Can anyone tell me how to put the volume down to silent or vibrate "from the lock screen" without unlocking the phone? (Samsung)
I could normally press the power button to get the screen on or double tap the screen to get the screen on and simply lower the volume before going into the mosque, meeting, sleep or any other reason.
Previously, I remember something similar with Samsung where the volume could be put to vibrate by pressing the button down all the way, and then pressing it once more would silence it.
Under normal circumstances I've always been able to do it from every phone I've ever had.
Nothing will ever beat the HTC phones I've had and still have, but since Google bought their mobile tech, it's never been the same. HTC have stopped making the best phones in the world :(
India has 400 million WhatsApp users, making the country its biggest market.
WhatsApp has said it blocked over two million accounts in India in May and June for violating rules.
The service said 95% of these users were blocked for violating the limits of the number of times messages can be forwarded in India.
The submissions were made by WhatsApp in its first monthly compliance report under India's controversial new IT rules.
India is WhatsApp's largest market with about 400 million users.
The Facebook-owned messaging service said its "top focus" has been to prevent accounts in India from sending harmful or unwanted messages at scale.
Using advanced machine learning technology, WhatsApp reportedly bans close to eight million accounts across the world every month.
Two million accounts in India sending a "high and abnormal rate of messages" were banned in India alone between 15 May and 15 June, the service said.
The service identifies an Indian account as one with a +91 (country code) phone number.
The Facebook-owned app often ends up being the focus of discussions on the spread of misinformation and fake news in India.
Such fake news and hoaxes are forwarded to tens of thousands of users in hours, and it's practically impossible to counter them.
Messages and videos circulating in bulk have in the past incited mob violence in India, even leading to deaths.
In addition to responding to user complaints, WhatsApp said it deployed its own tools to prevent abuse on the platform.
It said it relied on the "behavioural signals" from user accounts, or on available "unencrypted information", profile and group photos, and descriptions to identify potential offenders.
WhatsApp's submissions come at a time when tech companies are embroiled in an intensifying battle with the Indian government over the new IT rules.
The guidelines - announced in February and became effective in May - seek to regulate content on social media and streaming platforms, and have raised serious concerns about free speech and user privacy.
Critics say they give the government and law enforcement agencies powers to take down a wide range of content on the internet. But the government claims the rules are meant to prevent abuse and misinformation.

Orthodox Jews in United Kingdom offer 'kosher' certified cell phones

The British Rabbinate is now offering kosher certification to cell phones it supports for members of the Ultra-Orthodox community.
Friday afternoon can be a stressful time in Stamford Hill, a working class neighborhood in northern London.
The ultra orthodox Jews, are in a rush to buy challah, rugalach and other Jewish baked goods so they can take it easy after sunset, when the Sabbath starts. Resting on the Sabbath is part of an effort to live as closely as possible to Jewish law.
But despite the community’s traditional ways, the members aren't opposed to new things.
“Anything that can be used to enhance Judaism is welcomed,” said Rabbi Chanoch Kesselman. “But like so many things there are uses and abuses."
Rabbi Chanoch Kesselman represents the British rabbinate, the main Jewish authority in Britain. Kesselman said the Internet, for example, offers access to valuable religious texts and discussions. But the rabbi said it can also lead to immodesty. He said in the same way, cell phones can help people do business or help parents keep track of their children. But they also can lead children astray.
“The rabbinate was very concerned that cell phones with texting facility should not be used by youngsters,” said Kesselman.
Texting is not only a waste of time, the authorities decided, but it also encourages “immodest” exchanges that would not happen on the telephone or face-to-face. So the rabbinate decided to grant certain cell phones official approval, calling them kosher — a system that has been most well-known for its use in food. The kosher phones are stripped down devices that can only receive and make calls. It helps the community feel more comfortable about choosing a phone, he said, much like shopping for kosher food.
“Using a phone with a similar seal on is similar to buying any article that is certified as kosher,” Kesselman said.
The pace of passersby becomes more hectic as the Sabbath approaches. Menachem Weinstein is smoking a cigarette outside a synagogue. Before rushing off, he said not all Ultra-Orthodox agree on the need for kosher cell phones.
“I think in this day and age they should be more focusing on, not disallowing stuff, but finding out why the teenagers, because that’s why they made the kosher phone, why the teenagers are abusing it,” Weinstein said
Shortly afterwards speakers blasted out music, telling the neighborhood that the Sabbath was about to start.
At Rose Communications, the company which sells the phones, Maxi Rose said there are only about 20,000 to 30,000 Ultra-Orthodox families in the U.K., not enough to make it practical for a cellular network to offer Kosher phone service.
“So no network would come really and make those changes,” Rose said. “So the changes had to made from the hardware and software in the device, rather than from network level. So the devices are modified. No cameras allowed, no SMS allowed, no Internet allowed.”
Rose says the phones have been a big hit. Not just to protect children, but among adults who prefer the simplicity. He said there’s also been a kind of crossover appeal. Most of his online sales are to non-Jewish customers around the world, in places like Saudi Arabia.
Kesselmen said British Muslims tell him they too are concerned about the decline in moral standards among Muslim youth. Just as halal or Islamic dietary laws are very similar to kosher, the rabbi said Muslims and other non-Jews have no problem following the lead of “kosher” phones.

Yesterday a brother rebooted his cracked screen android phone. But when rebooting, he had to enter his pattern to unlock the phone once before the fingerprint sensor is allowed to work.
Since his phone is cracked, he was unable to draw his pattern as one side of the phone's screen doesn't work. Fortunately he is tech savy and knew how to overcome this issue.
He called me up and asked if I had the OTG cables, fortunately I did :) I use them to transfer files to and from memory sticks. Great for tablets and mobiles.
Anyways, he came and collected the cable from me and managed to connect a MOUSE, that's right, a USB Mouse. He was able to unlock his phone with the use of a mouse and the OTG cable.
He was back up and running on his cracked screen.
I asked if he needed a temp phone to borrow. He declined, he said he kept his HTC One M8 and will just use that until he upgraded or fixed his screen.
I was going to offer him some of my older android phones or a couple iPhones that are lying around. But knowing him he would rather use a broken phone than an iPhone :) He won't even take an iPhone for free (to use for himself)
Can anyone help. My wife dropped her s10 plus about a month ago and it got a small crack in the corner of screen but now screen doesn't respond when touching it. Any ideas how this can be fixed or does it require a new screen. Its annoying as many phones including mine has much more bigger cracks on screen and in middle of screen yet works fine but hers got one tiny one in corner which u can barely notice
You'll need a new screen. Take it to the market and get if fixed for about £50 or take it to Samsung to get a warranteed job.
Shop around in the market and get yourself some prices first. Most of them will charge you up front and take the phone away for a day or more. So, being an Android, they will be able to access anything on the device. Alternatively, she/you can transfer everything to another phone via backup/transfer (make use of the OTG Cable if needed and use a mouse)
I got my daughters phone fixed after the manufacturer and a private engineer said it was BER (Beyond Economical Repair). One of the shops in the market replaced to the charging IC and got it working again. The brother I've mentioned in the above post was also quoted £50 to have his screen replaced, but his phone is not even worth that much, so he opted out.
This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
