Pardoned.

Desi (as br Naq66) rightly said means 'local'...or someone from 'back home' - the south Asian diaspora usually uses this to score points over their countrymen...(What does he know? HE is a DESI!) Gujjus living in faraway lands should know this very well. Even with their fake English accents which even the Desi's can make out and have a LOL over when they aren't watching, they still think they are a step ahead of their pals from 'back home'..(Gaaonwala!!)

Also, its also associated with butter, as in Desi ghee means clarified butter - referred because its more richer, deeper, fatter than normal ghee..also more expensive and usually used only for making sweets for special occasions.

Desi also means someone who doesn't know the ways of the world (or so called first world)..

tadka technically means tempering, usually its used together with dal as in dal tadka (also spelled as tarka) - meaning heating or frying various spices and releasing them...in the dal, while cooking or usually at the end of cooking.

So here, while I do not understand the ways of the world, like a good Desi who has to live up-to his reputation, I will learn, discover, read between the lines and give the tadka treatment to anyone who tries to cross the line, matching brick for brick and mortar with mortar and proving to be very expensive on the nerves in the process.

Don't fear. Just tall words. Just kidding.

I have asked (unsuccessfully though) Maulana Ya'sin to change my username, but I believe there is no such option on MS :-/

One username I'd like to change to if given an option is: Manpasand meaning 'What the soul / heart loves' - its a hindi word, a language closer to Urdu and also very interesting.

Actually my name is pronounced by others in that^ way. I personally write "Zahid". But my parents taught me in my childhood to write it "Zahed" (they didn't know whether it has any meaning or not).

I was thinking to ask you meaning of "tadka", but you've already replied yourself (it seems your kashf has a very strong network!). I couldn't understand clearly- are these mixed spices fried in oil called "tadka"? Or the process of adding that hot oil+fried spices into boiled dal is called "tadka"?

No, not the process, its the stuff you prepare in a different pan that's called 'tadka / tarka' which you then add to the dal.

How does such term represent you? Is this something like this- you are adding "tadka" in this "dull" (dal) forum to make it attractive?
