You are of Turkish origin and also speak (fluent) English. Do you insert Turkish words in your English when spending time on an English forum without translation despite having very good command of English and knowing fully well that you are on an English forum?

Cultural anecdotes need to be conveyed and lessons from them learned but it can only be done if the person reading it can understand it. Ofcourse people are free to write stuff in Urdu, Turkish, Swahili, Cantonese, French whatever as long as the ALL READERS are able to comprehend.

Is Urdu superior to Turkish and are you under obligation to learn and understand Urdu to spend time with Deobandees? Why? Urdu comes from Turkish so if anything we should be under obligation to learn Turkish, logically speaking.

And all of us should be under obligation to learn Arabic,Islamically speaking.

I thought the objective of Tassawuff is to save others from inconvenience???

This problem is occuring from pride and haughtiness of imposing Asian culture onto the whole world and smug superiority that our Akabir spoke Urdu therefore you must also understand it. In UK and USA Masjids when Non-Asians ask for translations they are given token attention and even reprimanded for not knowing Urdu. We have a large number of younger generation of Asian Muslims who have almost no knowledge of Urdu yet our talks, Ta'leem is still done in Urdu.

Majority of Asian Muslims in UK are Gujratees (Indians), Mirpurees (Kashmirees), Punjabees (Pakisatnees) and Pushtuns (Pakistanees)  none of them speak Urdu either as a first language or with any special degree of fluency and regularly make mistakes in speaking and writing.

UK Darul-uloom teachers regularly make glaring mistakes while speaking and writing Urdu. UK Darul-uloom graduates have very little proficiency in reading Urdu commentaries of our Akabirs and its painful to even sit throughly lectures where they are trying to read the Malfoozat of Hazrat Thanwi (RA)...

Listening to half Urdu or our British and American brothers is painful in Islamic talks on youtube and MP3s.

Ridicolous circus...

South African Ulamah seem to have better grasp of Urdu

Yikes!

Well, alhamdulillah, there seems to be great effort on the part of many to translate works into English (from Urdu) so insha'Allah that will be helpful for those of us who don't know Urdu.

Also, again, language is so fluent... who knows, perhaps English as we know and speak it now will morph into a language that is infused with Urdu, Persian and Turkish. Look, Turkish as spoken in Turkey, is heavily infused with French, English, Persian, and Arabic words... its all relative really.

And, yes, it is very difficult to understand at first but once a person who wants to understand actually works towards it and breaks through that initial barrier, it opens up another treasure trove of knowledge.

May Allah Ta'aala grant us the ability to learn Arabic. Ameen.

Sister,

If you are interested in Deobandees, I highly recommend that you read the works of Shaykhul-Hind Mahmud al-Hasan Deobandi (RA) who was the first student and graduate of Darul-uloom Deoband.

In my (naive) view he is the Mujaddid of India because most (notable) Deobandees are his students in Fiqh, Hadeeth, Tassawuff and political revival.

You will notice that most (laymen) Deobandees neither talk about him nor know much about him and skip to his students like Hazrat Thanwi (RA), thus effectively starting from the 2nd generation.

The beauty of Human intellect is witness to Allah's greatness how powerful he has actually made our brains.

We refer to a strong mind as a "computer brain" but in a way that's an insult. Imagine being created like computers? If one character is wrong in computing language, the computer will fail to compute.

The human can deduce from the surrounding words what is meant. So while it's an etiquette to make it as easy as possible for the reader to understand and keep it as well worded to decrease unneeded lengthening of sentences, using foreign words is very normal.

We type in English but we never type "Amen", we always type "Ameen"

And for the "computer brains" out there, I know the contradiction here that if our brains were created like computers then we'd communicate like it too so the misunderstanding would never occur. Well, it would because in computing there's many languages, try using php on a perl script or a windows software on a Mac. As humans, a person can speak any language and we can deduce most of it simply from tone, similar words, actions and circumstance. Amazing

JazakAllah khayran.

Unfortunately, I am not very bookish and am easily either overwhelmed or bored (with some books) when I don't know where to start or end but alhamdulillah I challenge myself even if it takes a decade to work through something.

As an example, last November (2012), I started reading a seemingly simple and relatively short book titled Love for Allah by Shaykh Zulfiqar Ahmad (db). It is now November 2013 and I'm only on chapter 2 now. I found the words are so heavy and draw me into thoughts that I find myself exhausted after a short period or unable to focus proper attention so I'll start and stop, start and stop, start and stop and perhaps days, weeks, moths, even years will go by before I finish 2 pages of reading. Mind you, there was an extremely long stretch of time when I didn't even lift the cover... but, you get the point.

This is not with all books. Some I can devour with ease, regardless of size.

Resource recommendations are always most welcome but please don't expect a summary any time soon, or ever.

SF section members:

Kindly inform administration there that radio keeps playing whenever I go to the site. I've e-mailed them but they may not have seen it yet. The radio is mainstream pop music and news... irritating to say the least and I know it has nothing to do with SF but that's the only site this happens on so I believe there is a glitch somewhere.

Please, especially those who are admins there, kindly pass this on.

JazakAllah khayran
