So far most of the questions have been about Sahaabah and tareekh. Lets get a bit technical, shall we..

Q31) A man dies leaving behind:

- Both parents
- wife
-2 daughters

How will his estate be divided (i.e. how many total shares will it be divided into, and who will get how many shares)

Honestly, this is a simple inheritance problem insha'Allah. Just use your resources and think.

Note: Use all the google you want, but kindly refrain from using online inheritance calculators (most of which are inaccurate anyway).

p.s: For those who want to know, I got the answer to the previous question from Hayatus Sahaabah, Volume 1.

2) wife gets 1/4 only if there are no children. There are children in this scenario.
3 the resulting fractions will add up to more than 1

Hope you can figure it out now. This is the famous case of Mimbariyya which Hadhrat 'Ali computed (in his head) on the Mimbar when he was put on the spot.

After all debts are settled, including any mahr due and owing to the wife, and bequests are paid out (not more than 1/3 of the total amount):
  • 2/3 of the inheritance is split equally between the daughters; then
  • 1/6 of what is remaining goes to the mother
  • 1/6 of what is remaining goes to the father
  • 1/8 of what is remaining goes to the wife

First 2/3rds are determined and then what remains is divided. So 1/6 of 1/3 goes to father, 1/6 of 1/3 goes to mother, and 1/8 of 1/3 goes to wife. There will be a remainder.
