What is the Iron Dome

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Dome

Iron Dome  is a mobile all-weather air defense system developed. It is a missile system designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets and artillery shells fired from distances of 4 to 70 kilometers away and whose trajectory would take them to a populated area. The system, created as a defensive countermeasure to the rocket threat against Israel's civilian population on its northern and southern borders, uses technology first employed in Rafael's SPYDER system. Iron Dome was declared operational and initially deployed on 27 March 2011 near Beersheba. On 7 April 2011, the system successfully intercepted a Grad rocket launched from Gaza for the first time. On 10 March 2012, The Jerusalem Post reported that the system shot down 90% of rockets launched from Gaza that would have landed in populated areas.

By November 2012, it had intercepted 400+ rockets.

The Iron Dome system is also effective against aircraft up to an altitude of 32,800 ft (10,000 m).

Cost

In 2010, Iron Dome was criticized by Reuven Pedatzur, a military analyst, former fighter pilot and professor of political science at Tel Aviv University for costing too much compared to the cost of a Qassam rocket (fired by Palestinian forces), so that launching very large numbers of Qassams could essentially attack Israel's financial means. The estimated cost of each Tamir interceptor missile is US$35,000–50,000 whereas a crudely manufactured Qassam rocket costs around $800. Rafael responded that the cost issue was exaggerated since Iron Dome intercepts only rockets determined to constitute a threat, and that the lives saved and the strategic impact are worth the cost.

In an op-ed in Haaretz, Jamie Levin suggests that the success of the Iron Dome system will likely increase demands to field additional systems across Israel. Budget shortfalls mean that Israel will be forced to weigh spending on missile defenses against other expenditures. Such funds, he argues, will likely come from programs intended to help the most vulnerable sectors of society, such as social welfare.

From 1995 to 2005, the United States and Israel jointly developed Nautilus but scrapped the system after concluding it was not feasible, having spent $600 million.

The Americans set aside more than $200m (£125m) to help Israel pay for the system, but concerns over its cost have persisted

Each Iron Dome battery costs about $50m to install. So far, there are five batteries in operation, but officials plan to have eight more by next year.

Each Tamir interceptor missile costs roughly $60,000.

This still means that as of Saturday night Israel had spent roughly $29m on interceptor missiles in three days.

rt.com/news/israel-app-alert-rockets-181/

Now there are two smartphone applications designed to warn users of an incoming rocket attack. The Red Alert warning app alerts users where the latest air raid sirens are going off and when a missile is on its way in. Users can even customize the sound of the alarm on their phone warning them of the approaching rocket.

The Red Alert warning app, developed by Kobi Snir, is free - and comes only in Hebrew. It also allows users to send messages to others who downloaded the application.

The app will warn the user stuck out in the open that a rocket is approaching, and will even tells users where the nearest shelter is.

The Secure Spaces app, which is also free, uses GPS to determine the user's location and, using Google Maps, displays the closest protected space. Protected Spaces are determined by the Home Front Command, the Israeli Defense Forces regional command, which protects the country's civilian protection. The Command provides addresses and the distance of a shelter from where you are.

Residents with the app can also share their 'secure spaces,' such as private bomb shelters and strong rooms, with their countrymen.

Unlike the Israelis, the Palestinians don't have the luxury of air raid shelters or strong rooms, let alone an anti-missile shield such as Iron Dome.

More than 120 Palestinians have been killed since Wednesday, when Israel started its Pillar of Defense assault on Gaza. In Israel five people were killed in the same period of time.

The truth behind the truce is that the Israelis can't afford to spend millions a day. This truce will end as soon as they have a better self defense system.

Many of the iron dome missiles missed its target and landed back into home territory damaging Israel furthermore. Alhumdulillah.

Some may think, why the irony?

Well its costing millions and still failing.

According to the Palestinians, it has cost Israel $1.2m dollars over the 8 day war.

If this is true, isn't it funny?

Israel tests Magic Wand missile system

The Israeli regime has completed the first round of tests on a new missile shield system following a failure of its Iron Dome to intercept hundreds of rockets and missiles fired from the Gaza Strip.

The testing was reportedly conducted in Negev Desert on Monday.

The interceptor missile system, which is called the "Magic Wand" or "David's Sling," is being co-developed by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and the American Raytheon Company.

The system is designed to intercept short-range ballistic missiles, large-caliber rockets and cruise missiles, as well as long-range rockets from a distance of at least 70 km. It is scheduled to become operational in 2014.

The Iron Dome missile shield only intercepted about 420 out of some 1,500 retaliatory rockets fired by the Palestinian resistance fighters into the Israeli cities during the recent Israeli onslaught on Gaza.

"The landing of Hamas rockets in Israeli cities, which killed at least five Israelis, has raised serious questions on how the Israeli regime would protect itself in case of other retaliatory strikes." An Egypt-mediated ceasefire agreement on November 21 ended eight days of Israeli attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip that killed more than 160 Palestinians and injured about 1,200 others.

The Israeli regime developed the Iron Dome with a 200-million-dollar fund from the United States. Washington plans to give Tel Aviv another $600 million for additional batteries and replacement missiles.

Tel Aviv is also working with the giant American aerospace corporation, Boeing, on another missile shield known as Arrow 3, designed to intercept missiles that can travel hundreds,

Messaging app Yo, which in the past week has rocketed to the top of the app download charts, has been hit by a hack.

Creator Or Arbel told technology news site TechCrunch the app was having "security issues".

The app allows users to send a message saying "yo" to friends - and nothing else.

It has been branded "pointless", but has nonetheless raised $1m (£600,000) in investment.

Israeli Rocket Defense System Is Failing, Expert Analysts Say

Although it appears to hit incoming Hamas rockets, Israel's system could be falling short of detonating the rockets' warheads.

By David Talbot on July 10, 2014

Flawed technology: Analysts question whether Israel's Iron Dome air defense system, seen here firing to intercept a rocket headed for Tel Aviv, is achieving its aims.

Even though Israel's U.S.-funded "Iron Dome" rocket-defense interceptors appear to be hitting Hamas rockets in recent days, they are almost certainly failing in the crucial job of detonating those rockets' shrapnel-packed explosive warheads, expert analysts say.

As a result, rockets fired from Gaza are probably plunging to the ground with intact explosives. The fact that they aren't causing injuries or deaths in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and other cities is mainly a matter of luck, the analysts add.

On Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces said missiles from the system had intercepted 56 rockets fired out of Gaza, preventing strikes in several cities. Yet Richard Lloyd, a weapons expert and consultant who is a past Engineering Fellow at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, says that because these interceptions had almost certainly not detonated the rockets' warheads, the system is essentially failing.

The Iron Dome system-meant to hit rockets traveling tens of miles from launch to landing-is a smaller cousin to the Patriot system, which attempts to hit much longer-range, faster incoming missiles. Iron Dome fires interceptors six inches wide and 10 feet long and uses sensors and real-time guidance systems to try to zero in on the rockets.

When an Iron Dome interceptor gets close to an incoming rocket, a proximity fuse triggers the interceptor to detonate, spraying out metal rods that are intended to strike and detonate the warheads on the incoming rockets, neutralizing their ability to maim people and destroy things on the ground.

Ted Postol, the MIT physicist and missile-defense expert who aided Lloyd's analysis and who in 1991 debunked claims by the U.S. Army that its Patriot missiles were successfully shooting down Iraqi Scud missiles during the first Gulf War (see "Postol vs. the Pentagon" and "Preventing Fratricide"), agrees that they were failing in this crucial warhead-detonation job.

Postol had been an admirer of Iron Dome after initial reports of its performance during previous rocket assaults in 2012 (see "Why Israel's Iron Dome Missile Defense System Actually Works"). But later analyses of interceptor contrails showed that its guidance system was behaving erratically. Instead of smoothly rising to meet their targets, the interceptors were making sharp turns and engaging from the side or behind, he says.

Those problems appear to be continuing, he says. "We expected that after more than a year and a half of time, whatever problems there were in the system related to guidance and control would be mitigated, or somewhat mitigated," he says. "As it turns out, this is not the case. As far as we can tell, it is behaving in the same erratic way as it did in November 2012."

The Iron Dome interceptors need to hit an incoming rocket head-on to have much hope of detonating a warhead, Lloyd says. And initial visual analysis of the engagements in recent days shows that the interceptions that are occurring are from the side or behind, which provide "essentially a zero chance of destroying the warhead," based on the basic physics of such engagements, he adds.

Hamas rockets in late 2012 were going as far as 75 kilometers (47 miles) but some are now able to go twice as far.

With a single rocket, Hamas rattles its enemy.

The suspension of nearly all foreign flights to Israel came after a rocket landed near Ben Gurion Airport, possibly giving Hamas leverage in any negotiated end to the conflict.

JERUSALEM; AND GAZA CITY, GAZA â€" After firing more than 2,000 rockets at Israel, Hamas hit the money yesterday. With a single strike, it managed to stop virtually all foreign airlines from coming into Israel, depriving the country both of an economic lifeline and its reputation as being able to carry on no matter what its enemies do.

The spate of suspensions on Ben Gurion Airport appear unlikely to force Israel to the negotiating table; if anything, it may strengthen its resolve to quash Hamas’s military capabilities. But it has given Hamas more leverage in any eventual cease-fire negotiations.

“Hamas will insist on lifting the siege, and more than that,” says Akram Atallah, a columnist for Al-Ayyam newspaper in Gaza.

Hoax Alert..... Is it really a hoax?

I wouldn't be surprised!

Israeli expert says Iron Dome defence is a hoax

An Israeli scientist and award-winning security expert has called the Iron Dome missile defence system "the biggest hoax the world has seen", Addustour news website has reported.

According to Dr Motty Scheffer, "Today, there is no missile which can intercept other missiles or rocket-propelled grenades, and the Iron Dome is a light audio system which blocks Israeli public opinion and, of course, itself. In fact, all the explosions that we have seen in the atmosphere are self-destruction. The Iron Dome did not launch any rocket that could intercept at least one missile fired from Gaza."

Sheffer added that the concept of open areas is a myth created to amplify the Iron Dome's ability as a missile interceptor. He made an indirect accusation against the dome's operating staff of misleading the public: "The missiles which were intercepted by the Iron Dome and did not reach the ground are hypothetical missiles produced and destroyed in the Dome's computer control room; as of this moment, nobody has seen an intercepted missile fall to the ground."

The scientist made his comments after the challenge raised by Hamas's military wing, the Izzaddin Al-Qassam Brigades on Saturday, which fired J80 missiles at Tel Aviv and defied the Iron Dome and its experts to intercept them. The J80s have been fitted with a jamming system to get through Israel's missile defences.

He claimed that the parts that we are shown on the ground belong to the Iron Dome itself. "The Iron Dome is a plot created by interest groups who are afraid of peace, including the security industry and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu."
