Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said: " 'Umar Ibn Dhirr al-Hamdaanee رحمه الله informed us from Mujaahid رحمه الله, that Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما, when travelling, would not pray more than two rak'atayn in the obligatory prayer, neither praying before or after it, and would pray by night on the camel's back, whichever way he was facing. He would get down a little before dawn and perform the Witr on the ground, and when he stayed a night in a camp he would pray the night through."

Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "Muhammad Ibn Abaan Ibn Saalih رحمه الله informed us from Hammaad Ibn Abee Sulaymaan رحمه الله from Mujaahid رحمه الله, who said, 'I accompanied 'Abdullaah Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما from Makkah to Madeenah, and he would pray every prayer on his camel facing towards Madeenah, motioning only with his head, and making his prostration lower than his bowing, except the obligatory prayer and the Witr, for he would dismount for these two. I asked him about that, and he said, "The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم used to do it: wherever he was facing he would motion with his head, and he would make his prostration lower than his bowing."'"

Imaam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "Ismaa'eel Ibn 'Ayyaash رحمه الله informed us, 'Hishaam Ibn 'Urwah رحمه الله reported to me that his father رحمه الله used to pray on the back of his mount, wherever it faced and would not put his forehead down, but would indicate bowing and prostrating with his head. Then when he dismounted, he performed the Witr."

Imaam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "Khaalid Ibn 'Abdillaah رحمه الله informed us from al-Mugheerah ad-Dabbee رحمه الله from Ibraaheem an-Nakha'ee رحمه الله that Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما used to pray on his mount whichever way he faced, when it was a voluntary prayer, only indicating [the prostrations and bowings]. He would recite [an aayah requiring] prostration and would [indicate the prostration by a] movement, and he would dismount for the obligatory and Witr prayers."

215. Imaam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "Al-Fadl Ibn Ghazwaan رحمه الله informed us from Naafi' رحمه الله about Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما. He [Naafi' رحمه الله] said, 'He would, whichever way his mount faced with him, pray voluntary prayers. When he wanted to perform the Witr he would get down and perform the Witr.'"

61. A Man's Praying, Then Remembering That He Must Pray A Missed Prayer

216. Imaam Maalik رحمه الله informed us: "Naafi' رحمه الله narrated to us that Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما used to say, 'Whoever forgets one of his prayers, and does not remember it until he is with the imaam, then when the imaam concludes, let him pray his prayer which he had forgotten and then pray the later prayer after it.'"

Imaam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "We adhere to this, except in one instance; when he remembers it while he is praying a prayer at the end of its time and he fears that if he were to begin with the earlier prayer, the time of the second one would run out before he could pray it. In that case, let him begin with the second one, until he finishes, then pray the earlier one after that. That is the verdict of Imaam Abu Haneefah رحمه الله and Sa'eed Ibn al-Musayyab رحمه الله."

62. A Man's Praying The Obligatory Prayer In His House And Then Catching The Prayer [In The Mosque]

217. Imaam Maalik رحمه الله informed us: "Zayd Ibn Aslam رحمه الله narrated to us from a man of Banoo ad-Deel, called Busr Ibn Mihjan رحمه الله from his father, that he was with the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم when the prayer was called and the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم got up and prayed while the man sat where he was. The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم asked, 'What prevented you from praying with the people? Are you not a Muslim man?' He answered, 'Yes, but I had already prayed among my family.' So the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, 'When you come, then pray with the people, even though you have already prayed.'"

Imaam Maalik رحمه الله informed us: " 'Afeef Ibn 'Amr as-Sahmee رحمه الله informed us from a man of Banoo Asad, that he asked Aboo Ayyoob al-Ansaaree رضي الله عنه, saying, 'I pray and then come to the Mosque and find the Imaam praying. Should I pray with him?' He answered, 'Yes, pray with him and whoever does that shall have an army's share of the spoils or the equivalent of that.'"

Imaam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "We adhere to this, and we also adhere to the verdict of Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما, that we should not repeat the prayers of Maghrib and Subh; for Maghrib is an uneven [number of rak'aat] and a voluntary prayer should not be uneven, and there should be no voluntary prayer after Subh. Likewise 'Asr, in our opinion, has the same ruling as Subh and Maghrib. That is the verdict of Imaam Abu Haneefah, may Allaah have mercy on him."

220. Imaam Maalik رحمه الله informed us: "Naafi' رحمه الله informed us that food would be brought to Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما, then he would hear the recitation of the Imaam, while still in his house, but he would not hasten from his food until he had eaten enough."

Imaam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "We do not see any harm in this, but we prefer not to choose that [for meals]."

64. The Excellence Of 'Asr, And On Praying After 'Asr

221. Imaam Maalik رحمه الله informed us: "Az-Zuhree رحمه الله informed me that as-Saa'ib Ibn Yazeed رحمه الله saw 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه beat al-Munkadir Ibn 'Abdillaah رحمه الله for [praying] two rak'atayn after 'Asr."

Imaam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "We adhere to this. Voluntary prayers should not be prayed after 'Asr. That is the verdict of Imaam Abu Haneefah, may Allaah have mercy on him."

In Nur al-Idah (Arabic-English, p129), it is stated, "It is disliked to offer voluntary prayer after the 'Asr prayer even if the sun has not yet changed colour. This is due to the hadeeth that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, 'There is no prayer after the prayer of 'Asr until the sun sets, and there is no prayer after the Fajr until the sun rises.'" [Bukhari, 581]

Imaam Maalik رحمه الله informed us: "My uncle, Abu Suhayl Ibn Maalik رحمه الله, informed me that his father رحمه الله said, 'I used to see a rug belonging to 'Aqeel Ibn Abee Taalib رضي الله عنه put out on the day of Jumu'ah against the western wall of the mosque. Then when the rug was covered completely by the shadow of the wall, 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه would come out to the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah, and then we would go back and have our daytime rest.'"

225. Imaam Maalik رحمه الله informed us: "Az-Zuhree رحمه الله informed us from as-Saa'ib Ibn Yazeed رضي الله عنه, that Sayyiduna 'Uthmaan Ibn 'Affaan رضي الله عنه added the third call to prayer on the day of Jumu'ah."

Imaam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "We go according to all of this; the third call which was added means the first call. That is the verdict of Imaam Abu Haneefah, may Allaah have mercy on him."
