Please provide proof please that making niyyah on New Years or around that time is unislamic, as you clearly said it is unislamic. I could say living in kuffar lands is also unislamic ? I could say paying taxes to her non majesty's govt is also unislamic ? The list goes on, However lets leave that as it will derail the thread which you and a few brothers have already done.

Akhii my point is there is no harm in making niyyah, whether it be on Christmas/Eid, it's your niyyah and that's between you and Allah. Around new years many make intentions, why not channel those intentions towards religion ? Towards good and preventing evil , any harm in that ?

Brother, I understand your point, just that to make niyyah and new years resolution isn't exactly the same.

Terminology makes a huge difference in the Deen. Similar to Islamic banking. Interest is HARAM, but when rephrased with correct understanding, the ulamah seem to allow it, allahu alum.

Please carry on, I was simply putting my views forward. (unqualified views)

I personally would refrain from making New Year anything and if you have to then make your intentions on the 5th of January or 13th of February etc to avoid but I am also giving unqualified views :)

To encourage others, some of us chose to announce our niyyahs on the 27th of Safar, 1435 - An odd day from the Hijri calendar (as well as Gregorian) alhamdulillah (that is for those suggesting odd dates from the Gregorian calendar that bleed past the 1st of January...)

Quote:
Around new years many make intentions, why not channel those intentions towards religion?

One person I know didn't really celebrate new years last night but still made a 2014 (Gregorian) new year's resolution to start praying all of their qadha namaaz, regularly, daily, until they are completed. May Allah Ta'aala accept their intentions, grant them the ability to achieve their goals and accept it from them. Ameen.

Others I know who are either non-practicing or are just learning the deen celebrated new years by sending out du'aas. May Allah Ta'aala accept their pious good du'aas, ameen.

There are readers from all over the world at different stages in their learning and practicing so lets not deter everyone with such a wide sweeping brush unless it is clearly wrong to "channel those intentions towards the deen."

Finally, keep making resolutions people! As some have pointed out, this isn't a one time or once a year thing... we check our niyyah often insha'Allah, alhamdulillah.

There is no hard and firm Fatwa against this so I (personally) can't impose anything on anyone, its just a personal preferrence and you are right that people are in different stages of their journey towards Allah (SWT) so if at her stage this helps her get closer to Allah (SWT) then so be it but at a later stage Insha'Allah down the road she may discover that this is not the "best"course of action.

Insha'Allah.

That said, others who are practicing may choose to ramp up their ibaadah during such times as christmas and new years because of all the non-Islamic commotion going on around them. Sort of to counter that 'waswasa' they ramp up various forms of ibaadah.

It's quite appalling that I have had to do this, however due to severe misinterpretation of the thread due to its title on mashwera I've decided to edit the title.

I know many people who changed their lives and made niyyah, I was working on some brothers and they all made niyyah to start praying and have already done so, now their aiming for more in life religiously and each have set up plans for their own individual targets.

But yeah thanks for the support guys. It just reminds me of the day in my past when I was severely lost, one early morning I walked into a mosque not even knowing if its time for fajar or not but I felt the urge to go, I wanted peace I was tired of sin, I walked in and I sit down in the saff/row, next minute every single person turned around and looked at me and that look said 'out of all people what are you doing here ' ? I felt highly uncomfortable and worst those stares made me feel out of place like I don't belong there, after Salah as soon as the imam done salam I made a quick dua and walked out with heads still turning, to be honest I never went back and went off track more. I just felt awful for being looked down upon by uncles, brothers who are practicing, who made you feel like crap because you're not and they themselves are all Holy.

However that changed again years later, when I went Umrah and made niyyah to change, and I sure did Alhumdulilah, by the way this Umrah that changed my life was done in Easter holidays ( to some of you that may be unislamic as well )

A little story about intention :

Last year I was blessed to go out in Khurooj after quite some time, an effort I have a lot of love and admiration for. We had a mufti who would come and visit us as we were staying in an area he was staying at the time, this mufti used to teach in Raiwand, Pakistan. He told us a story about niyyah, he said in Lahore there was a traffic jam so traffic was stationary. In traffic right next to him was a rickshaw so as they were stationary his driver started giving the rickshaw driver dawah, they spoke for a few mins and the driver made niyyah to go in Khurooj for 4 months, anyway traffic started flowing so both went separate ways. Later on the mufti's driver found out that the rickshaw driver has passed away, so time passes by until he sees the rickshaw driver one night in his dream, he asks him what happened, how did Allah deal with you ? He said when the angels brought me I was standing there waiting, a voice came from the unseen which said he made niyyah to go out in my path even though he didn't go and therefore I have forgiven him. Allah Akbar the rest Allah knows best

May Allah make us those who bring people closer to Deen not put them off due to our thinking how Holy we are attitude !

I think I'm done with this thread

والسلام

I'm sorry if I portrayed my opinions wrongly, I did say they are not qualified. I appreciate all the posts so far, no harm in it. Just wanted to give it a view more fitting I guess.

May Allah keep our intentions pure and for his sake only.

I've no mission. Am just preparing to face the bare and rough reality of this perishable, delusive world.
