66. The Recitation In The Prayer Of Jumu'ah, And What Is Encouraged Of Silence

226. Imaam Maalik رحمه الله informed us: "Damrah Ibn Sa'eed al-Maazinee رحمه الله from 'Ubaydullaah Ibn 'Abdillaah Ibn 'Utbah رحمه الله, that ad-Dahhaak Ibn Qays رحمه الله asked an-Nu'maan Ibn Basheer رضي الله عنه, 'What did the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم used to recite after Sooratul-Jumu'ah on the day of Jumu'ah?' He answered, 'He used to recite, "Hal ataaka hadeethul-ghaashiyah."'" [1]

227. Imaam Maalik رحمه الله informed us: "Az-Zuhree رحمه الله narrated to us from Tha'labah Ibn Abee Maalik رحمه الله, that, in the time of Sayyiduna 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه, they used to pray on the day of Jumu'ah until Sayyiduna 'Umar رضي الله عنه came out. He would come out and sit on the minbar, and the mu'adhdhin would give the call. Tha'labah رحمه الله said: 'We sat, talking. When the mu'adhdhin was silent and 'Umar stood, we became silent, none of us speaking.'"

67. The Prayer Of 'Id And Its Khutbah

232. Imaam Maalik رحمه الله informed us: "Az-Zuhree رحمه الله informed me from Abu 'Ubayd رحمه الله, the mawlaa of 'Abdur Rahmaan رحمه الله, that he said, 'I attended the 'Id with 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه, and he prayed, finished [his prayer], then gave the khutbah saying, "These are two days on which the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم prohibited fasting: the day of your breaking your fast ['Id al-Fitr], and the other [being] the day when you eat the meat of your slaughter ['Id al-Adha]."

[Abu 'Ubayd رحمه الله] said, 'Then I attended the 'Id with 'Uthmaan Ibn 'Affaan رضي الله عنه, and he prayed, concluded, and gave the Khutbah, saying, "Two 'Ids have come together in this day of yours, so whoever of the dwellers of 'Aaaliyah wants to wait for Jumu'ah let him wait for it. Whoever wants to go back, let him go back, for I have given him leave."'

He went on, 'Then I attended 'Id with 'Ali رضي الله عنه, when 'Uthmaan رضي الله عنه was besieged, and he prayed, then concluded and gave the khutbah.'"

233. Imaam Maalik رحمه الله informed us: "Ibn Shihaab رحمه الله informed us that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to pray on the days of Fitr and Adha before the khutbah. He mentioned that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه and Sayyiduna 'Umar رضي الله عنه used to do that."

Imaam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "We go according to all of this. 'Uthmaan was making a concession to the dwellers of 'Aaaliyah, for they were not residents of the city. That is the verdict of Imaam Abu Haneefah, may Allaah have mercy on him."

Imaam Muhammad رحمه الله said:

"There should be no praying before the prayer of 'Id. As for after it, it is up to you whether you pray or do not pray. That is the verdict of Imaam Abu Haneefah, may Allaah have mercy on him."

In Nur al-Idah (Arabic-English), p269, it is written:

It is disliked to offer voluntary prayer at the prayer-site of Eid prior to the Eid prayer, a position that is agreed upon; and it is disliked at home before the Eid prayer according to the majority of Hanafi scholars. Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) is reported to have said that Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and led the people in the Eid prayer observing no prayer before it or after it. [1]

It is disliked to offer voluntary prayer at the prayer-site after the Eid prayer, this applies only to the prayer-site of Eid, and this is the preferred view according to the majority of the scholars, due to the saying of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleased with him) who reported that Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not offer prayer before the Eid prayer. As he returned to his house, he would perform two rak'ahs. [2]

It is therefore not disliked to perform voluntary prayer at home after the Eid prayer in accordance with the hadith. [3]

69. The Recitation In The 'Id Prayers

236. Imaam Maalik informed us: 'Damrah Ibn Sa'eed al-Maazinee رحمه الله narrated to us from 'Ubdaydullaah Ibn 'Abdillaah Ibn 'Utbah رحمه الله, that Sayyiduna 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه asked Sayyiduna Abu Waaqid al-Laythee رضي الله عنه, 'What would the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم recite in Ad-ha and Fitr?' He said, 'He would recite Qaaf, wal-Qur'aanil-majeed (Soorah 50), and Iqtarabtis-saa'atu wa'nshaqqal-qamar (Soorah 54).'"

70. Saying Allaahu Akbar In The 'Eed Prayer

237. Imaam Maalik رحمه الله informed us: "Naafi' رحمه الله told us, 'I attended Ad-ha and Fitr with Abu Hurayrah [رضي الله عنه, as the Imaam], and he said Allaahu Akbar seven times in the first [rak'ah], before the recitation and five times in the second [rak'ah], before the recitation.'"

Imaam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "The people have differed concerning the saying of Allaahu Akbar in the 'Eedayn. Whatever you choose of that is fine. The best of it, in our opinion, is what has been related from Ibn Mas'ood رضي الله عنه, that he would pronounce Allaahu Akbar in every 'Eed nine times: five and four, including in them the takbeers for beginning the prayer, and on bowing. He would make the two recitations close to each other, placing it last in the first [rak'ah] and first in the second [rak'ah]. That is the verdict of Imaam Abu Haneefah رحمه الله."

71. Standing [For Prayer] In The Month Of Ramadaan

238. Imaam Maalik رحمه الله informed us: "Ibn Shihaab رحمه الله informed us from 'Urwah Ibn az-Zubayr رحمه الله from Ummul Mu'mineen 'Aa'isha رضي الله عنها that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم prayed in the masjid, and some people prayed with him. Then they gathered on the third or fourth night, and grew more, but the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم did not go out to them. When morning came, he said, 'I saw what you did yesterday and nothing prevented me from coming out to you, except that I was afraid it would be made obligatory upon you.' And that was in Ramadaan."

239. Imaam Maalik رحمه الله informed us: "Sa'eed al-Maqburee رحمه الله narrated to us from Abu Salamah Ibn 'Abdur Rahmaan رحمه الله, that he asked Ummul Mu'mineen 'Aa'isha رضي الله عنها, 'How was the prayer of the Messenger of Allaah in Ramadaan?' She said, 'The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم would not pray more than eleven rak'aat, neither in Ramadaan nor any other month. He would pray four - and do not ask about their distinction and length - then he would pray four - and do not ask about their distinction and length - and then he would pray three,' She said, 'So I asked, "Messenger of Allaah, do you sleep before you perform the Witr?" He answered, "'Aa'isha, my eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep."'"
