10 ways to extend your smartphone's battery life

It really doesn't matter what kind of smartphone you rely on for work or play - be it an iPhone, Android device, Windows Phone or BlackBerry - the more these pocket-sized computers can do, the more pressure it can put on the battery.

If you're finding your smartphone is petering out before you're ready to, consider these tips to squeeze more battery life between charges.

1. DIM THE SCREEN

Turning down the brightness of your smartphone screen will help preserve battery life. Look in the Options or Settings menu. You'll get used to the dimmer screen after a short while. On a related note, also set your screen to turn off after a minute or so of inactivity.

2. TURN OFF RADIOS YOU DON'T USE

Unless you need them, turn off as many of your phone's wireless radios as you can. That includes GPS, Bluetooth, NFC and Wi-Fi. Or, in a pinch, turn off all radios, including cellular connectivity, by selecting the "airplane mode." (Tip: Your phone will charge up much faster when in airplane mode, too.)

3. TURN OFF PUSH NOTIFICATIONS

If you can, turn off "push" services or reduce the frequency in which you ask your smartphone to receive new information, such as incoming e-mail messages. The phone needs to "ping" a server to send you the updated data each time. Instead, choose to pull down messages when you need to. Android users can see an organized breakdown of what's consuming your phone's battery in the Settings area.

4. USE WI-FI OVER CELLULAR

If you'd like to access online content, use Wi-Fi instead of cellular connectivity when possible. This will require you to join a wireless network at home or the office, or when you're in a public hot spot, such as a caf, hotel lobby or airport lounge. Wi-Fi has been proven to be less taxing on your battery than using cellular (3G/4G) service.

5. REMEMBER TO LOCK IT

Always lock your smartphone when you aren't using it. You'll still be able to receive calls and texts, but you aren't accidentally turning on the phone when it's in your pocket or purse (because you hit a button or the screen). After all, there's nothing more embarrassing than calling someone by accident - especially when it's 2 a.m.

6. APPS MATTER

The battery will drain faster if you're using the phone for tasks that are more demanding on the system's resources, such as watching video or playing multiplayer games, than less taxing tasks, such as typing notes or reading an electronic book. Multitasking - listening to music while surfing the Web, for example - can also contribute to faster battery drain. On a related note, some apps drain your battery more than others (such as ones with many online advertisements). "Live" widgets and wallpaper will drain the battery, too.

7. MAKE SURE THE APP IS CLOSED

Be sure to properly close an app when you're not using it, as it still might be running in the background and, thus, using up power (and possibly data). With iPhones, for example, double-tap the Home button and swipe up to close open apps. Similarly, press and hold the home button on an Android device and swipe to the right to close open apps.

8. ROOM TEMP IS BEST

If you can help it, don't keep your phone in hot or cold temperatures, like leaving it on your car's dashboard on a sweltering summer day or frigid winter night. Both scenarios could prematurely drain your battery. Ideally, smartphones work best from, say, 32 degrees to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

9. SOFTWARE UPDATES

Be sure you download the latest software updates (sometimes referred to as "firmware") as smartphone engineers are always trying out new ways to improve power management. This can be performed when the smartphone is attached to a computer via USB cable or over a Wi-Fi connection.

10. EXTRA BATTERY

Many phones have fitted battery packs to extend battery life - doubling it, in most cases - and they often serve as added protection if banged around. Or you can carry around portable lithium-ion battery boosts that plug into your smartphone via USB cable, if needed (the higher the mAh number, the more times it can charge up your device).

WEAPONIZED IPHONE WORKS LIKE A TASER

Don't iPhone me, bro.

In Australia, customs agents seized 6,000 weapons that arrived from China, including fake iPhones designed to deliver electric shocks. In a press release published by the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, photos show contraband, including brass knuckles, extendable batons and other shock devices.

On the taser-like phones, the shocking mechanism can be seen on the top of the phone opposite the headphone jack. A spokesperson did not confirm whether police tested the phones, but an instruction sheet packaged with the devices described them as "iPhone 4 super ultra electronic thin riot."

Police were tipped off about the shipment by a citizen, and a 43-year-old man from Thomastown, Victoria, near Melbourne, was arrested. He could face 10 years in prison and a fine of nearly $400,000.

A few months I bought a htc one, which I gifted to my wife, she hates it.

- Phone hangs for no reason
- calls will drop during mid conversation
- nasheeds on her phone will randomly start playing
- when on phone you can't do nothing else
- now phone has started to make random calls by itself too lol, good thing the phone is on private number
- tried attaching it to its backup but no luck, the phone don't even allow you to do nothing , had to copy pics manually
- disappointed with phone severely and so is she, we don't care what it can do and how fast it is and how good the camera is when it's simple functionality is rubbish. Will not be buying a htc again severely unlikely.
- Verdict : HTC = garbage ( not impressed at all, was initially but not anymore )

That's a bad review, do feel for your terrible experience with the phone, ive got the HTC one x, much older version of the HTC one, never really had any issues. I know br.abu Mohammed uses the HTC one. Maybe he can shed some light on the issues.

Mind you after reading your post, don't think you'd be interested. Nevertheless, it does sound like a faulty handset.

That's really unfortunate.

Many times certain glitches can take place after installing certain apps. Anyways, Alhumdulillah, never had an issue with the HTC One myself and I use it very heavily.

Don't forget, you have 2 years warranty from HTC, get online, they will arrange collection and repair for free and if the problems continue, they will replace it.

HTC One (M8) Prime purported specifications include QHD display

The first rumor of the upcoming HTC One (M8) Prime has hit the web. The Prime, which is believed to be the codename for the One (M8) Max (or One Max 2, if you like), is rumored to pack the company's first QHD display.

More specifically, the screen size is going to be 5.5" and the QHD resolution means the pixel density will be the cool 534 ppi. Under the hood of the phone is reportedly going to be a beastly Snapdragon 805 APQ8084 SoC with a quad-core Krait CPU, 3GB of RAM and 16GB of storage.

According to the specs source, who is claimed to be reliable in the past by the Japanese blog that cites it, the One (M8) Prime would feature Qualcomm's latest MDM9x35 multimode modem. In addition to its 300Mbps downlink, it is capable of superior carrier aggregation - 40 MHz for FDD Category 6 and LTE TDD.

Additionally, the rumor suggests that HTC would continue to use its dual-camera setup found on the One (M8) in the Prime, too. The main snapper will be allegedly have an 18MP sensor and there will be an 5MP camera on top of it for depth and better out-of-focus shots.

The phone is speculated to become official in September. Currently, the specifications are based on a prototype unit that HTC is testing out. We're yet to see what the Prime would actually look like.

Google Maps receives major update on iPhone and Android

Google Maps has largely taken both the Android and iPhone GPS market over. Now, thanks to a new update, the app will, almost assuredly, increase its reach.

The new update features lane guidance, Uber integration and better offline maps as part of the experience. Google detailed the update as a whole, and made sure to pack it full of new features.

With lane guidance, users can now expected to be directed by Google Maps as to which lane they will need to stay in. The guidance will be focused around voice commands instructing drivers which lane is most beneficial for their next move. The lane guidance will be usable by drivers in the US, Canada, and Japan.

The offline use of Google Maps has also been revamped. Now, more than ever before, the ease of saving maps for use offline will be heightened. The Uber integration will play off users who have already downloaded the Uber app and will help in comparing transit options.

New filters for restaurants and businesses have also been added to Google Maps; allowing users to search for the specifics they are looking for. On the transit side, users have long been able to use "arrive by" or "depart at" options, now Google Maps will also integrate train schedules.

The Google Maps app update is available on both the iTunes App Store and Google Play now.

Buy a Nokia if it will stop working, it may be used as paper weight, hammer, self defence. Etc. Joke aside, they are now making some good and cheap Windows phone 📱. If you like.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 with six-inch HD display, is quite an impressive phone, last I saw it, it was reduced by 100. It is a phablet, but screen size seemed great to work on.

I kind of felt bad when I went away and realised that many of us do live very different lifestyles and therefore decided not to praise (hype up) expensive gadgets.

We all have our own budgets and we should feel content with what we have and never feel bad that there is someone who has something better.

We should be thankful to Allah for whatever we have, cheap or expensive.

Having said that, here is something that gives a small insight into what the ratings are suggesting....
