148. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Naafi' رحمه الله informed us from Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما, that he would pronounce the the tashahhud, saying, 'Bismillah, at-tahiyyatu lillahi wa's-salawatu lillahi wa'z-zakiyatu lillah. As-salamu 'alayka ayyuha'n-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, as-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahi's-saliheen. Shahidtu an la ilaha illallaahu wa shahidtu anna Muhammadan rasoolullah.' - [In the name of Allah, greetings are for Allah and prayers are for Allah and right actions are for Allah. Peace be bpun, O Prophet and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the right-acting slaves of Allah. I have witnessed that there is no god but Allah and I have witnessed that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah].'

He would say this in the first two rak'at and supplicate as he saw fit having finished his tashahhud. When he sat at the end of of his prayer, he would say the tashahhud in the same way, except that he would bring forward saying shahidtu, then when he wanted to conclude he would say, 'As-salamu 'ala'n-nabiyyi wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, as-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahi's-saliheen' [Peace be upon the Prophet and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the right-acting slaves of Allah].' [Then] 'As-salamu 'alaykum' to his right, then he would reply to the [salam of the] Imam; then if anyone said 'as-salamu 'alaykum' to him from his left he would reply to them.'"

Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "The tashahhuds mentioned are all fine, though none are like the tashahhud of 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood رضي الله عنه. We retain his tashahhud because he related it from the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم and [the fuqaha'] in general agree upon it where we are."

Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "Muhill Ibn Muhriz ad-Dabbi رحمه الله informed us from Sahqeeq Ibn Salamah Ibn Wa'il al-Asadi رحمه الله from 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood رضي الله عنه, who said, 'We used, when we prayed behind the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم to say, "Peace be upon Allah" so the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم concluded his prayer one day and then turned to us and said, "Don't say, 'peace be upon Allah' for Allahs is Peace. Rather say, 'At-Tahiyyatu lillahi wa's-salawatu wa't-tayyibat. As-salamu 'alayka ayyuha'n-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, as-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahi's-saliheen. Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallaahu wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasooluh.' [Greetings are for Allah and prayers and good words. Peace be upon you, O Prophet and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the right-acting slaves of Allah. I witness that there is no god but Allah and I witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger.]'"

42. The Sunnah In Prostration

150. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Naafi' رحمه الله informed us from Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما, that when he prostrated, he would place his hands on the same thing on which he placed his foreheard. [Naafi' رحمه الله] said, 'And I saw him in intense cold and he would bring his hands out from under his cloak so that he could place them on the gravel.'"

Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Naafi' رحمه الله informed us from Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما, that he used to say, 'Whoever places his forehead on the ground, let him place his hands [likewise], and then when he raises his forehead let him raise his hands, for the hands should prostrate as the face prostrates.'"

Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "We adhere to this. A man ought, when he places his forehead in prostration, to place his hands next to his ears and gather his fingers towards the qibla and not spread them. Then, when he raises his head, he should raise them [his hands] therewith. As for someone who suffers when it is cold, and so puts his hands on the ground from within his cloak or garment, there is no harm in that; and that is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifa, may Allaah سبحانه و تعالى have mercy on him."

43. Sitting In Prayer

152. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "'Abdullah Ibn Dinar رحمه الله narrated to us from Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما, that a man prayed next to him, and when the man sat, he sat cross-legged [on his buttocks] on the ground and drew his legs together. So when Ibn 'Umar finished he reproached him for that. The man said, 'But you do it.' [Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما] said, 'I have an ailment.'"

Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "'Abdur Rahman Ibn al-Qasim رحمه الله narrated to us from 'Abdullah Ibn 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهم, that he used to see his father sit [with his buttocks] on the ground in the prayer. He said, 'So I did it, and I was then still in my youth. My father reproached me and said, "It is not the Sunnah of the prayer. The Sunnah of the prayer is that you keep your right foot upright and put your left foot on its side."'"

Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said, "We adhere to this and it is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifa, may Allaah have mercy on him. Imam Malik Ibn Anas رحمه الله used to adhere to this in the first two rak'at, but with regard to the fourth rak'ah he used to say, 'A man should rest his buttocks on the ground and put his legs on his right side.'"

Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Sadaqah Ibn Yasar رحمه الله informed us from al-Mughirah Ibn Hakim رحمه الله that he said, 'I saw Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما sitting upon his heels between the two prostrations of the prayer, and I mentioned that to him. He said, "I have only begun to do that since I have been unwell."'"

Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "We adhere to this. One ought not to sit on the heels between the two prostrations, but one ought to sit in between as one sits in the prayer [after the two rak'at and at the end of the prayer]. That is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifa, may Allah have mercy on him."

44. A Man's Praying Sitting Down

155. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "az-Zuhri رحمه الله narrated to us from as-Sa'ib Ibn Yazeed رحمه الله from al-Muttalib Ibn Abi Wada'ah as-Sahmi رحمه الله from Ummul Mu'mineen Hafsah رضي الله عنها, the wife of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. She said, 'I never saw the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم praying his voluntary prayers sitting down, until a year before his death, when he would pray his voluntary prayer sitting down. He would read a surah and would utter it slowly and clearly until it seemed to be greater in length than one longer than it.'"

Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Isma'eel Ibn Muhammad Ibn Sa'd Ibn Abi Waqqas رضي الله عنهم narrated to us from a mawla of 'Abdullah Ibn 'Amr Ibn al-'Aas رضي الله عنهما from 'Abdullah Ibn 'Amr رضي الله عنهما, that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, 'The prayer of one of you, sitting, is equal to half his prayer standing.'"

157. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Az-Zuhri رحمه الله narrated to us that 'Abdullah Ibn 'Amr رضي الله عنهما said, 'When we came to al-Madinah we were afflicted by an intense fit of fever. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم came out to people when they were praying their voluntary prayers sitting, and he صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "The reward for praying sitting is half that for prayer standing."'"
