is this?' The man answered, 'I was coming back from the market when I heard the call, so as soon as I had done wudu' I came.' 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) said, 'And doing wudu' too, when you know that the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to order ghusl!'"

Imam Muhammad (رحمه الله) said: "It is better to do ghusl on the day of Jumu'ah. It is not obligatory and concerning this there are many reports."

63. Imam Muhammad (رحمه الله) said: "Ar-Rabi' Ibn Sabih (رحمه الله) informed us from Sa'eed ar-Raqashi (رحمه الله) from Anas Ibn Malik (رحمه الله) from al-Hasan al-Basri (رحمه الله), both of them attributing it to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) that he said, 'Whoever does wudu on the day of Jumu'ah, that is well and good; and whoever does ghusl, then [know that] doing ghusl is better.'"

64. Imam Muhammad ibn al-Hasan (رحمه الله) said: "Muhammad ibn Aban (رحمه الله) informed us from Hammad (رحمه الله) from Ibrahim an-Nakha'i (رحمه الله); [Hammad (رحمه الله) said] I asked him about cupping doing ghusl on the day of Jumu'ah, and doing ghusl after cupping*, and doing ghusl on the two days of 'Eid and he answered, 'If you do ghusl, well and good, and if you leave it, there is no blame on you.' I said to him, 'Did not the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) say, "Whoever goes to Jumu'ah, let him do ghusl."' He said, 'Yes, but it is not one of the obligatory matters. It is comparable to His (سبحانه و تعالى) saying, "Call witnesses when you trade." [Surah al-Baqarah, 281]. So whoever brings a witness has done best, and whoever leaves it carries no blame. And [it is comparable] to His (سبحانه و تعالى) saying, "Then when the prayer is finished spread through the earth." [Surah al-Jumu'ah, 10]; so whoever spreads forth, there is no harm in that, and whoever remains seated, there is no harm in that.' Hammad (رحمه الله) said, 'and I saw Ibrahim (رحمه الله) come to the two 'Eid prayers without doing ghusl.'"

65. Imam Muhammad ibn al-Hasan (رحمه الله) said: "Muhammad ibn Aban (رحمه الله) informed us from Ibn Jurayj (رحمه الله) from 'Ata ibn Abi Rabah (رحمه الله) who said, 'We were sitting with 'Abdullah Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) and the prayer-time [for Jumu'ah] arrived, so he called for water and did wudu. Some of his Companions asked him, 'Will you not do ghusl?' He said, 'It is a cold day.' So, he had done wudu."
