New £1m Aberdeen mosque design unveiled by Makespace

Mosque design The mosque is designed to hold a capacity of 1,000 worshippers

The design of a £1m mosque and community centre in Aberdeen has been released.

Planning permission for the Makespace-designed building on Nelson Street was granted in June this year.

There are believed to be about 4,000 Muslims in Aberdeen, and the city's two existing mosques are regularly full to capacity.

Work on the new project - designed to hold a capacity of 1,000 worshippers - is set to start early next year.

Think they've tried to make it look like state of the art, that design looks like a giant Moroccon style tile, oh well, as long as it serves the community and the purpose it's built for.

Spending 400k on the building with modesty and piety as the goal rather than glamour and hoohaa and spend the remaining 600 thousand pounds on education and Da'wah. I can go on and on about the Masjid system in UK so I'll just stop here

Are minarets not permitted (zoning)?

It is very plain masha'Allah, in that sense it is neutral though I can't really conceptualize what 1m can buy around there. The only piece of decorative work on the exterior (the huge piece at the corner), seems disproportionate and almost celtic. Otherwise, I like the simplicity.

Here is more about the building and I like that it is a conversion rather than building from scratch. I still can't really conceptualize what the price-tag means.

The purpose of a Mosque (in our lands) should be to set it apart for people to look at it and be reminded of Islam. Design should be a Dawah tool.

Considering low costs and expenses in Aberdeen this is expensive and looks like a bad shoebox!  Pakistani community in Aberdeen is super-rich so this is some Dr Saheb's "figment" of imagination!!!

It is unassuming, especially given that other places of worship are quite grand and unique in the area (google churches). People in the area may come to know it as a mosque but others who happen to pass by won't know just by looking at the exterior.

Well... the project was approved by council and these things usually either happen by bid (for public projects usually) or through consultations with the community so I assume this project either won out of others or was approved by those who will be using it the most.

I like it. Just wish there were minarets.

Sister,

There is no legislation against Minarets in UK but due to soft underpinnings (ground conditions), the tower is usually built from concrete but the Minaret is pre-fabricated and then lifted (and bolted) on top of the base. Please see the most elaborate Deobandi Masjid and the Minaret is about 1/3rd fibreglass and it’s expensive! Also see one of the most beautiful Turkish Mosques in UK

The Sikhs who have a dome styled construction to their places of worship don’t have Minarets but don’t use prefabricated material and actually carve out the whole piece in concrete.

Sikh places of worship are legislated (in their religion) to look like this so they have to spend the money.

I don't have a problem with saving money and not adding domes/minarets but the structure can be made to look like a Masjid at least!

Curiosity took over and I had a peek at the location via google-maps. Masha'Allah there is some greenery around the side of the building and insha'Allah it will not be disturbed as there are also train tracks running along that side and they would provide a natural sound barrier. Also, there seems to be an electrical substation (though the image is blurry so perhaps I am mistaken) immediately behind the warehouse which I would worry about if I was to spend a lot of time in the masjid.

Zoning restrictions in certain areas may not allow for minaret types of structures. It would have been nice to see even a tiny one - that would give away the identity of the building I think.

I may be wrong but I don't think that Minarets will be disallowed in UK as they will find an exemption for a Mosque. Cost wise a dome may be cheaper because its hollow and easier to fabricate.

Personally I think its way over priced, but if that will get the community going and getting the kids off the street, then its worth every penny.

Also, its what's inside that counts, right? As long as they are on the right path and the rights of Allah is being met, then I see no issues with the current Islamic architecture.
