Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

"The objective is for these books, which contain lies and innovations, to be annihilated and destroyed. Destroying these books takes greater precedence than destroying musical instruments and alcoholic containers, since their harm is much greater than the harm caused by these (latter) things. And there is no insurance to be paid for their loss, just as there is no insurance to be paid for breaking the vessels in which alcohol is drunk out of."

al-Kankoohee رحمه الله said,

"The scholars should not accept anything from a person of innovation, nor should they leave the common folk to ask about him or sit with him. So if this is how it is, then no one will speak about him, mention of him will die out and his call will not prevail. So it is understood from this that it is permissible, rather, obligatory for the scholars to expose the innovators faults to the people and to prevent them from taking (knowledge) from them."

Imam Al-Ḥasan ibn ʻAlī al-Barbahārī رحمه الله said,

"If you see a man sitting with one of the people of innovation, warn and inform him. If he sits with him after knowledge, beware of him, for he is a person of desires." [1] [2]

Notes:

[1] Abu Daawood as-Sijistaanee رحمه الله said: "I said to Abu 'Abdillaah Ahmad Ibn Hanbal رحمه الله, 'If I see a man from Ahlus Sunnah sitting with a man from the people of innovation, should I abandon speaking to him?' He said, "No, you should first inform him that the one whom you saw him with is a person of innovation. Either he will cease speaking to him, so then continue speaking with him, or if not, then regard him to be like him. Ibn Mas'ood رضي الله عنه said: "A person is like his friend."'" (Reported by Ibn Abee Ya'laa رحمه الله in Tabaqaatul Hanaabilah, 1/60 with a Saheeh isnaad, and by Ibn Muflih رحمه الله in al-Aadaabush-Shar'iyyah, 1/263)

Ibn 'Awn رحمه الله said, "Whoever sits with the people of innovation is worse than them." (Reported by Ibn Battah رحمه الله in al-Ibaanah al-Kubra, no.486)

'Alee Ibn Abee Khaalid رحمه الله said: "I said to رحمه الله Ahmad, 'This old man - referring to an old man who was present with us and was a neighbour of mine - I have warned him against a person, but he would like to hear your saying about him. Haarith al-Qaseer (meaning - Haarith al-Muhaasibee) and you saw me with him many years ago and said to me, "Do not sit with him and do not speak to him." I have not spoken to him from then until now, but this old man sits with him. What do you say about him (i.e. the innovator)?'

I saw that Ahmad رحمه الله became red, his veins and his eyes swelled. I have never seen him like that before. Then he shuddered and said, 'That is the one to whom Allaah has done such-and-such. No one knows that except the one who is fully acquainted with him. Alas! Alas! Alas! He is not one known except to one fully acquainted with him. He was the one to whom al-Maghaazilee sat with and Ya'qoob and so and so. He lead them to having the views of Jahm. They were destroyed through him.'

So, the old man said, 'O Abaa 'Abdillaah! He narrates hadeeth, displays dignity and fearfulness. He is such and such.'

Abu 'Abdillaah رحمه الله became angry and said, 'Do not be fooled by his fearfulness, nor by his gentleness. Do not be fooled by how he droops his head. He is an evil person. This will not be known except by one well-aquainted with him. Do not sit with him, for there is no honour for him. Will you sit with everyone who narrates the ahaadeeth of the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم and is an innovator?!'" (Reported by Ibn Abee Ya'laa رحمه الله in Tabaqaatul Hanaabilah 1/233-234, and in the biography of 'Alee Ibn Abee Khaalid).

al-Fudayl Ibn 'Iyaad رحمه الله said,

"If Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, knows that a man hates a person of innovation, He will forgive him even if his actions are few. [1] A person of the Sunnah would not help an innovator except due to hypocricy. [2] Whoever turns his face away from an innovator, Allaah سبحانه و تعالى will fill his heart with faith. Whoever frightens an innovator away, Allaah سبحانه و تعالى will grant him safety on the Day of Great Terror. And whoever debases an innovator, Allaah سبحانه و تعالى will raise him in Paradise by a hundred ranks. So, for Allaah, never shelter an innovator."

Notes:

[1] This part is reported by Abu Nu'aym in al-Hilyah (8/103) with a saheeh isnaad and his version ends, "...then I hope that he will be forgiven."

[2] Its like is reported by Abu Nu'aym in al-Hilyah (8/104) with a saheeh isnaad. It is reported as worded here by Ibn Battah (no. 429) with an acceptable isnaad.

Imam Al-Ḥasan ibn ʻAlī al-Barbahārī رحمه الله said,

"If anything of innovation appears in a person, beware of him, since what is hidden from you is more than what is apparent.

However, if you see a person whose matter and opinion is despicable, he is wicked, sinful and oppressive, yet he is a person of the Sunnah, accompany him and sit with him, since his sin will not harm you." [1] [2]

Note

[1] The author is explaining the seriousness and danger of innovated beliefs and sitting with and listening to the people who hold these beliefs, and that this is more dangerous than sitting with even the people of sin. This does not mean that there is no harm in sitting with sinners, rather, it is to be feared that one who sits with them will have the sins they commit made alluring to him by Shaytaan, until he regards the sins as lawful and is destroyed, since one who declares forbidden acts to be lawful has left Islaam. Rather, he should only sit with them if his intention is to call them to repent and give them da'wah, provided he thinks that he will not be affected by them. Plz tell me this hadis's shaan e wurood. I think it's related to helping each other?

Narratted by Hazrat Jareer Bin Abdullah رضي الله عنه that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: ..He who introduced some good practice in Islam which was followed after him (by people) he would be assured of reward like one who followed it, without their rewards being diminished in any respect. And he who introduced some evil practice in Islam which had been followed subsequently (by others), he would be required to bear the burden like that of one who followed this (evil practice) without their's being diminished in any respect.

Lexical Definition Of The Word Sunnah

Lane gives the lexical definition of the word "sunnah" سنة (whose plural is sunan - سنن) as, "A way, course, rule or manner, of acting or conduct of life or the like... whether good or bad; approved or disapproved... a way that has been instituted or pursued by those after them." [E. W. Lane, Arbaic-English Lexicon (Cambridge, England: Islamic Texts Society, 1984), vol. 1, p. 1438]

As lane noted, a conduct of life may be a praiseworthy way or life or a blameworthy way of life. Lexically, the word "sunnah" could be used for either one. However, in parlance it is usually used for a praiseworthy way of life; in fact, when used in a negative sense, that is customarily made explicit by the context or an additional adjective.

It is not surprising to find this lexical usage of the word in the Prophet's own speech صلى الله عليه وسلم. In fact, in the following hadeeth, the word "sunnah" is used in this sense:

On the authority of Sayyiduna Jaabir Ibn 'Abdillaah رضي الله عنهما who said, "A group of bedouins came to the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم wearing woolen clothing. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم noticed their harsh situation and that they had been afflicted with need. He then exhorted the people to give charity but they were slow in doing so, until they saw signs of anger on his face. Then a man from the Ansaar came with a container of silver. Then another came. These were followed by others until the signsof happiness could be seen on the face of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم then said, 'Whoever introduces a good practise (sunnatan hasanah) in Islaam that is acted upon after him shall have written for him a reward similar to the one who acted upon it without the reward of either of them being lessened in any way. And whoever introduces an evil practise (sunnatan sayyi'a) into Islaam that is acted upon after him shall have the burden of the ones who acted upon it recorded for him without the burden of either of them being reduced in any way.'" (Recorded by Muslim)

Note that this particular hadeeth could be understood to imply that there is such a thing as "good innovations." From the Sharee'ah point of view, all innovations and herisies are definitely acts taking one away from the straight path. The action that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was referring to in this particular hadeeth is an action sanctioned by the Sharee'ah and followed by others - (in this case,) the action of giving charity. This deed is not considered an innovation because it is directly based on explicit evidences of the Qur'an and Sunnah.[The Authority and Importance of the Sunnah]
