Was I right to detract the Apple salesman away from his Nexus 5?

Will the faster, better Nexus 5 out do the HTC One?

Let's see what happens, stay tuned!

Nexus 5 is and always has been a cheap phone so it reaches more people. If anyone wants a Nexus 5, the cheapest place to get it is from Google play store. They are selling fast so currently there is a shortage.

The question is, would I recommend it?

YES! why, because like the other phones, you wont be paying too much for it and it'll practically do everything the other phones can do and in many cases, even better! Great specs, super speed, brill phone. But Was I wrong to advise the salesman otherwise!!! No.

As we watched the HTC One and Google Nexus 5 swap back and forth to #1 on the charts last week we weren't sure which smartphone would pull it off. But your votes spoke volumes again, keeping the HTC One #1 for a record breaking 34th week.

"The most complete smartphone ever."

Best build quality and design in a smartphone along with the iPhone. Crisp, vivid, bright display which is the best display on a smartphone, period. Great call quality, due to the Boomsound speakers. The front-facing speakers are out of this world, best speakers on a phone by far, period. The battery life is average, nothing great, nothing terribly bad, will get you through a day with mixed usage. The camera is a good day to day shooter, great low light performance, and good, useful camera features. HTC Sense 5.5 is great! Cannot go wrong buying this fast device even 7-8 months down the line.

Display 5/5
Battery Life 4/5
Apps & Media Support 5/5
Reception & Call Quality 5/5
Design/Form Factor 5/5

Overall 4.8

Smartphone camera reveals PIN
11 November 2013 1:19 pm

Cameras and microphones on smartphones can reveal the user's PIN
The PIN for a smartphone can be revealed by its camera and microphone, researchers have warned.

Using a programme called PIN Skimmer a team from the University of Cambridge found that codes entered on a number-only soft keypad could be identified.

The software watches your face via the camera and listens to clicks through the microphone as you type.

The tests were carried out on the Google Nexus-S and the Galaxy S3 smartphones.

"We demonstrated that the camera, usually used for conferencing or face recognition, can be used maliciously," say the report's authors Prof Ross Anderson and Laurent Simon.

According to the research, the microphone is used to detect "touch-events" as a user enters their PIN. In effect, it can "hear" the clicks that the phone makes as a user presses the virtual number keys.

The camera then estimates the orientation of the phone as the user is doing this and "correlates it to the position of the digit tapped by the user".

"We watch how your face appears to move as you jiggle your phone by typing," said Ross Anderson, professor of security engineering at Cambridge University.

"It did surprise us how well it worked," he told the BBC.

When trying to work out four-digit PINs the programme was successful more than 50% of the time after five attempts. With eight-digit PINs the success rate was 60% after 10 attempts.

Many smartphone users have a pincode to lock their phone but they are increasingly used to access other types of applications on a smartphone, including banking apps.

This raises the question of which resources should remain accessible on a phone when someone is entering a sensitive PIN, say the report's authors.

Randomise keys

"For instance when a call comes in, the user needs to hear the ring tone while unlocking his phone; otherwise he may assume the caller has hung up."

One suggestion to prevent a PIN being identified is to use a longer number but the researchers warn this affects "memorability and usability".

"Randomising" the position of numbers on the keypad is also suggested but the researchers believe this would "cripple usability on phones".

Getting rid of passwords altogether and using fingerprints or face recognition are offered as more drastic solutions.

"If you're developing payment apps, you'd better be aware that these risks exist," warns Prof Anderson.

Virgin Media cost and speed increase
12 November 2013 12:51 PM

Prices will be going up but a faster service could suit houses where several people are online at once
Virgin Media broadband customers will see bills rise by 6.7% from February.

The company said the price rise would allow it to remain competitive and provide value for its customers.

And it would at the same time begin a rollout to 12.5 million homes served by its fibre-optic broadband service of speeds up to 152Mbps.

That rise, from 120Mbps, would allow users to download a high-definition (HD) film in less than four minutes and a music album in four seconds, it said.

The company said it was also working to increase the speed of other broadband services by up to 20Mbps.

Downloading music will become quicker
"This is probably the last time that customers will have to take this kind of price hike on the chin," said Dominic Baliszewski, from website broadbandchoices.co.uk.

"New rules from Ofcom governing mid-contract price rises will come into effect from early 2014, forcing providers to give customers the opportunity to cancel their contract without financial penalty if they increase prices during their contract term."

Virgin Media's chief executive officer Tom Mockridge said: "As people connect more things simultaneously to the internet more often, they need powerful broadband with the bandwidth to deliver a great experience for everyone in the home."

Mr Baliszewski added: "For example, 10 people could all be watching HD video content separately without experiencing any buffering."

According to Ofcom, the industry regulator, the average residential broadband speed across the UK is 14.7Mbps. But this increases to 43.6Mbps where the user is connected to the fibre-based network.

The latest figures show 19% of homes have taken up a superfast service, with speeds of 30Mbps.

BT has previously announced their broadband customers will face a price rise of 6.5% from January 2014.

Some more info regarding the post above about PINS

(The Independant)

A research paper from the University of Cambridge has outlined how PIN numbers used on smartphones can be recorded by hijacking the device’s camera and microphones.

The news is especially worrying as the rise of mobile banking means that PIN numbers entered into smartphones are often used to secure more than just the phone’s basic functionality.

The researchers, Laurent Simon and Ross Anderson, used a custom piece of software called PIN Skimmer to grab the PIN numbers. This program hijacks phones’ microphones to detect when you tap the touchscreen and then syncs this with data from the camera to work out where on the screen you pressed.

For example, when right-handed individuals press a button in the top left hand corner of their phone’s screen they often tilt the phone towards their thumb with their supporting fingers. This changes position of the user’s face as recorded by the front-facing camera, giving the program a unique marker that corresponds with a number on screen.

The research was carried out on a pair of Android-powered smartphones, a Nexus S and Galaxy S3, and under test conditions PIN Skimmer was able to work out more than 50 per cent of four digit PIN numbers after five attempts and 60 per cent of eight digit numbers after ten attempts.

One step in the malware’s process even presents users with a game where they have to match pairs of icons that appear onscreen. The program can record data from the camera during the game and then use this as a reference guide, matching how the user appears in the camera to where they’ve touched the screen.

The researchers suggested methods of obstructing the malware, but noted that randomising the order in which numbers appear on an onscreen keypad would “cripple usability” whilst employing longer PIN number would affect “memorability and usability”.

More “drastic” solutions included getting rid of passwords altogether in favour of face recognition or fingerprint scanners, although neither of these methods are yet common.

"If you're developing payment apps [for mobiles], you'd better be aware that these risks exist," Professor Anderson told the BBC.

Abu Mohammeds got HTC One which is the latest model, the HTC One max will be the upgrade to that but with bigger screen, I've checked the size and it's one inch bigger, and obviously with few higher tweaks, so it's just one of two options really, so it's down to personal preference, especially considering the size of the two.

HTC One max not released until couple of weeks.

If I had option I would head for HTC One max, but still unsure with convenience of size.
Lets see abu Mohammeds take on it.

I use a gel case. (I also got a really nice skin wrap, in blue as posted a few pages ago)

Not sure when the M8 will be released. But it will be bigger and more expensive. Roughly 5" screen. It is a lot of money so I wouldn't advise anyone to just go out and get it. But if you're getting it free on contract, "What are you waiting for man!"

The HTC One Max is a phablet at 5.9" screen and is too big. If youre moving from the iphone I wouldn't recommend the Max.

There are a few small minor things the One Max will not have, but its not essential.

My brother just got his HTC One in silver because he thinks the black looks like the Z10 (not the case) He upgraded from his HTC HD2 (which he loved to bits) and he says its a lot faster & slimmer. and the main point, its still slimmer with the gel case.

I'll update this post with the case and sticker wraps, so look out for the very slight change.

Seriously abu Mohammed I checked out the size of a Samsung handset which is same size as the HTC max, and it sounds big but isn't that's massive where it's unmanageable, it would be great to use, easier on the eyes, but yes consider the cost.

My upgrade has been due for a little while now.

A quick little true story!

I bought my wife an S3 in grey from Madinah during Hajj, She loved it. She then got another S3 in white from here :-( and then wanted to change it for the S4 or the HTC One when it came out. So I asked her 100 times which colour etc. She kept changing her mind. So I waited until she was 100% sure. She finally decided to go for the black HTC One. So I sold her S3 and got the Black HTC One.

She was in a wedding where the phone was the star attraction, took some of the best pics/vids etc especially the slow mo and Zoe. Anyways, she found it to be too loud and the sensor had a glitch (which is fine now) so in two weeks time, she decided she wanted the S4 (Yes I was pulling my hair out, but wait for it) I decided to sell my HTC One X to cover me, I sold it unwillingly and kept the HTC One for my self ;-) ;-) ;-)

So now she has the S4 in black and loved every single feature of the phone. Now she is bored of all those gimmicks and very irritated by them, she wants "MY" HTC One back!!!!!!

No way! Luckily she wants the HTC in Silver. So now, I gotta sell her S4 with a slight dent after having for only a month :-(

Women!

I've told her and she understands money doesn't grow on trees, I cant just give her phone away or just go and get another HTC One (since I buy off line and not on contract)

I wish I wasn't into gadgets sometimes. Since it is my fault. Its my fault she doesn't like the S4, I kept taking the mickey ;-)
