171. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Makhramah Ibn Sulayman al-Walibi رحمه الله told us, 'Kurayb رحمه الله, the mawla of Ibn 'Abbas رضي الله عنهما, informed me that Ibn 'Abbas رضي الله عنهما told him that he spent the night at Maymunah's رضي الله عنها, the wife of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, and she was his [maternal] aunt. He said, "So I lay down, with my head on the narrow side of the pillow, and the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم and his wife, lay down with their heads on the long side of the pillow.

The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم slept, until, when it was midnight, or a little before or a little after, he sat up and wiped the sleep from his face with his hands, and then read the last ten ayaat of Surah Aal 'Imraan. Then he stood up to a [water-] skin hanging their, and did wudu' from it in a thorough manner. Then he stood praying.

So I got up and did the like of what the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم had done, then I went and stood at his side. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم placed his right hand on my head and took hold of my right ear and tweaked it. And so he prayed two rak'atayn, then two, then two, six times; then he performed the Witr and then lay down until the mu'adhdhin came, and so rose and prayed two light rak'atayn, then went out and prayed the dawn prayer."'"

Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said:

"The night prayer in our opinion is in two. However, Imam Abu Hanifa رحمه الله said, 'The night prayer is up to you, you can pray two, or four, or six, or eight, or as much as you will, with a single saying of Allahu akbar, but the best form of it is in fours.'

As for Witr, our verdict on it and that of Imam Abu Hanifa رحمه الله are the same: Witr is three, and they should not be seperated by saying as-salamu 'alaykum."

Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Isma'eel Ibn Abi Hakeem رحمه الله narrated to us from 'Ata' Ibn Yasar رضي الله عنه, that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said Allahu akbar for one of the prayers, then signalled to them with his hand to, 'remain where you are.' So the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم went off and then returned with the traces of water on his skin and prayed."

Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said:

"We adhere to this. If anything befalls a person in prayer that breaks his wudu', then there is no harm in him turning away without speaking, doing wudu', and then continuing from where he had left off. However, it is better that he speak, do wudu' and begin his prayer afresh, and that is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifa, may Allah have mercy on him."

Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "'Abdur Rahman Ibn 'Abdillah Ibn Abis-Sa'sa'ah رحمه الله informed us from his father رحمه الله, that Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri رضي الله عنه told him that he heard a man in the night reading Qul huwa'llaahu ahad repeatedly. When the morning came, he told the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم [and it was] as if the man belittled it. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, 'By Him in Whose hand is my self, it certainly equals a third of the Qur'aan.'"

Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Yahya Ibn Sa'eed رحمه الله informed us: He said, 'I heard Sa'eed Ibn al-Musayyab رحمه الله say, "Mu'adh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه said, 'That I should remember Allah بحانه و تعالى from the beginning of the day until the night is more beloved to me than that I should charge upon the finest horses from the beginning of the day until the night.'"'"

If he takes care of it, he keeps it, and if he lets it go, it gets away.'"

49. A Man To Whom Someone Says, "as-Salaamu 'Alaykum" While He Is Praying

Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Naafi' رحمه الله informed us that Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما passed by a man who was praying and said, "as-Salaamu 'Alaykum," to him and he returned the greeting. Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما went back to him and said, 'When it is said to one of you as-Salaamu 'Alaykum while he is praying then he should not speak, and he should gesture with his hand.'"

"We adhere to this; a man should not, while praying, answer the greeting as-salaamu 'alaykum when it is said to him; and should he do so his prayer will be invalid. 50. Two Men Praying Together [Jama'ah]

177. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "az-Zuhri رحمه الله narrated to us from 'Ubaydillah Ibn 'Abdillah Ibn 'Utbah رحمه الله from his father رحمه الله. He said, 'I went to see 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه during the heat of midday, and found him praying [a voluntary prayer]. So I stood behind him, but he brought me closer until I was alongside him on his right. When Yarfa' رحمه الله came, I stepped back and we made a row behind him.'"

Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Ishaq Ibn 'Abdillah Ibn Abi Talhah رحمه الله narrated to us from Anas Ibn Malik رضي الله عنه, that his grandmother invited the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم to some food. So he ate and then said, 'Stand up and let us pray with you.' Anas رضي الله عنه said, 'So I got up and went to a mat of ours, which had been down so long it had become blackened, and I sprinkled it with water, and the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم stood on it.' [Anas رضي الله عنه] said, 'Then I formed a row with the orphan behind him, and the old woman behind us, and he prayed two rak'atayn with us and then departed.'"
