Nope, not always. You can just use one of them. But I prefer handwriting because it's more detailed than physiognomy. It's just in handwriting you have to really know which aspects are mood-affected and which ones are not.

Its indeed amazing how external environments leave deep effects on someone's Physical.. Mental and Spiritual states.. the tenets of Homeopathy are infact routed in knowing the person rather than the diseaae..
physiognomy.. along with body language can speak a lot about someone..

I had an interesting discussion with a detective once.. said merely someone's walk could give many details..

or he was their foreteller. Call the man to me." When the man was called to him, he told him of his thought.
The man said, "I have never seen such a day on which a Muslim is faced with such an accusation."
'Umar said, "I am determined that you should tell me the truth."
He said, "I was a foreteller in the pre-lslamic period of ignorance."
Then 'Umar said, "Tell me the most astonishing thing your female Jinn has told you of."
He said, "One-day while I was in the market, she came to me scared and said,
'Haven't you seen the Jinns and their despair and they were overthrown after their defeat (and prevented from listening to the news of the heaven) so that they (stopped going to the sky and) kept following camel-riders (i.e. 'Arabs)?" 'Umar said, "He is right." and added, "One day while I was near their idols, there came a man with a calf and slaughtered it as a sacrifice (for the idols). An (unseen) creature shouted at him, and I have never heard harsher than his voice. He was crying, 'O you bold evil-doer! A matter of success! An eloquent man is saying: None has the right to be worshipped except you (O Allah).' On that the people fled, but I said, 'I shall not go away till I know what is behind this.' Then the cry came again: 'O you bold evil-doer! A matter of success! An eloquent man is saying: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah.' I then went away and a few days later it was said, "A prophet has appeared."
(Sahih bukhari, Book #58, Hadith #206)

The first part of the hadith clearly shows Umar رضي الله عنه's skill. Some more such incidents were mentioned in a lecture by the Salafi shaykh Anwar al Awlaki.

^^ Whoa, jazakallah khair akhi :O. I've heard this hadith but not in such a detail. Actually s/he's not the only people who accused me kufr of doing character reading like that. One even accused me doing sihr/magic because I read his characters from handwriting accurately lol!!! xD I was like, "so sihr is taught in seminar now, with psychologist as one of its keynote speaker? because that's where I learned my skill from!"

istikhara dreams are a lot easier to interpret than any other dream because you've known what the background problem the dreamer has, that's reflected in his dream (if the dream is related to istikhara). hence, all the dream symbols or archetypes are still related to the dreamer's current problem that's being asked in istikhara.

real-life example, a man is asking in his istikhara about the state of his current marriage. he saw a dream of being in a house, but suddenly the wall turned into glass and the floor shatters. the house represents his marriage, the glass wall represents pretension, and the shattering floor represents his marriage foundation is in ruin. arrange the puzzle and you get an interpretation that this man is not being open enough to his spouse and such attitude ruins his marriage.
