Remember that story about howGoogle was supposedly on Samsung's you know what to get rid of the bloatware on their devices? Well either it was too late to change the Galaxy S 5, or the report was completely unfounded, because the usable space on the Galaxy S 5 is going to make a few people angry. GottaBeMobiledid a quick check on one of the demo units and found it to have only 8.65GB out of a possible 16GB that is usable. I don't have to do the math do I? That is roughly 50% according to my calculations, and is a little below last year's Galaxy S 4.

This isn't surprising, but I am also wondering why the rumor that Samsung was going ditch the 16GB version didn't hold? It seems to me that if Samsung wants to continue to throw bloatware on their phones, they should at least make the entry model 32GB.

GSMA 2014 Global Mobile Awards announced; HTC, Nokia, Apple come out on top

by Stephen Schenck on February 25, 2014 2:29 PM

Part of what makes the Mobile World Congress such a special event to cover - as opposed to a trade show like CES - is that its focus is so specific to the mobile industry. That gives the manufacturers involved the opportunity to really put their smartphones and tablets front and center, not drowned out by new gaming consoles, HDTVs, and connected appliances. The organization behind all of this is the GSM Association (yeah - like from the phone standard), and in addition to putting on this whole shindig, the GSMA recognizes some of the companies, products, and services that really shined over the course of the past year. Today, the GSMA revealed the winners of its 19th Annual Global Mobile awards.

There a lot of categories, and correspondingly, a lot of winners. But a few really stand out as some of the more notable awards, so without further ado, let's look at the winners:

If you participated in our Pocketnow Readers' Choice awards, this should come as no big surprise, but the GSMA has crowned the HTC One as the best smartphone of the year.

Our poll doesn't correspond quite so nicely with this next winner, but it did manage to snag first runner-up in our own tally: the GSMA names the iPad Air as the year's best tablet.

A special shot-out goes to Nokia and its Lumia 520, which takes home the title "best low-cost smartphone." Then again, with the cut-off point for that category being a $150 wholesale cost, it's not like it had a lot of fierce competition.

Finally, LG deserves a mention for being the most innovative manufacturer. The GSMA doesn't name any specific devices, but things like those rear-mounted volume controls and the eye-catching G Flex probably had something to do with it.

You won't believe how good the Galaxy S5′s new battery-saving mode is

Tuesday February 25, 2014

Samsung finally took the wraps off of its brand new Galaxy S5 smartphone on Monday and we took an in-depth look at the handset right after the company's Mobile World Congress press conference was over. Long story short: we think it looks like a solid iterative effort from Samsung but overall, it lacks key features that scream "buy me." There are a few new additions that future S5 owners will find particularly interesting though, and for us, the Galaxy S5′s new "ultra power saving mode" is somewhere near the top of the list.

As we explained briefly in our Galaxy S5 hands-on preview, Samsung's new hero phone will ship with a newultra power saving mode that extends battery life when users are on the go with nowhere to plug in. The S5 features very impressive battery performance in standard mode, according to Samsung, with a battery pack that will supply an estimated 10 hours of web browsing or 11 hours of video playback per charge.

But wait until you see how amazingultra power saving mode is.

When enabled, this new feature restricts colors on the display to just black and white, limits background processes, and restricts which apps the owner can use. It sounds pretty drastic, but there's a good reason: As Engadget noted, Samsung saysultra power saving mode will allow a Galaxy S5 with just 10% of its charge remaining to last up to 24 hours.

You read that right - 24 hours of battery life on a 10% charge.

Ultra power saving mode is easily one of the Galaxy S5′s most appealing new features and those who do buy the phone will have a sense of security that other smartphone owners will be incredibly jealous of. And if Samsung decides to extend this awesome feature to other handsets, portable battery pack makers are in for some serious trouble.

See the Samsung Galaxy S5's heart rate monitor in action

Here's how to put your finger on the pulse of your own pulse, right from Samsung's next superphone.

BARCELONA, Spain -- Exercise aficionados who want to log their heart-rate after a workout and even in between have a new tool in the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Using it is as simple as selecting the heart-rate monitor icon from within Samsung's newly-updated S Health 3.0 app, which comes preloaded in the Galaxy S5. Then, you place your index finger on the center of the flash module, just to the right of the flash.

The app wants you to hold your finger in place for several seconds, while holding still and shutting your yap as the monitor calculates. Your results don't mean a lot on their own, but when you track your heart rate over time, you can watch your progress as your blood pressure rises and drops

Lol anyone hear what happened to bitcoin ? Some people over on Reddit are virtually in tears, some invested all their life savings including their children's college education funds.

Seriously why didn't that get out when it was being traded at 1k for a bitcoin, I guess greed took over.

I'm glad I never invested in this, the only people who made money were the ones who got in early and got out early.

Quote:
- Mtgox (the biggest bitcoin exchange) is bankrupt so people who still had coins with them lost it all.

Bitcoins were worth $1000 EACH on Mtgox like 1.5 months ago, so if you had just 100 BTC, it was worth 100k USD. Now it's zero because if you have your BTC on Mtgox, it's gone.

This one guy had 4700 BTC, if he withdrew when it was 1k per BTC, he'd have $4.7 million dollars.

-I am the biggest loser at 4700+ BTC. Screenshot from a few days ago for the purposes of record keeping.

I don't know how dying feels, but I'm pretty sure that's how I feel now.

-Lost over 2100 coins.
There's losing money, then there's losing money.
I'm still hopeful that something good will happen. If not, I would not be unhappy if someone ordered a hit.

-About 14 coins. And it happens to be the last 14 coins my wife will ever let me invest in bitcoin. She wants nothing to do with it now. Not for investing, not for spending -- nothing. And it's a damned shame.
I love how all the other bitcoin companies got together to say that their money was safe. Did they think that would help people like me? Do they think my wife cares?

-I want to start off by saying that I've been waiting for this moment for a while. I knew it was bound to happen sooner or later, as soon as we weren't able to withdraw our coins from Mt. Gox weeks ago. I stupidly had my life's savings in bitcoin, and when the price started to fall, I converted to dollars and watched the price plummet. I lost $357,000. Not to try to earn a bunch of sympathy or anything but this was not only my money but it was going to be my 5 year old son's education fund which i took out of fidelity about 1 year ago to mess with bitcoins. I dont know what the hell to do any more. I'm sitting here on reddit looking for comfort or just something but I don't know what I'm going to do now at all. I don't have anything to live for any more and the only thing I have left is just talking about it here I guess. I can't express what I'm feeling right now. THat was just sitting there and I couldn't take it out how could this whole shop just pack up and dissapear? I don't know if anyone here knows the facts or whats going on but I want to or if you have any slighest shred of evidence that its possible they arent really gone please et me know here. if im never going to see my money again all of it im going to either kill myself which i dont want to do because i want to live even though i have nothing to live for now, except my son who is now completely doomed

-I'm going to come forth and admit I am probably one of the largest loser in Gox. I had 7911 BTC in my account which has been locked for almost a year.

read www.reddit.com/r/bitcoin for the panic

I feel no sympathy for these guys, they knew that it was a risky investment and they should have got out when it was up to 1k per BTC.

I've tried to edit the above as much as I can so it suits being on an Islamic forum, if not then feel free to delete.

iPhone And iPad Users Hit By Security Glitch

Users are told to update their devices to fix a bug that could let criminals obtain personal data over secure connections.

Millions of iPhone, iPad and iPod users have been told to download a crucial security update after a major flaw left them vulnerable to cyber criminals.

The update to Apple's iOS 7 mobile operating system fixes a glitch that allowed "an attacker" to capture or modify data during supposedly secure transactions.

Matthew Green, a professor in cryptography at Johns Hopkins University, said: "It's as bad as you could imagine, that's all I can say."

A security patch for the bug, known as Goto Fail, on MacBooks and iMacs running OS X has not yet been released.

Apple has admitted the flaw relates to the way data is passed between internet browsers and websites that use digital security certificates, such as banking sites and online retailers.

These websites - identified by the padlock icon shown in the address bar - should be able to send encrypted information securely.

However, "missing validation steps" meant security certificates were not checked properly, meaning hackers could impersonate websites to gain personal data.

The flaw is thought to be linked to a single line of code in Apple's operating systems.

Google engineer Adam Langley said he believed the glitch was "just a mistake", but added: "This sort of subtle bug deep in the code is a nightmare."

Paul Ducklin, a security expert at internet security firm Sophos, said Mac users should avoid using Apple's Safari internet browser and switch to alternatives such as Firefox or Chrome until the problem is fully fixed.

They should also avoid insecure wi-fi networks, he added.

One comment made in the reviews was, "I love it. I wake up in the morning and hold my phone, it feels like I'm in heaven". But then again, they don't know what it's like being a Muslim.

Wise choice, now that you've experienced the iPhone, S4 and the One, please give your honest opinion. Was I talking non sense?

(I've also experienced them for longer periods)

give me a few days to play with it but as of now I really like the feeling and weight and the Arabic font.

I would just like to know a few things about how to operate the HTC One.

like the iPhone and Samsung does HTC One have a function where you can press a button and delete all the previous apps or web pages that you recently used?

I like the voice dictation but does the phone have in function where it can audibly read texts?

You can keep a hold of the home button that brings up the current apps, then you swipe them closed. The good thing is that it's only 9 programs so the others will automatically close, this also doesn't slow.the phone down.

You will have to go through some settings in the keyboard section I think. There is something there for text to speech, but I haven't used it.

Ironically, I took this screenshot this morning because I remember you asked before.

Like I said, I've never used it before so I don't know what it can do for you.

I still can't figure out how to make the phone speak text that I highlight but so far, these are the pros I observed:

better screen resolution
better sound
better picture resolution
better Arabic fonts!
better Apps
better feel
better weight
better price!
bigger screen
better format & display
better performance in terms of speed

That's all I can think of for right now...

I managed to get the phone to speak to me for every single time I touched any part of the screen, very annoying, but very beneficial for those with sight impairments. (Accessibility settings)

Took ages to figure out how to actually stop it from working.

The options of text to speech are in the phone with different languages and speed rates. The issue is to figure out how to make the most of it.

InshaAllah, a little Googling and we'll have this going for you soon.

If other android users can also try this as it should be a common thing.
