Interesting find. The largest empire by area was the British colonial empire.

Ofcourse the list doesn't include Older empires like that of Sulaiman (as), Nimrod etc due to lack of information.

I believe the term 'ruler of the world' must have been used in a figurative way to indicate a large empire.
