200. Muḥammad said, “Abū Ḥanīfah informed us from Ḥammād from Ibrāhīm from ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd that a man asked him about the khuṭbah on the day of Jumuʿah, and he said, ‘Don’t you read Sūrat al-Jumuʿah?’ He said, ‘Yes, of course, but I do not know how it is.’ He said, ‘“But when they see a chance of trade or entertainment they scatter off to it and leave you standing there,” (Sūrat al-Jumuʿah: 11) so the khuṭbah is done standing on the day of Jumuʿah.’”
Muḥammad said, “We adhere to this, except that there are two khuṭbahs in between which there is a short sitting, and that is the verdict of Abū Ḥanīfah, may Allah, exalted is He, have mercy on him.”
201. Muḥammad said, “Abū Ḥanīfah informed us saying, ‘Ḥammād narrated to us saying, “I asked Ibrāhīm about a man who goes out to the place of prayer (muṣallā) and finds that the imam has already prayed, ‘Should he pray by himself?’ He said, ‘He doesn’t have to pray, but if he wishes he may pray.’ I said, ‘If he doesn’t go out to the place of prayer, should he pray in his house in the same way as the imam does it?’ He said, ‘No.’”’”
Muḥammad said, “We adhere to this. The ʿĪd is only with the imam, so if you miss it with the imam, then there is no prayer [to be done], and that is the verdict of Abū Ḥanīfah.”
202. Muḥammad said, “Abū Ḥanīfah informed us from Ḥammād from Ibrāhīm that ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd was seated in the mosque of Kufa, and along with him were Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān and Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī . Al-Walīd ibn ʿUqbah ibn Abī Muʿayṭ came up to them, and he was the amir of Kufa at that time.
He said, ‘Tomorrow is your ʿĪd, so what should I do?’ The two of them said, ‘Abū ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān, tell him what he should do.’ So ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd told him to pray without the call to prayer or the iqāmah, and to say the takbīr five times in the first [rakʿah] and four times in the second and to do the two recitations consecutively, and to deliver the khuṭbah on his mount after the prayer.”
Muḥammad said, “We adhere to this, but there is no harm if he does the khuṭbah standing even if he is not on his mount. That is the verdict of Abū Ḥanīfah, may Allah, exalted is He, have mercy on him.”
203. Muḥammad said, “Abū Ḥanīfah informed us from Ḥammād that Ibrāhīm said, ‘The prayer on the two ʿĪds is always done before the khuṭbah. Then the imam pauses on his mount after the prayer. He supplicates [gives the khuṭbah] and prays, without a call to prayer or iqāmah.’”
58. WOMEN GOING OUT TO ATTEND THE TWO ʿĪDS, AND SIGHTING THE NEW MOON
204. Muḥammad said, “Abū Ḥanīfah informed us from ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Abī’l-Mukhāriq that Umm ʿAṭiyyah said, ‘Women used to be granted as a concession to go out to attend the two ʿĪds: al-Fiṭr and al-Aḍḥā.’”
Muḥammad said, “Their going out to attend the ʿĪd does not please us, except for old women beyond child-bearing age. That is the verdict of Abū Ḥanīfah, may Allah, exalted is He, have mercy on him.”
205. Muḥammad said, “Abū Ḥanīfah informed us from Ḥammād from Ibrāhīm concerning people who testified that they had seen the new moon of Shawwāl. Ḥammād said, ‘I asked Ibrāhīm about that and he said, “If they come in the morning, then they should break the fast and go out [to the place of prayer], but if they come in the evening, they should not go out [to the place of prayer] nor should they break the fast until the next day.”’”
Muḥammad said, “We adhere to this except in one respect: they break the fast and go out [to the place of prayer] the day after if they come [as witnesses] in the evening, and that is the verdict of Abū Ḥanīfah, may Allah, exalted is He, have mercy on him.”
