Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said:

"We adhere to this; the combining of two prayers means that the first is delayed so that it is prayed in its latest time, and the second is hastened, so that it is prayed in its first time. A report has reached us that Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما, when delaying the prayer, prayed Maghrib before the redness in the sky disappeared. This is at variance with what Imam Malik رحمه الله narrated."

"A report of 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه has reached us; he wrote to the outlying lands, prohibiting them from combining two prayers and telling them that combining two prayers in one time is one of the major wrong actions. We have been told this by trustworthy narrators, narrating from al-'Ala Ibn al-Haarith رحمه الله, from Makhool رحمه الله."

Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما asked, "Where were you?"

209. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Naafi' رحمه الله told us that Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما did not pray a voluntary prayer with the obligatory prayer, when travelling, neither before it nor after it, except in the middle of the night, when he would pray on the ground or on his camel whichever way it faced."

Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said:

"There is no harm in a traveller's praying on his riding beast, performing its movements in whatever direction he is facing, and making his prostration lower than his bowing. As for Witr, and the obligatory prayer, they should be prayed on the ground; many narrations to this effect have come down to us."
