AMU Under Attack

First there was a modernist, most probably a Shia, journalist who wrote an article in the Times of India asserting that AMU does not allow its girls to access its library.

Now it is VishwaHindu Parishad (World Hindu Council), an organization inspired by dreaded RSS, who wants to celebrate the anniversary of a small time Hindu Maharaja on AMU grounds. Why? Because he had donated a little bit of land to our university.

***

Last couple of centuries have been extremely tough for the Muslims of India.

(1) Defeat of Nawab Sirajuddaula on Mir Ja'afer's betrayal in 1757.
(2) Martyrdom of Tipu Sultan around the end of eighteen cebtury.
(3) Defeat of Balakot Tehreek and martyrdom of a large number of Mujahideen in the beginning of 19th century.
(4) Events of 1857.
(5) Abolition of Caliphate in Turkey in which Indian Muslims were taking very keen interest.
(6) Partition of India leading to trifurcation of Muslim population.

In independent India Muslims have been living in a seize mentality as if they were responsible for the partition. They reside in India with a guilty conscience. Hence they are not asserting their legitimate rights. If you do not assert your rights then others encroach upon them. For last 67 years the most potent encroacher is RSS through its various affiliate organizations. Their focus is on various points.

(1) Building of a Ram temple after demolition of Babri Mosque.
(2) To destroy Urdu.
(3) Article 370 regarding Kashmir
(4) Uniform Civil Code
(5) Aligarh Muslim University.

The Profound, the Deep and the Sophisticated

Allow me to say it again.

There is place for profundity in Islam.
There is place of deep things in Islam.
There is place for sophisticated things in Islam.

But none of them is essential.

Reason is simple. Even simple people need Maghfirah in the hereafter.
It will be gross injustice to require profundity while creating simple minded people.
The very fact that simple minded people exist in this world implies that profundity on our part is not a necessity.
God Almighty is just.

So even intelligent and capable people can ignore the profound, the deep and the sophisticated issues.
In particular hair splitting theologians can be avoided without much fear of loss.

"By the time, all men are in loss. Except those who believe, do good deeds, exhort to truth and are patient."

No, profundity, depth and sophistication is not essential.

You are the last Godly message

Someone kindly halalify the poem of Allama Iqbal.

(After listening to the poem I realize that the effect during the actual recitation was absolutely different!)

Ashna Apni Haqiqat Se Ho Ae Dehqan Zara
Dana Tu, Khaiti Bhi Tu, Baran Bhi Tu, Hasil Bhi Tu

Become somewhat acquainted with your own reality O farmer!
The grain, the cultivation, the rain, as well as the produce you are

Aah, Kis Ki Justujoo Aawara Rakhti Hai Tujhe
Rah Tu, Rahru Bhi Tu, Rahbar Bhi Tu, Manzil Bhi Tu

Ah! Whose search keeps you aimlessly wandering
The path, the traveler, the guide, as well as the destination you are

Kanpta Hai Dil Tera Andesha-e-Toofan Se Kya
Na-Khuda Tu, Beher Tu, Kashti Bhi Tu, Sahil Bhi Tu

Why is your heart trembling with the fear of the storm?
The sailor, the ocean, the boat, as well as the sea‐shore you are

Dekh Aa Kar Kaucha-e-Chaak-e-Greban Mein Kabhi
Qais Tu, Laila Bhi Tu, Sehra Bhi Tu, Mehmil Bhi Tu

Come and look some time in the lane of the torn collars
Qais, Lailah, the wilderness as well as the litter on the camel you are

Waye Nadani Ke Tu Mouhtaj-e-Saqi Ho Gya
Mai Bhi Tu, Meena Bhi Tu, Saqi Bhi Tu, Mehfil Bhi Tu

Woe foolishness! You are in need of the cup-bearer
The wine, the decanter, the cup‐bearer, as well as the assembly you are

Shaola Ban Kar Phoonk De Khashak-e-Ghair Allah Ko
Khof-e-Batil Kya Ke Hai Gharatgar-e-Batil Bhi Tu

Becoming a flame burn down the rubbish of Godlessness
Why are you afraid of the falsehood? The destroyer of falsehood also you are

Be-Khabar! Tu Jouhar-e-Aaeena-e-Ayyam Hai
Tu Zamane Mein Khuda Ka Akhri Pegham Hai

O imprudent one! You are the essence of time’s mirror
The ultimate message of God in the world you are!

Part of the poem: Shama Aur Shayar

Babri: Institutional failure

Iftikhar Gilani

In his recently released book “Destruction of the Babri Masjid: A National Dishonour”, author and legal luminary AG Noorani traces the conspiracy and discusses how the civil and criminal cases concerning the title to the Babri Masjid and accountability for its destruction on December 6, 1992, have all but run their course. He also blames the secular Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) governments in Uttar Pradesh for showing little stamina and proving to be impediments in the way of pursuing cases against the accused. Speaking to Iftikhar Gilani in an exclusive interview, he says that then PV Narasimha Rao was culpable because he knew what was happening and yet did not do anything about it. He also observed that the Babri Majid issue should not have been a Muslim issue and that the Babri Masjid Action Committee had committed mistakes. Excerpts from the interview:

You said the role of Congress has been treacherous. Can you explain?

Muslims have earned a bad name in the Shah Bano case. The truth is Indira Gandhi had arrived at a pact with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). To please the Muslims, Rajiv Gandhi passed the Muslim Women Bill, which led to the opening of locks. But they were opened through a prior agreement. The VHP stopped the agitation because of the assassination of Indira Gandhi. The pact was renewed by Rajiv Gandhi. Muslims got a bad name needlessly. I had conveyed a message to the Rajiv Gandhi government through an emissary. I had said open the definition of divorce according to sharia laws, which would have meant three periods and conciliation, not Anglo-Mohammadan law. Had that been done, all sting would have been taken out. But then Rajiv Gandhi had a deal behind him.

The demolition of Babri Masjid was a watershed in Indian history. How has it impacted Indian polity?

Yes, it was a watershed moment. It propelled LK Advani into a position of leadership and it seemed he would become the Prime Minister. The BJP fouled the atmosphere. But such was the backlash that the Congress could not return to power in 1996. If it had not been for the mistakes on the part of Congress leadership, the BJP would not have come to power in 1998. The entire country was shocked and disgusted by the demolition. President Shankar Dayal Sharma had issued a strong statement. So the BJP didn’t gain from it. But it did help spread the message of Hindutva and that caught on. The BJP reaped the harvest. It did not last long as could be seen in the election results of 2004 and 2009.

Do you mean to say that the message of Hindutva has lost its relevance and it did not capture the Hindu imagination?

The point is they needed a person like Narendra Modi to carry things further. If it had not been for the UPA’s mistakes, the BJP would not have come to power. I want to emphasise there were considerable mistakes on the part of the Muslim leadership. The Babri Masjid Action Committee’s stupid call of boycott of all official functions of Republic Day was bound to have a negative impact.

This is your third volume on Babri Masjid encompassing recent history. Can you give us a glimpse of what you have recorded in this volume?

The evidence in this book nails Narasimha Rao, shows his culpability. He was the man who knew what was happening and he kept his eyes shut. Rao was the prime culprit and he acted in such a way that he would not be blamed. But he was responsible. From the record which I had laid hands on, it is very clear that he was communal-minded. He had a record of communal-mindedness when he was the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He had a bad record during the struggle against the Nizam in Hyderabad. At one time, Advani also praised him, called him fantastic. I must mention also that it required a chief justice like Justice Venkatachaliah to make the demolition possible. I have documented that Venkatachaliah facilitated demolition by giving those court adjournments and after the demolition, Attorney General Milon Banerjee reminded him, “I had warned your lordship.” Venkatachaliah went so far as to say, “I hope you are looking after the health of the kar sevaks.” And sure enough, because of this he was appointed chairman of the Constitution Review Committee by the BJP government.

From the contents of the book, it appears you are arguing that the Judiciary and the Executive virtually colluded. And even the secular SP and BSP governments riding on Muslim votes also didn’t show the stamina to pursue cases against the accused?

Yes, they had virtually colluded. I wouldn’t go into technicalities. The court was set up by the UP government without the requisite notification, and without the consent of the high court. They had only to issue a notification and the trial would have proceeded. And the CBI had also played a deceitful role. When Advani was in power, they had one role, and when he was not in power, they played a different game.

You have been a strong defender of secular ideals and values. The demolition of Babri Masjid harmed secularism the most. What is the future of this ideology in the country?

The fabric of secularism has been impaired. The fact of the matter is Narendra Modi has won votes and popularity because of his record. We have to face realities. Every day reports show RSS is infiltrating institutions with the encouragement of the current government. It is a fearful situation. The worst thing today is the communal polarisation.

You have also said Babri Masjid should not have been allowed to be made a Muslim issue alone.

That is right. It was an issue of statute and law. On this basis, we should have demanded that possession should be restored.

The Allahabad high court judgment had almost sanctified that it was a place of birth of Lord Ram. How do you view this judgment?

The ball is now in the Supreme Court. And on past performance, really, we can’t say, when the case will be heard. By the way, the Allahabad high court judgment has been referred to a larger bench. Elections have come and gone, but the Supreme Court has not found time to decide the issue of Hindutva before it. The judgment was delivered by Justice JS Verma interpreting Hindutva (as often quoted by BJP) without taking recourse to Veer Savarkar’s book. He referred to Maulana Wahiduddin Khan’s book and some stray observations to validate his case.

Back to the high court judgment, according to it, Hindu faith triumphs over the law of the land. The law of the land involves law of limitation. They said limitation cannot run against a Hindu temple. But a Hindu temple can acquire right to property by adverse possession. Now it need not be an established deity, it can be a leaf, a stone and if it is a matter of faith, that faith must be respected. The implications are so far reaching, I need not to spell them out.

In Mumbai, there is a traffic island. In that there is a mosque, a temple and a church. And they exist peacefully. Before the idols were planted, there was a proposal to build a temple within the complex, but outside the mosque. It was actually at the chabutra that the worship was conducted. If that solution had been pursued by Rajiv Gandhi, the problem would have been over. The gates were opened by KM Pandey, the judge, who said he saw monkeys on the roof of his house and he was inspired.

Historians have recorded Muslim rulers having demolished temples in the past and many Hindus feel that the demolition of Babri Masjid is justified.

The majority judgment of the two Hindu judges of the high court recalled the cases of those demolitions by Muslim rulers as if that sanctifies demolitions now. Romila Thapar has documented extremely well how Buddhist places of worship were demolished by Hindus and vice versa. A Hindu Kashmiri King Harshdev looted temples to fill his coffers. But the question is: Are you going to open history to take revenge. Then there would be no end to it.

You have mentioned the accountability of demolition has not been fixed and political parties in UP have colluded.

Neither Samajwadi Party nor Bahujan Samaj Party has taken a stand on Babri Masjid. Muslims should realise who their friends are.

How do you rate writing of history in this country?

I must say there is a band of historians Sushil Srivastava and Romila Thapar and many others who are good. At the same time there is a group of historians which is propagandist. I have mentioned it without showing why. But it is remarkable these judgments of the high court running into hundreds of pages were produced at short notice. A propagandist produced material to these judges and they relied on that.

Modern Slavery

One stick that the west beats Islam and Muslims with is slavery.

It is obvious that Islam tolerated slavery.
We were not the people who abolished slavery from the world.

More nagging point is that it was the west, namely the US, who explicitly forbade it.
Rightly or wrongly, this sinner feels that it is always a good practice to begin by acknowledging the stark reality.

So west, thank you for doing this wonderful service to humanity.
Thank you for abolishing slavery.
These are my unreserved sentiments of gratitude.

Now can we come to another piece of reality.
Dear west you have been indulging in modern slavery all these years - since world order came under your control.
Initially you practices unashamed slavery upon non-western people.
Aparthied in South Africa was slavery.
It was present till yesterday.
And then there is Israel.
Zionism is slavery.
And it is present today.
And it is present because of you.

And then there is wider modern slavery.
You do not look kindly at any value that is not western.
For example you do not tolerate at all if we Muslims want to implement Islam in our life.
You become red faced at the mention of Shariah.
You are dead bent upon not allowing Shariah in real life - even if it is in the lives of Muslims.

Above quotation has a poem with translation from Allama Iqbal.

Allama Iqbal was one of the most inspiring personalities in the history of Islam and Muslims.

You may not find complete Islam in his life but when you look at overall gist of his life then you find nothing but Islam there.

But for an untrained eye some explanation of Iqbal's view is needed.

Iqbal began his life as an idealist.
He remained an idealist througout his life - but with a qualification.
He was an idealist of Islam.

His intial idealism creates many problems about standing as a Muslim.
He called Hindu demigod Ram as Imam-ul-Hind - leader of India.
He talked about Shivala - Shiva Temple.
He was fascinated by many figures of Hindu history.
Took pleasure in his Hindu lineage.

But this is also a reality that slowly he dropped those things that interfere with Islam.
He adopted nationalism initially and wrote a national song for India that is used till today in India with extreme effectiveness.
But then he also wrote the song of the Ummah - Tarana-e-Milli.

Some aspects of his earlier phase of revolutionary ideology are apparent in above piece of poem.

When looked with a proper perspective this poem is a strange enunciation of Unity of God - Tauheed.

Muslims Tricked in Agra

Some poor Muslims in Agra were called by RSS zealots. The promise was that their ration cards and another card will be made. But they are asked to sit for a pooja - Hindu worship ritual. And then the news went that scores of Muslims from Agra converted back to Hinduism.

Who Failed?

Last year or so some made a remark that people associated with Babri Masjid Action Committee and other such organizations failed to protect the mosque.

This was true but it was strange too.

Can you hurl the accusation of ineffectiveness on people like Muslims of India who have little presence in Indian police, effectively no presence in Indian army and the paramilitary forces and who are politically neutralized and whose economic power has been reduced completely?

But that is what was done in above news report.

One member in Babri case was late Javed Habib.
When a professor from Aligarh raised the same question before him Javed Habib simply cried.

Now Muslim population in India is not miniscule.
And it is indeed a shame that they can not take care of themselves.
Even if they are effectively neutralized by the vagaries of democracy.

But there is a much bigger failure in India that one should worry about.
It is the failure of the sane elements in Indian polity.
They are the one who have failed in protecting the interests of Muslims of India.

Gandhis, Nehrus, Indiras, Shashris, Charan Singhs, Rajivs, VP Singhs, Chandrashekhars and Manmohan Singhs are the people who failed Indian Muslims.

You do not blame the victims for failing to protect themselves.

Burning Piece of Coal in Your Palm

Beloved Prophet (PBUH) reminded beloved Companions (RA) that there will come a time when having faith will be like holding a burning piece of coal in your palm.

Today we live in those times.

****

PS: There might be a rather strong reaction in some hearts to above type of posts.

"Brother we do not come here to be told about problems but to get solutions", might go the cry.

And that is a very normal reaction.

But we are still left without a solution.

Well this life is a test and if it unfolds like a test then that too should be taken as normal.
Use any trick in your bag, told by beloved Prophet (PBUH), to get along.
In particular never forget Allah (SWT) in times of peace and well being.
If you remember Him in times of well being then He (SWT) will grant you well being in times of trial.

Peshawar Insanity

One of the observations that was difficult to miss in SF days was that any discussion involving TTP was difficult to make sense of.
Every thread on that topic heated up rather quickly and thus got locked. However oblique the reference was the thread was always volatile.

This sinner could never make an accurate assessment of that topic.
It was so frustrating.

Now one understands it a little bit.
The situation there is really volatile.
Indeed even those brothers who were talking about it were not completely grasping the things unfolding.
To have a perspective one has to have certain amount of detachment.
Even if the brothers were innocent bystanders.
That is what they were. The very fact that they were witnessing the unfolding of a drama made them partial.
A sign of critical times.
And now the whole world knows the gravity of the situation.
Indian Parliament is completely into the hands of a dispensation that is completely against Islam and Muslims and hence Pakistan.
But even then the Parliament observed condolence on Peshawar carnage.
That should tell us something about the gravity of the situation.
Even detractors of Islam and Muslims are realizing the self annihilation.
Stop it right now.
Purge the scum that has insatiable appetite for blood and gore.

People who long for blood and gore have infilterated the ranks of Muslims.

Their Scholars

When this sinner tried to reason with a young brother on SF that targetting civilians is not approved by Ulama then he said that they, he meant the Mujahideen, have their own scholars - Ulama.

It is true. they have their own Ulama.
And I am afraid they do not convince me.

I can understand when I am targetted because I am a Muslim. My reward is with Allah.
But can I be held responsible for the actions of my elected representatives or the Army or Police of my country?
Or the criminals in my community?
That is against logic, reason, rationality and Shariah injunctions.
I am responsible only for my own actions.
Everybody is responsible for their own actions.

In summary children in Army Public School were not responsible for droning in North Waziristan.
TTP should understand that and so should their Ulama.
We are not Banu Quraiza and should not be treated like that.
I mean the families whose children were studying in Army Public school of Peshawar were not from Banu Quraiza by any stretch of imagination and should not be treated as such.

As such detractors of Islam and Muslims are encroaching upon our social, cultural, economic, political, industrial, military and business space and events like Belan and Peshawar only give them an ideological weapon to justify their actions. Kindly do not feed the enemies of Islam and Muslims.

Dear TTP you are disconnected from reality and therefore the most Shariah compliant action for you will be to take a step back and think about the repercusions of your actions.
