169. Muḥammad said, “Abū Ḥanīfah informed us from Ḥammād that he asked Ibrāhīm about a sick man who fainted and thus missed the prayer, and he said, ‘If it is only for a single day, I prefer that he make up the prayers, but if it is more than that, he is excused inshā’Allāh, exalted is He.’”
Muḥammad said, “If he faints for a day and a night, he makes up the prayers, but if it is for more than that he does not have to make them up, and that is the verdict of Abū Ḥanīfah.”
170. Muḥammad said, “Abū Ḥanīfah informed us from Ḥammād from Ibrāhīm that Ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنه said about someone who is in a faint for a day and a night, ‘He should make up his prayers.’”
Muḥammad said, “We adhere to this, until he is unconscious for more than that, and that is the verdict of Abū Ḥanīfah.”
171. Muḥammad said, “Abū Ḥanīfah informed us from Ḥammād from Ibrāhīm concerning a man who is in some doubt about the first prostration or the tashahhud or something like that of his prayer, as long as it is not a complete rakʿah, ‘He must make up what of that he has doubt about and also prostrate two prostrations for his forgetfulness, because they put right what forgetfulness there was before them, by the permission of Allah, and it used to be said, “They abase shayṭān.”’ He also said, ‘That I should prostrate two prostrations for forgetfulness, for that reason, for something I didn’t have to prostrate for, is preferable to me than leaving them out.’”
Muḥammad said, “We adhere to this, but if someone is bothered with that a great deal, then he should act according to what he thinks most probable and then prostrate the two prostrations of forgetfulness, and that is the verdict of Abū Ḥanīfah.”
172. Muḥammad said, “Abū Ḥanīfah informed us from Ḥammād that Ibrāhīm said concerning someone who forgets an obligatory
[part of the prayer] so that he does not know [for example] whether he has prayed four or three rakʿahs, ‘If this is the first of his
forgetfulness then he should repeat the prayer, but if he forgets a great deal he should endeavour to find out what is correct. If he thinks it most probable that he had completed the prayer, then he should do two prostrations of forgetfulness. But if he thinks it most probable that he had prayed three rakʿahs, he should add a fourth to them and then do the two prostrations of forgetfulness.’”
Muḥammad said, “We adhere to this and it is the verdict of Abū Ḥanīfah.”
173. Muḥammad said, “Abū Ḥanīfah informed us from Ḥammād from Ibrāhīm that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه used to beat men if he saw them doing repeated prostrations for some other reason than forgetfulness.”
Muḥammad said, “A man ought not to prostrate in any one rakʿah more than twice unless it be out of forgetfulness such that he does not know if he has prostrated one or two prostrations, in which case he should proceed on the basis of what he thinks most probable. All of this is the verdict of Abū Ḥanīfah.”
174. Muḥammad said, “Abū Ḥanīfah informed us from Ḥammād from Shaqīq ibn Salamah that ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd رضي الله عنه said, ‘If any of you are in doubt in the prayer as to whether he has prayed three or four rakʿahs, then let him try to find out what is correct, and let him take into consideration what he considers most probable. If he thinks it most probable that it was three, let him stand and add a fourth to them, then say the tashahhud and the salām and prostrate two prostrations of forgetfulness. If he thinks it most probable that he had prayed four, he should say the tashahhud and the salām and then prostrate two prostrations of forgetfulness.’”
Muḥammad said, “We adhere to this, except that we prefer that he repeat the prayer if this is the first of what occurs to him.”
This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
